To blur your background on a video call, open your meeting app’s video or background-effects settings, choose Blur, and preview the result before joining or while on the call. Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams all offer built-in blur controls, though the exact menu and availability depend on your device, account, app configuration, and administrator settings.
Blur can make a room less distracting, but it is not a privacy guarantee: check the preview and move sensitive items out of camera view.

Google Meet: blur before or during a call
Before joining
- Open the meeting and look at your self-view.
- Select the Blur control at the bottom right of the self-view.
- Check the preview, then join when you are ready.
During a meeting
- Open Video settings.
- Choose Blur background.
- Check the result in your self-view.
Meet also offers slight blur, custom backgrounds, AI-generated backgrounds, and other effects. Which effects appear can depend on the client, account type, and administrator settings. Google says device and cloud processing may be selected automatically; effects can use more battery or slow a device. If video becomes sluggish or battery is low, turn effects off. Google Meet: change backgrounds and effects.
Zoom: use Blur on desktop or mobile
Zoom desktop app
- Before a meeting: open Settings > Video & effects > Backgrounds > Blur.
- During a meeting: select the arrow next to Video, then enable Blur my background.
Zoom on Android or iOS
- While in a meeting, open More > Settings > Virtual background.
- Select Blur.
The blur choice can remain the default for later meetings. Zoom’s desktop blur relies on the system requirements for its virtual-background feature when used without a green screen; mobile devices also have virtual-background requirements. An administrator can enable or disable virtual backgrounds and AI-generated backgrounds. When available and permitted, Zoom can generate a background image from a prompt; that is a replacement background, not simply blur. Background effects may be unavailable on some devices. Microsoft’s current instructions say Linux users and users on optimized VDI cannot use them; Android support depends on app, operating-system, and GPU requirements. Teams also has an AI-generated Decorate effect, which changes the background rather than merely softening it. Microsoft describes the background effect process as using AI and the camera to isolate a person’s silhouette and transform the setting. When blur is missing or does not work
- The control is not shown: check whether your device and app support effects, and whether your account or organization allows them. Administrator policies, app version, and virtual desktop configuration can affect availability.
- You are using a managed work or school account: ask the administrator whether background effects or virtual backgrounds are disabled.
- The image looks wrong: check the preview, improve the light on your face, and keep your outline distinct from the background. These steps may help the camera separate you from the room, but the result varies by device and conditions.
- The call becomes slow or the battery drains: turn off effects, especially on a device already under load. Google notes that effects can affect performance and battery use.
- You need stronger privacy: do not rely on blur to hide confidential material. Microsoft warns sensitive information can remain visible after blurring or replacing a background; move it out of frame or use a camera position that excludes it.
Does AI background blur require a green screen?
The built-in workflows described by Google Meet, Zoom, and Teams do not establish a green screen as necessary. Zoom’s desktop documentation specifically describes virtual-background system requirements for use without a green screen. Requirements differ by platform and device, so if blur is unavailable, check that platform’s current support page rather than assuming a physical backdrop will fix it.
