How to Block Access to Hidden Files on Your Web Server

A filesystem hidden flag does not secure a file over HTTP. This guide shows how to block dot-files on Apache, configure IIS Request Filtering, preserve .well-known discovery paths, and choose NTFS permissions for user-specific access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Block hidden files at the web-server authorization layer; a leading dot or a filesystem “hidden” flag does not stop an HTTP request when a client knows the path. On Apache, deny dot-prefixed files and directories with mod_rewrite while explicitly allowing /.well-known/. On IIS, use Request Filtering for hidden URL segments or denied extensions, and use NTFS permissions when access must differ by user.

Why hidden files need an HTTP rule

Unix-like systems commonly treat names beginning with a period as hidden in ordinary directory listings. That is a file-browser convention, not a network permission. MDN notes that a dot-file remains reachable when its name and location are known. A repository directory such as .git, a Subversion directory such as .svn, or a configuration file such as .env can therefore be requested directly unless the web server rejects the URL.

The same distinction applies to a filesystem hidden attribute on other operating systems. The web server maps a URL to a path according to its own rules. Apache’s security guidance puts the issue plainly: unless you change the mapping or authorization behavior, a file that the server can locate through normal URL mapping can be served to a client.

Use URL filtering to stop public retrieval. Use filesystem permissions when the requirement is identity-based authorization—for example, one authenticated account may read a file while another may not. These are different controls and should not be substituted for one another.

Decide what must be blocked

Dot-prefixed path components

A dot-file rule should cover a dot at the beginning of any URL path component, not only a file in the document root. That includes nested directories such as /assets/.cache/ and files below them. A request can expose a sensitive object even when the parent directory itself is not directly browsable.

Standard discovery files

Do not blanket-block every path beginning with a dot if your site relies on standard discovery documents. The /.well-known/ directory is the standard RFC 5785 path prefix for “well-known locations.” The Apache pattern below exempts qualifying files under that directory and then rejects other dot-prefixed paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backups and source artifacts

Hidden-file filtering does not cover every accidental exposure. Editor backups, configuration files, logs, and SQL dumps may use ordinary names or suffixes. MDN recommends a separate FilesMatch policy for these artifacts. Keeping that policy separate makes it clear which rule handles dot-files and which rule handles backup or source extensions.

Apache: deny dot-files with mod_rewrite

Use the rule in the effective authorization path

Place the rule where it is actually applied to requests: the main Apache configuration or an applicable per-directory configuration file, according to your hosting arrangement. A desktop setting that marks a file hidden has no effect on URL authorization. Confirm that mod_rewrite is available and that the configuration context you use permits rewrite directives.

Configuration pattern

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} "!(^|/)\.well-known/([^./]+./?)+$" [NC]
    RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} -d [OR]
    RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} -f
    RewriteRule "(^|/)\." - [F]
</IfModule>

The first condition exempts the permitted .well-known pattern. The next two conditions limit the denial to a path that maps to an existing directory or file. The rule then matches a path component beginning with a period and returns Apache’s forbidden result flag, [F], instead of serving the object.

Treat this as a pattern to adapt and review for your Apache version, URL normalization behavior, and application routing. Framework front controllers and other rewrite rules can change how a request is interpreted, so check the final, effective configuration rather than assuming a snippet in one directory controls every URL.

Preserve the exception deliberately

The exception is intentionally narrow. It does not make all dot-files under the site public; it permits only the qualifying files beneath /.well-known/ that your deployment needs. If your application publishes a discovery document there, test that exact path after enabling the deny rule.

Add a separate policy for non-dot artifacts

Use a separate FilesMatch policy for editor backups, configuration files, logs, SQL dumps, and similar source artifacts. Do not merge unrelated filename classes into the dot-file expression: separate rules are easier to audit, troubleshoot, and change when an application legitimately needs one type of file.

IIS: use Request Filtering

Block path segments with Hidden Segments

IIS Request Filtering has a hiddenSegments collection for URL segments that should be inaccessible. In IIS Manager:

  1. Select the site or directory whose requests you want to control.
  2. Open Request Filtering.
  3. Choose Hidden Segments.
  4. Add the relative segment you want IIS to reject, then apply the change.

Microsoft’s walkthrough also documents the corresponding AppCmd and configuration approach. Use that method when you manage IIS centrally or need a repeatable deployment, and keep the setting at the site or directory scope that matches your application.

