For a screenshot you plan to share, the quickest dependable approach is to cover the private area with a fully opaque shape, export a separate copy, and inspect that exported file. Blur and pixelation can make an email address, account number, name, or other text hard to read, but they are visual effects—not proven, irreversible security redaction. If the information is in a PDF and must be removed from the document, use the PDF application’s redaction command and apply it; simply marking or painting over an area is not the same operation.
Choose the right way to hide information
Decide what “hide” means before editing:

For small text, an opaque cover is usually easier to verify than a subtle blur. Use blur or pixelation when appearance matters, then zoom in on the saved copy and check that no characters remain readable around the edges.
Blur or cover a screenshot on iPhone and iPad with Markup
Apple’s Markup tools can draw, add text, and place shapes on screenshots and photos. The following path matches Apple’s Markup support workflow reviewed on April 8, 2026; labels can move in later iOS or iPadOS releases. See Apple’s Markup instructions if your interface differs.
- Open Photos and select the screenshot.
- Tap Edit, then tap Markup.
- Tap the add button to insert a shape. A rectangle is usually easiest for an email address, order number, or account field.
- Resize and position the shape so it extends slightly beyond every character. Choose a solid fill or use a drawing tool with sufficient thickness.
- Check opacity. A translucent fill can leave text visible; set the cover fully opaque. Markup’s drawing controls include opacity and thickness adjustments.
- Tap Done, then Done again to save the edited photo.
- Open the saved result at full size. Confirm that the private region is covered and that you did not hide necessary context elsewhere.
Keep the original screenshot separate. If you need to make another change, edit a duplicate rather than repeatedly overwriting the only copy.

Hide text in Windows
A practical Windows workflow is to capture with Snipping Tool, paste into Paint, and cover the identifying region with a solid brush or rectangle. A helpdesk guide also demonstrates a solid-fill rectangle in Snagit (guide). That guide is not current Microsoft documentation, so confirm the menu names in your installed Windows 10 or Windows 11 version; do not assume Snipping Tool has a dedicated redaction command.
- Press Win+Shift+S and drag around the content you need, or open an existing image.
- Paste the capture into Paint (or open the image file directly).
- Choose a rectangle or brush with a solid color. Black is common, but any opaque color works.
- Draw beyond the first and last character of the sensitive value. For irregular areas, use several overlapping strokes rather than leaving corners exposed.
- Save as a new PNG or JPEG filename, such as
receipt-redacted.png. - Close and reopen that saved file. Zoom in and check the actual exported pixels, not only the editor’s preview.
If you need a reversible edit before export, work on a duplicate or use an editor that keeps layers. Once a flattened image is shared, assume the covered pixels cannot be restored by the recipient—but do not treat that as a guarantee about copies you retain or metadata you may disclose.
Apply selective blur or pixelation in Photoshop
Photoshop is useful when you need precise selections, masks, or a consistent visual style. Adobe documents both selective blur and pixelation in its pixelate image tutorial.

Selective blur
- Open the image and duplicate the background layer so the original remains available.
- Select the private region with the Marquee or Lasso tool. Feather the selection slightly if a hard edge would look distracting.
- Choose Filter > Blur, select a blur type, adjust its controls, and apply it to the selected area.
- Inspect at 100% and at the size your recipient will see. Increase the selected area if characters remain visible at the boundary.
- Export a flattened copy with File > Export and review that exported file.
Pixelation with a mask or smart filter
- Make a selection around the face, address, logo, or text.
- Use a pixelation filter or a Smart Filter with a layer mask so the effect is confined to that selection.
- Adjust block size until the underlying detail is no longer legible in the exported image.
- Save the editable project separately, then export the image you intend to send.
Pixelation can be more obvious than blur and may preserve the overall composition better. Neither method should be described as guaranteed secure removal; the reviewed Adobe material explains the editing workflow, not a recovery-resistance test.
When a screenshot is actually a PDF
A screenshot pasted into a PDF is still an image. Painting a white rectangle over it changes what is visible, but it does not perform document redaction. If the PDF contains selectable text, vector objects, or embedded images that must be removed, use the application’s redaction feature and finalize it.
An Adobe Acrobat X white paper in a Scottish Government FOI release states: “Marking an item for redaction only flags the item for redaction. To finalize the redaction, you must apply it.” It also explains that an applied area redaction of a graphic or image removes everything inside the selected area, including text, images, and vector objects. The document describes an older Acrobat X workflow, so current Acrobat menus may differ. After applying redactions, save a new file, close it, reopen it, and test search, copy, and selection around the redacted area.

Verify the copy before you share it
- Reopen the exported file: Do not rely on an unsaved editor view.
- Zoom to 200–400%: Look for readable characters at edges, corners, and beneath translucent marks.
- Check alternate views: Inspect on a light and dark background if the cover color could blend in.
- Search PDFs: Try selecting and copying text near the redaction; applied document redaction should remove the selected content.
- Check the frame: Make sure notifications, browser tabs, filenames, and neighboring fields do not reveal a second copy of the same information.
- Share only the edited copy: Keep the original in a private location and use a distinct filename.
Common problems and fixes
The text is still readable through the mark
The fill is probably translucent, too narrow, or applied on a layer beneath the text. Use a fully opaque shape, extend it past the complete value, flatten or export, and inspect the reopened file.
A blur looks safe in the editor but not after sending
Resizing or compression can change the appearance. Review the exact PNG, JPEG, or PDF attachment that will be transmitted, at the recipient’s likely display size and at high zoom.

Only part of an irregular area is covered
Use a lasso selection, several overlapping opaque shapes, or a larger rectangular cover. Pay particular attention to rounded corners, descenders, and anti-aliased edges.

The PDF still lets me find the supposedly hidden word
You drew over the page or only marked a redaction. Use the PDF application’s actual redaction command, apply/finalize it, save a new file, and test search and copy again.
I overwrote the original
Stop sharing the file and check backups or cloud version history. For future edits, duplicate first and export to a new filename.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I undo a blur after saving?
Only if you retain the editable project or an unmodified original. A flattened exported image does not preserve an edit history for you to revise.
Should I use black or white to cover text?
Either is acceptable if the cover is fully opaque and does not obscure context you need to show. Match the surrounding design only when that will not make the mask easy to miss.
