For a fast mobile preview, open Chrome DevTools and turn on Device Mode, or use Safari’s Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode on macOS. These tools reveal width, breakpoint and orientation problems immediately. They are desktop approximations, not mobile hardware, so verify important behavior on an actual Android phone or iPhone with remote inspection.

Choose the right preview method

Start with desktop emulation for speed, then move to a real device when the result could depend on a mobile browser, touch input, hardware, or operating-system behavior.

Method Best for Runtime fidelity Setup
Chrome DevTools Device Mode Responsive layouts, breakpoints, viewport sizing, orientation, CPU and network throttling, and geolocation simulation Desktop approximation; the page does not execute on a phone Chrome on a desktop
Safari Responsive Design Mode Media queries and responsive layouts as rendered by Safari on macOS Desktop preview, not iOS hardware Safari on a Mac
Chrome remote debugging for Android Inspecting a page in Chrome on a physical Android device and reaching a local development site Actual Android browser and hardware Development computer, Android device and connection setup
Safari Web Inspector for iPhone or iPad Inspecting a real Safari tab, or using an Apple simulator Actual iOS/iPadOS Safari when using hardware Mac, Web Inspector enabled, and device connection

Chrome describes Device Mode as a first-order approximation: it is excellent for layout checks, but it does not run your page on a mobile device and cannot reproduce every hardware characteristic. See the Chrome Device Mode documentation before treating an emulated result as proof.

Preview a website with Chrome DevTools

  1. Open the page you want to check in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools. You can use the browser menu or the keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
  3. Toggle the device toolbar. The page appears inside a mobile-sized viewport.
  4. Leave Dimensions set to Responsive when you want to drag the viewport width, or select a listed device preset for a repeatable size.
  5. Resize through every breakpoint that matters to your design. Check the navigation, typography, cards, tables, forms, images and fixed elements at both narrow and wide widths.
  6. Rotate the emulated device to test portrait and landscape layouts. Use Device Mode’s CPU or network throttling when a slow connection or processor could expose a loading problem; use its geolocation controls when location changes the page.
  7. Interact with the page rather than only looking at it. Open menus, focus fields, scroll long sections, submit validation errors and test touch-oriented controls.

Device Mode is the quickest first pass because it lets you change viewport dimensions without repeatedly reconnecting a phone. It still cannot prove that scrolling, text rendering, sensors, browser chrome, keyboard behavior or performance will match a real handset.

Preview a website in Safari on a Mac

  1. Open the page in macOS Safari and make sure the page is the active tab.
  2. Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. Apple lists Control-Command-R as the shortcut.
  3. Select a viewport preset or resize the preview to the widths you support.
  4. Exercise the same interactions you checked in Chrome, paying attention to Safari-specific layout and form behavior.
  5. Open Web Inspector alongside the responsive view when you need to inspect styles, layout or console errors.

Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation covers the desktop workflow. This mode tells you how Safari lays out a page at selected dimensions; it does not substitute for an iPhone or iPad when the issue may be tied to iOS hardware or the mobile Safari runtime.

Check a local development site on Android

A page served only from your development computer is not automatically available in Chrome on an Android phone. Chrome documents two supported approaches: port forwarding and virtual host mapping. Both let the phone reach a local development site while you inspect the real tab from desktop DevTools.

  1. Prepare the development computer and Android device for Chrome’s remote-debugging workflow described in the Chrome Android remote debugging guide.
  2. Connect the phone and open the development page in Chrome on Android.
  3. In the remote-debugging interface, choose the phone’s open tab so desktop DevTools attaches to the actual page.
  4. For a site bound to your development machine, configure the documented port-forwarding or virtual-host-mapping route that matches your local server.
  5. Reload the phone tab and test the page while watching the live DOM, styles, console and network activity from the computer.

Use this route when a responsive preview shows a layout issue but you need to know whether it also occurs in Android Chrome. It gives you an actual browser session instead of a desktop simulation.

Inspect an iPhone or iPad with Safari Web Inspector

  1. On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Safari > Advanced and enable Web Inspector.
  2. Connect the device to a Mac and open the page in Safari on the device.
  3. On the Mac, open Safari’s Develop menu and select the connected device and its open page.
  4. Use the inspector to examine the live page, styles, console and other debugging information.
  5. If you prefer not to use physical hardware, Apple also documents simulator use for testing without a device.

