To block Spotify tracks marked explicit on your own account, turn off Allow Explicit Content in Spotify’s settings. For a child, a Premium Family plan manager can turn off the filter for that member, or set up a managed account with additional parental controls.
Turn off explicit playback on your own account
The setting is available in Spotify’s mobile and tablet apps and on desktop. Spotify’s labels differ slightly by device:

On a phone or tablet
- Tap your profile picture at the top of Spotify.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Under Content and display, switch off Allow Explicit Content.
On desktop
- Click your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Under Explicit Content, switch off Allow playback of explicit-rated content.
With the setting off, tracks Spotify marks explicit appear grayed out, cannot be played, and are automatically skipped. Set the filter for a child
For a Premium Family member
The Premium Family plan manager can use Spotify’s managed accounts for young listeners page to select a member and switch off that member’s Explicit content setting. This manages the filter for that member rather than changing the setting on every account in the plan.

For a young listener using a managed account
Spotify offers managed accounts on its free ad-supported plan and through Premium Family. Parental controls can restrict explicit-tagged content, videos and Canvas, as well as specific songs or artists. That makes a managed account the more targeted option when you need restrictions beyond Spotify’s general explicit tag filter.
Spotify documents six slots on Premium Family; a managed account on that plan uses one. If no Family slot is available, a parent or guardian can create up to ten managed accounts on the free ad-supported plan. These are Spotify’s service limits as documented in its support information accessed on October 7, 2026, and may change.

Before converting an existing account
Spotify’s setup guidance says converting an existing account to a managed account immediately removes access to some content and features, cancels active add-ons, and may delete listening history and some personal information. The change can be undone for seven days; after that, it becomes permanent and the data-deletion process begins. Review Spotify’s current managed-account setup instructions and the in-app flow before converting an account.

The setting applies to content carrying Spotify’s explicit tag. Spotify says it assigns tags based on information it receives from rights-holders. The control therefore blocks tagged content; it is not a guarantee that every mature, suggestive, or otherwise objectionable item will be filtered. Spotify’s explanation is that it includes explicit content because it offers music as the artist intends it to be heard.

For another household control, Spotify’s Kids and family music taste-profile option is not a content blocker. It affects how those streams contribute to recommendations and listening insights, and non-explicit tracks are not automatically classified as Kids and family music. See Spotify’s Kids and family music guidance.

Some releases have a clean version and others do not. Search for the song title on mobile, tablet, or the web player and look for a version without the explicit tag. On desktop, scroll to the bottom of the album’s track listing to check for other releases. Spotify says that if no alternative appears, there are no other versions of that album on Spotify.
