On Android, Google Phone’s Unknown setting blocks private or unidentified caller IDs—not every number missing from your contacts. On iPhone, you can screen calls from unsaved numbers or silence them to voicemail. Choose the option that matches the callers you want to stop, since broadly silencing unfamiliar numbers can hide calls you may need.
Choose what should happen to unfamiliar calls
“Unknown caller” can mean an unsaved number, a hidden caller ID, or a call identified as potential spam. The settings below treat those categories differently.

If you might receive important calls from a doctor, school, delivery driver, or new client, screening or spam-only filtering is generally less disruptive than silencing every unsaved number. Save expected callers in Contacts when possible. Apple also recommends saving important numbers such as family, a child’s school, and a doctor’s office.

- Open Settings > Apps > Phone.
- Under Screen Unknown Callers, choose the behavior you want:
- Never: Unsaved numbers ring normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: The caller is asked for more information before your iPhone rings.
- Silence: Calls from unsaved numbers are sent to voicemail without ringing your phone.
Review unknown calls and carrier-identified spam separately
To move missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into a separate list, turn on Call Filtering > Unknown Callers in the Phone settings. This list-filtering option is distinct from silencing calls.

Apple also documents a Spam filter for calls a carrier identifies as spam or fraud. Those calls are silenced, sent to voicemail, and moved to a Spam list. Carrier identification may depend on carrier support, so the feature is not a guarantee that every spam call will be identified.
iPhone screening limits to know
- Standard calling and data rates may apply to call screening.
- On iOS versions earlier than iOS 17, Live Voicemail must also be on for call screening.
- Calls are not screened while the phone is roaming.
- After you call emergency services, screening turns off for 24 hours.

How to block private or unidentified numbers on Android
These steps apply to the Google Phone app. Menu names and availability can differ on phones using another dialer or a manufacturer-customized version of Android.

- Tap More > Settings > Blocked numbers.
- Turn on Unknown.
This blocks calls from private or unidentified numbers. Ordinary phone numbers that are simply not saved in Contacts can still ring. Google explains this distinction in its instructions for blocking numbers in Google Phone.

Block a specific number that appears in call history
- Open Phone > More > Call history.
- Tap the call from the number you want to stop.
- Choose Block / report spam.
Google says calls from a blocked number are declined automatically. You can block a visible number this way even if it is not private or unidentified.

Google Phone on Android
In the Phone app, open More > Settings > Caller ID and spam. Turn on caller ID and spam identification to see information or warnings about callers outside your contacts; you can also enable Filter spam calls. Filtered calls may not trigger missed-call or voicemail notifications, but they remain in call history, and you can check voicemail.

There is a privacy trade-off: Google says a number from an outside-contact call may be sent to Google to identify a business caller or determine whether the call is spam. See Google Phone’s caller ID and spam protection guidance for details.

Google’s automatic Call Screen is separate from the Unknown block and is not available on every Android phone. Google says it works on Pixel phones with Android 10 or later, in English, in the United States. Contacts are not screened. Calls identified as spam can be declined without alerting you; for calls not detected as spam, your phone rings and you can inspect the caller’s response. Check Google’s Call Screen availability and instructions for the current feature details.