Apple’s Inspecting iOS and iPadOS documentation describes device and simulator inspection. Wireless inspection requires an additional Xcode configuration after the device has first been connected by cable; the setup is documented by Apple and WebKit. See WebKit’s Web Inspector instructions for the device-side setting and connection details.

What a desktop mobile preview can and cannot tell you

Reliable for layout questions

  • Whether content overflows a narrow viewport.
  • Whether media queries switch at the intended breakpoints.
  • Whether navigation, grids and typography rearrange as expected.
  • Whether an image, video or embedded element exceeds its container.
  • Whether a portrait or landscape composition leaves unusable gaps.

Not conclusive for device-specific behavior

  • Actual touch targets, gesture handling and virtual-keyboard effects.
  • Mobile browser UI, safe-area insets and address-bar resizing.
  • GPU, memory, battery and thermal behavior.
  • Font rasterization, sensor access and other hardware-dependent APIs.
  • Differences between desktop Safari or Chrome and the corresponding mobile browser.

When a defect affects checkout, authentication, media playback, location, camera access, scrolling or another high-value interaction, reproduce it on the target mobile browser before shipping a fix. Keep the emulated check as a fast regression pass, not as the only sign-off.

A practical mobile-preview workflow

  1. Begin with a responsive sweep. In Chrome Device Mode, check the smallest supported width, each breakpoint, and a wide phone-sized width. Repeat the key widths in Safari Responsive Design Mode if Safari matters to your audience.
  2. Test state, not just appearance. Open menus, fill and clear forms, trigger validation, scroll nested regions, rotate the viewport and return to the page after navigation.
  3. Check constrained conditions. Use Chrome’s throttling controls to expose late-loading assets and layout shifts. If location changes content, use the geolocation simulation for a first check.
  4. Move important findings to hardware. Attach Android Chrome through remote debugging or iOS Safari through Web Inspector. Confirm that the same interaction fails or succeeds on the real runtime.
  5. Record reproducible details. Note browser, operating system, orientation, viewport or device, URL, account state and the exact action that produced the problem. This prevents an emulation-only observation from being mistaken for a device defect.

Troubleshooting common preview problems

The device toolbar or responsive view is missing

Open the browser’s developer tools first, then toggle the device toolbar in Chrome. In Safari, the responsive view is under Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode; focus the page before opening that command.

The page looks correct in emulation but fails on a phone

That is an expected boundary of emulation. Device Mode does not execute the page on mobile hardware. Attach the affected Android or iOS browser and inspect the actual tab, then isolate whether the failure comes from browser behavior, touch input, performance, a permission, or hardware.

The Android phone cannot open the local site

Use Chrome’s documented port-forwarding or virtual-host-mapping workflow rather than assuming a computer-only localhost address will work on the phone. Confirm that the phone tab is open before attaching remote DevTools.

The iPhone does not appear in Safari’s Develop menu

Verify that Settings > Safari > Advanced > Web Inspector is enabled, that the device is connected to the Mac, and that Safari is open on the page you intend to inspect. Wireless sessions also need the Xcode setup described in Apple’s instructions; reconnect by cable when configuring that path.

A responsive preview is the wrong size

In Chrome, switch between Responsive and a named device preset, then drag the viewport through the breakpoint range. In Safari, choose a different preset or resize the responsive window. Test both orientations instead of relying on one width.

A screenshot contains a consent banner or other overlay

A browser preview shows what that browser session receives, including overlays. If you need repeatable clean captures for documentation, visual regression or sharing, use an automated screenshot service that can handle those elements before capture.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is the #1 screenshot API option here because it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots. It can request 12 device presets or any viewport, so you can generate consistent mobile-sized images without opening DevTools.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API can capture a full page with lazy images loaded, a single CSS-selected element, dark mode, retina output, a chosen viewport, or a PDF with paper size, margins, orientation and page ranges. You can add custom CSS and JavaScript, click an element before capture, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, hide selectors, block ads, trackers, requests or resource types, and provide headers, cookies, a user agent, Authorization, timezone or geolocation. Image resizing, transparent backgrounds, cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification are also available. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs work as well, which helps when migrating.

Can I inspect an Android page without taking screenshots?

Yes. Chrome remote debugging attaches desktop DevTools to the live Chrome tab on the Android device, including a locally developed page configured with port forwarding or virtual host mapping.

Are automated screenshots a substitute for accessibility and interaction testing?

No. A screenshot verifies visual output at a selected state and viewport. Keyboard access, screen readers, touch gestures, permissions and runtime performance still require interactive testing.
