To make a laptop last longer on its current charge, do three things: dim the display, switch on the built-in battery-saving mode, and cut avoidable background activity. All three use built-in Windows or macOS controls, and none needs extra software. The savings vary by laptop and by what you’re doing, so don’t expect a fixed number of extra hours.
Step 1: Dim the display
The screen is a setting you control directly, and Apple’s MacBook guidance recommends dimming it. Set brightness to the lowest level you can read comfortably.

- Windows: lower brightness from Quick Settings or Settings > System > Display. In the same area, you can choose a lower refresh rate. Microsoft says higher refresh rates use more power, so this helps if you don’t need smooth motion. The trade-off is less fluid scrolling and animation.
- Mac: use the brightness keys or the Control Centre display slider.
Also make the screen turn off sooner when you’re idle. On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts and shorten the “on battery” values. Earlier Windows versions word these menus differently. On a Mac, the equivalent display and sleep timers are in System Settings.
Step 2: Turn on battery-saving mode
Microsoft Support says, “Using battery saver is the easiest way to extend battery life.”

Windows
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, choose Best Power Efficiency if it appears. Microsoft notes this option isn’t on every PC, because it depends on hardware and manufacturer.
- Turn on Energy saver when runtime matters more than background syncing and activity.
Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery.
- Turn on Low Power Mode, or pick a lower energy mode if your Mac offers one.
The trade-off is that these modes can limit background processes or performance. Options differ by model and software version.
Step 3: Reduce avoidable activity
- Find the heavy users. On Windows 11, use Battery usage per app and Energy recommendations in Power & battery. Limit background activity for apps that drain power; some apps don’t offer this control.
- Quit what you aren’t using. On a Mac, close apps you’ve finished with rather than leaving them open.
- Switch off unused connections. Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you don’t need them, and unplug peripherals you aren’t using. These draw power, though how much depends on the device. The cost is losing that functionality until you turn them back on.
How much will this add?
No current cross-model test quantifies the combined gain from these three steps, so any promised hours or percentage would be a guess. Microsoft does report a narrow, older comparison: on Windows 10, its tests found Edge browsing battery life was 36–53% longer per charge than Chrome, Firefox or Opera. That applies to that browser comparison only, not to current Windows versions, other tasks, or every laptop.

Runtime now versus battery lifespan
“Battery life” can mean how long one charge lasts, or how the battery’s capacity ages over years. The three steps above address the first. For the second, Mac users can check condition and maximum capacity in Battery settings. Supported Macs also offer charging controls such as Charge Limit or Optimized Battery Charging. Heat also matters, so avoid leaving a laptop somewhere hot. If a battery report shows heavy wear, manufacturer service is the fix, not settings.
