Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Boot an HP laptop from USB
- Prepare the USB drive. It must contain bootable installation, recovery, or diagnostic media; a blank drive will not start a boot program. For the Windows 11 Secure Boot troubleshooting flow it documents, HP specifies a GPT-formatted bootable USB. HP’s Secure Boot instructions describe that case.
- Shut down the laptop and connect the USB drive.
- Open the Startup Menu. Turn on the laptop and immediately tap Esc repeatedly until the menu appears. HP also documents pressing F9 repeatedly immediately after power-on on some systems to open the boot menu directly.
- Choose the USB device. From Startup Menu, press F9 to open Boot Device Options, also called Boot Manager or Boot Menu on some systems. Select the USB entry and press Enter.
- Continue in the USB program. Follow the installer, diagnostic, or recovery program’s on-screen instructions. For HP Cloud Recovery, select the target USB containing the recovery image and follow the prompts in the recovery tool. See HP’s Cloud Recovery instructions.
If the USB drive does not appear or boot
Check that the USB is actually bootable
Confirm that the intended installer, recovery image, or diagnostic program was correctly written to the drive. The format and firmware mode must be compatible with the laptop. HP’s GPT guidance applies to the Windows 11 Secure Boot troubleshooting case, not necessarily every bootable USB task.

Retry the key sequence immediately
Timing matters: begin tapping Esc or F9 as soon as you press the power button. If one route does not open the menu, try the other. The Startup Menu and boot-menu entry points differ across HP models.

HP warns that BIOS menus and available functions vary by computer. Use the support instructions for your exact laptop model when labels or options do not match. Secure Boot may prevent media it does not recognize from starting. HP says newer models released after 2020 no longer support Legacy mode, and Windows 11 does not support Legacy BIOS mode. Disabling Secure Boot or switching to Legacy is therefore not a universal fix; whether either change is appropriate depends on the laptop and the media.

Keep BitLocker recovery in mind
HP warns that changing boot order may prompt for a BitLocker recovery key. If firmware changes become necessary, locate the key before proceeding.
Which startup option should you choose?
Choose the USB entry that matches the task you prepared the drive for: installation, recovery, or diagnostics. If multiple USB-related entries appear, consult the laptop’s model-specific instructions and the media creator’s guidance rather than changing firmware settings at random. For an HP recovery drive, use the recovery image on the USB and follow HP’s on-screen prompts.
