Redirect both UDP and TCP destination port 53 to Pi-hole when your router supports it, or block port 53 for every client except the approved resolver. Keep the resolver’s own upstream access exempt, cover IPv6, and test devices one class at a time. These controls handle conventional DNS; DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) requires a separate policy.
What you are trying to enforce
Pi-hole is a local DNS sinkhole: it answers device name-resolution requests and can refuse names on its blocklists. The project describes it as protecting devices “without installing any client-side software.” Read the official overview at Pi-hole documentation.

A normal home setup has three separate pieces:
- Address assignment: DHCP tells clients which DNS server to use.
- Gateway enforcement: the router or firewall controls where DNS packets may go.
- Resolution and filtering: Pi-hole answers permitted queries and forwards them to its configured upstream service.
DHCP is an instruction, not a lock. A television, speaker, camera, game console or embedded appliance can ignore the advertised address and send classic DNS directly to a public resolver. Gateway rules are what stop that bypass. They cannot, by themselves, identify every application that carries DNS inside ordinary HTTPS.
| Control | What it accomplishes | What it does not accomplish |
|---|---|---|
| DHCP DNS setting | Advertises Pi-hole to cooperative clients | Does not force a hard-coded destination |
| UDP/TCP 53 redirect | Sends conventional DNS from LAN clients to Pi-hole | Does not inspect DNS carried over HTTPS |
| Outbound port 53 block | Prevents clients from reaching external conventional DNS when paired with a resolver exemption | Does not stop DoH or other encrypted application traffic |
| DoH endpoint or device policy | Addresses DNS transported over HTTPS | Can be incomplete and may block normal web content |
Prepare the network before adding rules
Choose one resolver and give it a stable address
Install Pi-hole on an always-on Linux host with a fixed LAN address, either by configuring a DHCP reservation on the router or by using a carefully managed static address. A reservation is usually easier to change later because the router remains the source of address assignments. Record the resolver’s IPv4 and, if you use it, IPv6 addresses.

Do not leave two unrelated DHCP servers active on the same LAN. If both your router and Pi-hole answer DHCP requests, clients can receive inconsistent gateways, DNS addresses and lease information.
Decide which device should provide DHCP
The simplest arrangement is to keep DHCP on the router and enter Pi-hole as the DNS server in the router’s LAN or DHCP settings. Pi-hole also offers its own DHCP server; use that only after disabling the router’s DHCP service and confirming that Pi-hole can provide the gateway, address range and lease options your network needs.
Check the gateway’s enforcement features
Look for controls described as port-forwarding, NAT, DNS redirection, redirect-to-local, firewall rules or outbound service rules. You need rules that match LAN-originating traffic and can handle both UDP and TCP destination port 53. Also check whether the interface applies rules to IPv6; an IPv4-only policy can leave an alternate path open.
Consumer firmware varies widely. The available documentation does not establish one universal menu path or command syntax, so do not paste a rule intended for a different platform. Before changing anything, export a configuration backup or write down the existing rule order and addresses.
Advertise Pi-hole through DHCP
- Open the router’s administration interface and locate LAN, Local network or DHCP server settings.
- Find the DNS-server fields handed to clients. Enter the Pi-hole LAN address rather than a public DNS address.
- If the router presents separate primary and secondary fields, avoid adding an unrestricted public resolver as a fallback; clients may choose it and bypass filtering. Use a second controlled resolver only if you intentionally operate one.
- Save or apply the change, then renew a test client’s lease. On that client, verify that the assigned DNS address is Pi-hole.
- Open Pi-hole’s client or query activity and confirm that ordinary lookups from the test device appear there.
Lease renewal timing differs by operating system and appliance. Restarting a test device is a simple way to obtain the new settings, but it does not prove that every client has renewed. Check representative devices after their existing leases expire or renew them individually.
If you use Pi-hole’s DHCP service instead, disable the router’s DHCP service first, configure the router’s LAN gateway address in Pi-hole, define the address pool, and then renew leases. Keep a local management path available in case an incorrect pool or gateway setting cuts off access.
Enforce conventional DNS at the gateway
Method 1: redirect UDP and TCP port 53
A redirect rewrites LAN clients’ DNS destinations so requests reach Pi-hole even when a device has a hard-coded server. Create two rules if the interface distinguishes protocols:

- Source: the LAN or trusted client network.
- Destination port: 53.
- Protocol: UDP for one rule and TCP for the other.
- New destination: Pi-hole’s LAN address, port 53.
- Scope: LAN-originating traffic, not traffic generated by the router itself.
Some gateways call this a NAT redirect; others expose it as a DNS interception feature. Apply the rules before broad deny rules, and confirm that the router does not silently redirect the resolver’s own traffic back to itself.
Method 2: block external port 53 and exempt Pi-hole
If redirection is unavailable, create an outbound firewall policy that denies LAN clients’ UDP and TCP traffic to destination port 53 outside the local network. Add an allow rule for Pi-hole before the deny rule so the resolver can contact its configured upstream service. The exemption must match the resolver’s actual IPv4 and IPv6 addresses if both are enabled.
A block-only policy without an exemption can make every device appear offline because Pi-hole itself cannot resolve names. A redirect-only policy can also fail if the gateway’s implementation does not support the protocol or address family used by a particular client.
| Approach | Advantages | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Redirect UDP and TCP 53 | Hard-coded conventional DNS is delivered to Pi-hole automatically | Requires a gateway that supports LAN-side redirection; verify resolver traffic is not looped |
| Block outbound UDP/TCP 53 | Simple enforcement when redirect functions are missing | Requires an explicit Pi-hole exemption and careful rule ordering |
| DHCP only | Minimal configuration and easy rollback | Cooperative clients only; hard-coded destinations still bypass it |
Apply changes during a maintenance window. Save the configuration, then test from a wired or otherwise reliable client before restarting a large group of devices.

Keep Pi-hole and its upstream resolver reachable
Pi-hole must be able to send permitted queries to its upstream service. Place the resolver exemption ahead of a general port-53 deny, and ensure the rule does not block return traffic. If you run a recursive resolver such as Unbound on the same host, no additional hardware is required; it still needs outbound connectivity permitted by the gateway.
DNS normally uses UDP, but TCP is required for some large responses, retries and fallback behavior. Blocking TCP 53 while allowing UDP can produce intermittent failures that look like broken websites or updates rather than a total outage.
Check whether your ISP or router transparently intercepts DNS. Such interception can conflict with a local recursive resolver and may require a gateway setting that disables DNS proxying or changes the upstream arrangement. The exact option name depends on the firmware.

Repeat the design for IPv6. A client may obtain an IPv6 DNS address from router advertisements even when its IPv4 lease points to Pi-hole. Either advertise Pi-hole’s IPv6 address and enforce IPv6 port 53, or deliberately disable IPv6 on the LAN while you develop a complete IPv6 policy. Do not assume an IPv4 rule covers IPv6.

Test smart devices without taking the whole house offline
Test one device class at a time and record the result before expanding the rule. A useful order is:
- Name resolution: the device obtains an address and can resolve its service domains.
- Discovery: local pairing, mDNS-like discovery or vendor hub communication still works.
- Control: the mobile app can turn the device on, change settings and read status.
- Media functions: casting, streaming, voice control or notifications operate normally.
- Maintenance: firmware checks and updates complete.
Watch Pi-hole’s per-client query activity while performing each test. A blocked name that coincides with a failure is evidence for a targeted exception; it is not a reason to disable filtering globally. Allow only the required domain or client, document why, and retest after the change.
Keep a rollback path: a saved router configuration, local console access to the Pi-hole host, and a temporary way to remove the redirect or deny rule. If a device loses connectivity, reverting the gateway rule first distinguishes enforcement problems from an unrelated device outage.
Troubleshoot failures by symptom
The device is offline immediately after enforcement
- Confirm the client still has a valid IP address, gateway and DNS assignment.
- Check Pi-hole query activity for that client. No queries usually indicates a DHCP, address-family or rule-path problem.
- Temporarily disable only the new redirect or deny rule. If service returns, re-enable it and test with the client’s traffic visible in the gateway log.
- Inspect Pi-hole’s blocked-query record for a domain required by the device, then create the narrowest documented allow rule.
Pi-hole shows no traffic from a bypassing device
The device may be using IPv6, DoH or another encrypted resolver path, or the gateway rule may not match its network segment. Check both address families and gateway logs. A conventional port-53 redirect cannot make HTTPS-carried DNS appear as a Pi-hole query.

Intermittent failures often indicate that TCP 53 was omitted, large responses cannot pass, or one of the client’s DNS paths remains unrestricted. Verify both protocols, resolver return traffic and upstream reachability before changing blocklists.
Only one service fails
Use the timestamped Pi-hole query and gateway logs to identify the exact blocked name. Permit that specific dependency for the affected client when possible. Avoid adding a broad public DNS exception, which would restore the bypass you are trying to prevent.

