How to Block InPrivate Browsing in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and 11

Disable Edge InPrivate mode on Windows 10 or 11 with Group Policy, a registry policy value, or Intune—and check for URL allowlist exceptions.

To stop Microsoft Edge from opening InPrivate windows on Windows 10 or 11, set the InPrivateModeAvailability policy to Disabled. You can apply it through Local Group Policy, a registry policy value, or—on organization-managed devices—Intune. Microsoft documents the Edge policy for Windows starting with Edge version 77.

Choose the management method that fits your PC

Use Local Group Policy or the registry for a PC you configure directly. For devices managed by an organization, an administrator can use Intune. Which options are available depends on the Windows edition and how the device is managed.

  • Local Group Policy: Configure Microsoft Edge’s Administrative Template policy.
  • Registry: Set the equivalent Windows policy value.
  • Intune: Set the Windows device restriction named Allow InPrivate browsing to No.

Disable InPrivate with Group Policy

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge policy settings in the Group Policy editor.
  2. Go to Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
  3. Open Configure InPrivate mode availability.
  4. Set the policy to Disabled and apply the change.

Microsoft’s policy reference says an unconfigured policy or one set to Enabled allows InPrivate pages; Disabled prevents users from using InPrivate. The policy is named InPrivateModeAvailability. See Microsoft’s InPrivateModeAvailability policy reference for the supported policy details.

Set the registry policy value

The registry equivalent is a DWORD policy value under SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Set InPrivateModeAvailability to 1 to disable InPrivate mode.

Microsoft documents these policy values but does not provide a consumer-facing walkthrough for editing the registry. Take care when changing registry settings: use the exact key, value name, type, and data shown above.

Block InPrivate browsing with Intune

For an Intune-managed Windows device, open its Windows device restrictions and set Allow InPrivate browsing to No. Microsoft lists this restriction as applicable to Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. The setting defaults to Yes; No prevents InPrivate browsing. Review the current template and device applicability in Microsoft’s Intune Windows device restriction reference.

Why some InPrivate pages might still open

Check whether the InPrivateModeUrlAllowlist policy is configured. Microsoft says this allowlist takes precedence over InPrivateModeAvailability: matching URLs can still open in InPrivate when the main policy is disabled, while other URLs are blocked. Review the allowlist alongside the availability policy if the exception is limited to particular sites.
