It depends on where the comment appears. NPR discontinued comments on NPR.org story pages on August 23, 2016, so there is no current NPR.org story-comment button to block or report. For comments on an NPR social-media post, use the social platform’s own controls; for a member-station or project site, follow that site’s policy.
First, identify where the comment is hosted
NPR.org, a social-media service, and an NPR-affiliated station or project site may have different comment systems. The operator of the page or app—not the NPR name alone—determines which moderation controls are available.

| Where you see the comment | What to do |
|---|---|
| NPR.org story page | NPR ended story-page comments effective August 23, 2016. There is no current story-comment block or report control described by NPR’s announcement. |
| NPR post on a social platform | Use the platform hosting the post to find its options for reporting the comment and blocking or restricting the account. Available controls and labels vary by platform. |
| Member-station or NPR-affiliated project site | Check that exact site’s comment policy and moderation instructions; policies are not necessarily the same across sites. |
If the comment is on an NPR.org story
NPR announced on August 17, 2016, that it would end comments on NPR.org story pages effective August 23. Managing editor for digital news Scott Montgomery wrote, “After much experimentation and discussion, we’ve concluded that the comment sections on NPR.org stories are not providing a useful experience for the vast majority of our users.”
NPR cited audience and commenting figures as context for that decision: 25 million to 35 million monthly unique visitors, fewer than 1% of that audience commenting, and 2,600 people who had posted at least one comment in each of the previous three months, compared with 79.8 million NPR.org users in that period. Those figures describe NPR’s 2016 announcement, not current audience or traffic levels. Read NPR’s announcement about ending story comments.

If it is on a social-media post
Open the comment where it appears and use the host service’s current reporting and account-management controls. NPR’s 2016 announcement pointed to social media as a place for audience interaction, but it does not document today’s steps or button names for Facebook, Instagram, or any other service. Consult that platform’s own help guidance if you need instructions for a particular app.
If it is on a station or project site
Look for the site’s community guidelines, comment policy, or contact/moderation information. NPR-related sites can set their own rules. For example, StateImpact’s community guidelines describe moderation by site managers and reporters and identify content that may be removed, including spam, personal information, and personal attacks. That example does not establish the policy for every member station or project. See StateImpact Florida’s Community Guidelines.
Do not use NPR’s corrections form for comment abuse
NPR’s corrections form is for reporting errors in NPR’s broadcast or online journalism, not for reporting an abusive or inappropriate comment. Use the moderation route provided by the service or site where the comment is hosted. NPR’s corrections page explains how to submit a possible reporting error.