Rules work on IPv4 but not IPv6
Check router advertisements, DHCPv6 settings and the client’s displayed DNS addresses. Add equivalent IPv6 redirect or deny rules and a resolver exemption, or turn off IPv6 intentionally until you can administer it consistently.
DoH is a separate control problem
DNS-over-HTTPS sends lookups inside HTTPS, normally over port 443. Port-53 interception and blocking therefore do not see those queries. A device with built-in DoH can continue using its chosen provider even when every conventional DNS packet is redirected.
Gateway policies that block known DoH endpoints can reduce some bypasses, but endpoint lists are incomplete and addresses can change. Overblocking may also prevent ordinary websites, application APIs or content-delivery services from loading because the same HTTPS infrastructure serves more than DNS.
For managed devices, the more reliable approach is a device or operating-system policy that disables unauthorized encrypted DNS and specifies the approved resolver. For unmanaged appliances, use the gateway’s documented encrypted-DNS controls if available, monitor failures, and accept that no port-53 rule alone provides universal enforcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a Pi-hole blocking response mode deliberately
Pi-hole’s current documentation lists several responses for blocked names. The default and recommended mode is NULL, but client behavior can differ by mode. Change it only when observed compatibility problems justify the trade-off.
| Mode | Response behavior | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| NULL | Returns an empty address response | Default and recommended starting point |
| IP-NODATA-AAAA | Returns an address for applicable queries while supplying no AAAA data | When IPv6-related client behavior requires a different answer |
| IP | Returns the configured blocking address | Only when a client or local policy specifically expects an address response |
| NXDOMAIN | Reports that the name does not exist | For clients that handle nonexistent names correctly; some software reacts poorly |
| NODATA | Reports no data for the requested record type | For testing compatibility with clients that distinguish empty data from nonexistent names |
Change one setting, test the affected device class, and review the resulting queries. Do not treat a response-mode change as a substitute for fixing a missing allow rule or a broken upstream connection.

Pi-hole is Linux software with minimal hardware requirements. A small, always-on Linux computer, including a Raspberry Pi-class single-board computer, can host it; existing hardware is sufficient if it remains powered and connected. The host runs the resolver software, not the gateway enforcement. Buying a host does not add DNS redirection to a router that lacks that feature.

Running Unbound on the same host is also a software configuration choice rather than a requirement for another computer. Plan for reliable storage, updates, time synchronization and a recovery method, because taking the host offline removes the resolver your clients have been instructed to use.
How to evaluate a router or firewall for this job
Raw wireless speed is less important than policy support. Before replacing a gateway, verify these capabilities in its documentation:
- LAN-side redirect or NAT rules for both UDP and TCP destination port 53.
- Outbound firewall rules that can exempt one resolver while denying other clients.
- Equivalent IPv6 controls, including traffic received through router advertisements.
- Readable per-client and firewall logs showing which rule matched.
- Configuration backup and a straightforward rollback process.
- Separate treatment for guest, IoT and trusted LAN networks if you segment devices.
Ask whether rules apply before or after the router’s own DNS proxy, whether local destinations are excluded automatically, and whether firmware updates preserve custom rules. If documentation does not clearly answer those questions, assume the feature may be limited until you can test it on a spare network.

Operate and maintain the setup
Keep a short change record containing Pi-hole’s address, DHCP settings, gateway rules, IPv6 decisions and every device-specific exception. Review Pi-hole’s client activity after firmware updates, because an appliance can add new domains or enable encrypted DNS without warning.
When changing upstream resolvers, first confirm that Pi-hole can resolve through the new service while the gateway exemption is active. When changing blocklists, monitor smart-device clients separately from computers so a newly blocked dependency is visible quickly.
To roll back safely, restore the router configuration or remove the redirect and deny rules, then renew a test client’s lease. Do not remove Pi-hole’s DHCP service and the router’s DHCP service at the same time unless you have already chosen which one will resume address assignment; otherwise clients may retain stale settings or receive no lease.
Bottom line for a reliable deployment
Use DHCP to make Pi-hole the intended resolver, enforce conventional DNS at the gateway for both UDP and TCP port 53, exempt Pi-hole’s own upstream traffic, and include IPv6 in the design. Validate each smart-device category and permit only dependencies that logs show are necessary. Treat DoH as a separate encrypted-traffic policy rather than promising that port-53 rules will capture every lookup.
