Quick Method: Block a Specific Sender (Yahoo Mail Web)

- Go to Yahoo Mail and sign in.
- Open an email from the sender you want to block.

- Open the Yahoo Mail app and sign in.
- Open the unwanted email.

Power Method: Create a Filter That Blocks/Discards Messages
Filters are best when you’re dealing with recurring campaigns, multiple addresses from the same company, or messages that slip past a simple block. This approach also gives you clearer control over where blocked mail goes.
On Yahoo Mail web, filters are typically found in Settings. Use the exact match patterns Yahoo provides to avoid false negatives.
Block Using a Sender Email Address
- In Yahoo Mail web, click Settings (gear icon).
- Select More Settings (if shown).
- Choose Filters.
- Click Add (or Create new filter).
- Set the criteria to From and enter the exact sender address (example:
[email protected]). - Set the action to Discard (or Move to Spam if discard isn’t available).
- Name the filter (example: Block [email protected]).
- Click Save.
Block Using a Domain (example.com)
Use this when the sender uses multiple inboxes under the same company domain.

What If the Sender Uses a Different Address Each Time?
That’s common with marketing platforms. Blocking one address may not stop every variant. Use one of these strategies instead:
- Domain filter: match
@company.comrather than a single mailbox. - Subject keyword filter: match stable campaign text (keep it specific).
- Action = Spam first: route to Spam, then adjust to discard once you’re confident it’s correct.
If you’re receiving phishing, also consider reporting it as spam/phishing from the message controls to train Yahoo’s classifiers.

Check if the messages are landing in Spam
- Open Spam in Yahoo Mail.
- Search for the sender name or email address.
- If you find them in Spam, your blocking is likely working. Decide whether to keep them in Spam or switch the rule to discard.
Review your filter order and settings
Yahoo filters can include multiple rules. If another filter moves the mail elsewhere, your action might not apply.
- Go to Settings > More Settings > Filters.
- Locate your blocking filter.
- Confirm the condition matches the exact field type you intended (From vs Subject; contains vs equals).
- Ensure the action is what you expect: Discard or Move to Spam.
Test with a fresh email from the sender
Before you change multiple settings, do a controlled test.

- Blocking too broadly: Subject keywords like sale or update can hit real mail. Use longer phrases.
- Copying the display name instead of the email address: filters match what’s in the email headers, not just the human-readable name.
- Using only “equals” when you need “contains”: campaigns often include extra prefixes/suffixes. Match the right operator.
- Forgetting that the sender changes: If the domain stays consistent, block the domain—not every individual address.
- Not checking Spam after changes: Some actions route mail to Spam first, which looks like “blocking failed” if you don’t check there.

Can I unblock a sender later?
Yes. Go back to Yahoo Mail block settings or filters and remove or disable the rule. Exact menu labels can vary by UI version, but the settings area is the place to edit saved blocks/filters.

Will blocking stop emails from the sender in the future, or only the next one?
Blocking and filters are designed for future mail. Messages already delivered (or already queued) may still appear depending on timing.
Does blocking on Yahoo Mail affect emails on iPhone or iPad?
Blocking is a server-side setting on your Yahoo account. Once it syncs, your iPhone or iPad Yahoo Mail app should reflect the same rules. Apps using IMAP may still receive previously cached messages, so check Inbox and Spam after a short delay.
