The shortest path to ad-free YouTube in Brave
- Open the latest available version of Brave.
- Go to
youtube.comand start a video. - Click the Shields lion icon in the address bar and confirm that Shields is on for YouTube.
- Leave the normal ad and tracker blocking setting enabled. Do not turn Shields off just because an ad appears once; filters and YouTube behavior can change while a fix is being deployed.
- If the video does not start, update Brave, restart it, and test again before changing site permissions.
This approach uses Brave’s built-in protection instead of adding another blocker. Brave describes ad blocking as an out-of-the-box Shields feature, but that is a vendor statement rather than a guarantee that every YouTube session will remain ad-free or play without interruption.

Shields is Brave’s built-in privacy and content-filtering layer. Brave says it blocks ads and trackers by default and specifically lists YouTube ad blocking among the browser’s ready-to-use features. On a YouTube page, Shields can prevent advertising requests and other tracking elements before they are rendered. YouTube’s player and page scripts can change independently, however. When YouTube changes how it requests, verifies, or displays ads, a previously working filter may need an update. Brave’s own March 2026 update acknowledges this continuing contest: YouTube temporarily circumvented Shields, and Brave then released fixes intended to restore blocking for pre-roll, mid-roll, on-page ads and other annoyances.
That history explains two apparently conflicting experiences. Shields can be enabled and still allow an ad during a short period when YouTube’s systems have changed. Conversely, a fix can restore blocking without you changing a setting. Treat the browser version and the current state of YouTube as part of the setup.
Check your Brave version before changing Shields
Brave’s cited update associates the described YouTube improvements with version 1.87 and above. The exact version available to you depends on your operating system and the browser’s release channel, so use Brave’s built-in update screen rather than assuming that an old installation contains the latest filters.

- Choose About Brave. The browser checks for an update and displays the installed version.
- If an update is downloaded, use the relaunch control shown by Brave.
- Return to YouTube after the browser has restarted and test a normal video.
Do this check separately on each device. Updating a desktop installation does not update Brave on Android, and a feature described in a desktop release note should not automatically be treated as available on every platform.
Write down the full version number when diagnosing a problem. Saying that you use “Brave” is not enough to distinguish an older build from one containing the fixes associated with 1.87 or later. Also note whether the browser came from a stable or other release channel, since the available update can differ by channel.
Desktop instructions: keep blocking on while preserving playback
1. Open YouTube in a normal Brave tab
Use a regular tab first, not a private window or an embedded player inside another site. A normal tab makes it easier to see the Shields status for the exact YouTube page and to reproduce a playback problem.
2. Confirm Shields is enabled for the site
Select the lion icon at the right side of the address bar. The panel should show that Shields is up for the current YouTube domain. If it has been disabled for YouTube, turn it back on and reload the page.

Do not switch protection off merely to avoid a single warning. The default configuration is the setting Brave describes as blocking ads and trackers out of the box. If you have previously created a site-specific exception, remove that exception or restore the site’s standard Shields behavior, then reload.

4. Test more than one video
Play a second video after the page reloads. One failed video can reflect a temporary page or network error; repeated failure across different videos is stronger evidence of a compatibility problem. Note whether the failure occurs before playback, after a few seconds, or only when an advertisement would normally appear.
5. Restart after updating
Filter and browser changes are not always applied to a tab that has been open for hours. Close the affected YouTube tab, relaunch Brave if it was updated, and open a fresh tab before judging the result.
6. Test the same baseline each time
For a useful comparison, use one ordinary video, one different video, and a fresh tab while keeping Shields in the same state. Avoid changing several privacy controls between tests. A consistent baseline helps separate a temporary YouTube issue from a setting you changed locally.
Android and other mobile platforms
Brave’s March 2026 update also discusses Android picture-in-picture and background-play improvements. That mention does not establish that every playback feature, setting, or interface is identical on Android, desktop, or other platforms. Follow the update notes and controls shown in your own Brave build.
Android checklist
- Update Brave through the device’s normal app-update mechanism.
- Open YouTube inside Brave and verify that Shields is enabled for the page.
- Test ordinary foreground playback before testing picture-in-picture or background play.
- If a feature is missing, treat that as a platform or version difference rather than evidence that ad blocking itself is broken.
Do not copy desktop troubleshooting assumptions to mobile. A release can improve Android background playback while a separate platform retains different controls or limitations.
When comparing devices, record the platform as well as the Brave version. A successful test on desktop does not prove that the same result will occur on Android, and an Android playback feature mentioned in release notes does not establish equivalent support on desktop or another mobile system.
When YouTube will not play with Shields on
A playback failure is possible, but it is not the expected result for every Brave user. One Brave Community report from June 2025 described a Windows 11 user who saw a YouTube warning and could not play videos while Shields was enabled; that user reported that playback returned after Shields was turned off. It is a dated, version-specific account from one person, not a universal rule.
Use a controlled diagnostic test
- Reload YouTube with Shields still enabled.
- Confirm that Brave is current, including the version check described above.
- Open a different video and, if practical, a second YouTube page in a new tab.
- As a short diagnostic only, turn Shields off for the affected YouTube site and reload once.
- If playback works only with Shields off, turn Shields back on after the test. Record the Brave version, operating system, and exact warning before seeking a version-specific fix.
The diagnostic tells you that the failure may involve the interaction between YouTube and Shields. It does not prove that disabling protection is the correct permanent solution. Leaving Shields off restores the ads and trackers that the feature is designed to block.

If the page is blank or the player loops
- Close duplicate YouTube tabs and open one fresh tab.
- Restart Brave after applying an update.
- Check whether the problem affects every video or only one page.
- Recheck the Shields state for the exact YouTube domain; a site exception can persist even when Shields works normally elsewhere.
- Avoid changing several privacy controls at once. One change at a time makes it possible to identify which setting affected playback.
If none of these checks changes the result, the behavior may depend on a current YouTube change that Brave has not yet addressed in your build. Keep Shields enabled if ad blocking is your priority and monitor Brave updates rather than assuming that a permanent workaround exists.
Read the symptom without jumping to the wrong fix

Brave can respond with new filter rules or browser fixes. Its March 2026 wording describes YouTube as temporarily circumventing Shields and says Brave landed fixes each time it happened. That statement documents an ongoing cycle, not a promise that future changes will be handled instantly.

Separate ad blocking from playback features
Picture-in-picture, background play, and ordinary foreground playback are different tests. Confirm that a standard video plays first. Then test the extra feature supported by your platform and build. A limitation in one mode does not by itself show that Shields is blocking the player.