Control extensions with File Extensions

Request Filtering also provides a fileExtensions collection. You can deny a specific extension, such as inc, or set allowUnlisted="false" and explicitly allow only the extensions your site is intended to serve. An allow-list is stricter, but it requires an inventory of every legitimate static extension; adding it without that inventory can block valid assets.

Microsoft documents that a request for a blocked extension returns HTTP 404 with a filtering substatus. Record the substatus in your diagnostics so operators can distinguish Request Filtering from an application-generated 404.

Understand hidden-file responses

When a client requests a hidden static file, IIS can return “HTTP 404.9 – Not Found” or an Access Denied message. The exact presentation depends on the IIS filtering and authorization configuration. A 404.9 response indicates that IIS prevented retrieval; it does not mean the file was removed from disk.

When NTFS permissions are the right control

Request Filtering is primarily a public URL suppression mechanism. If the requirement is “user A may read this file, but user B may not,” configure authorization with NTFS permissions and the appropriate IIS authentication and authorization layers instead of relying on a hidden segment.

Microsoft specifically cautions that the IIS application-pool identity must retain read permission for files the application is expected to serve. Removing that permission can break legitimate pages, APIs, or static assets while still failing to express the user-specific policy you intended. Set the minimum permissions needed by the application identity, then test both the authorized and unauthorized identities.

Deploy safely: a practical sequence

1. Inventory paths before writing the rule

List the dot-files and dot-directories that exist beneath the site, then identify any that are intentionally public. Check discovery endpoints under /.well-known/ separately. Also list ordinary-name backups, logs, dumps, and configuration artifacts because a dot-file rule will not catch all of them.

2. Choose the narrowest server control

For Apache, use the rewrite pattern for dot-prefixed path components and a separate filename policy for other artifacts. For IIS, add the required hidden segments and decide whether extension blocking or an explicit extension allow-list is appropriate. If access varies by account, design NTFS and application authorization instead of treating the file as merely hidden.

3. Apply configuration at the correct scope

Apache administrators with main-configuration access can place the rule in the server or virtual-host authorization path; shared-hosting users may be limited to a per-directory file. IIS administrators can apply Request Filtering at the site or directory level through IIS Manager or the documented command/configuration method. Verify that a child application does not override or bypass the parent setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check syntax and reload using your normal change process

Validate the configuration with the checks required by your Apache or IIS administration workflow before reloading or recycling the site. A syntax error or an unsupported directive can take a site offline, so make the change during a controlled deployment and keep the previous configuration available for rollback.

5. Test direct requests, not only page navigation

Use a browser, an HTTP client, or an automated smoke test to request each representative path directly:

  • A blocked dot-file such as an environment or repository file.
  • A nested dot-directory and a file below it.
  • A permitted file beneath /.well-known/, when your site uses one.
  • A normal public asset such as a stylesheet, script, image, or download.
  • An ordinary-name backup, log, configuration file, or SQL dump covered by your separate policy.

Confirm the expected status for each request and inspect the web-server logs. The goal is to demonstrate both denial and non-interference: sensitive paths must not be delivered, while legitimate application routes and public assets continue to work.

Troubleshooting common failures

A dot-file still returns its contents

Check that the rule is active in the virtual host or directory serving the request, that rewrite processing is enabled, and that another mapping or proxy is serving the path before the rule runs. Request the exact URL, including nested components, and review the server’s access and error logs. If the file is served by a separate static host, apply the equivalent policy there as well.

A legitimate discovery file is blocked

Compare the requested path with the exemption exactly. The Apache exception is for qualifying content below /.well-known/; a file outside that path remains subject to the dot-file rule. On IIS, inspect the hidden-segment entries and extension policy for an entry that covers the discovery path, then remove or narrow only the conflicting entry.

Normal assets return errors after an IIS allow-list

When allowUnlisted="false" is used, every served extension must be explicitly allowed. Identify the extension in the failing request, add it to the deliberate allow-list, and retest related assets. Do not respond by allowing every extension unless that is an intentional, reviewed policy.

IIS returns 404.9 or Access Denied

Inspect Request Filtering and the hidden-segment or extension collections first. If filtering is not the cause, verify NTFS permissions for the IIS application-pool identity and the authentication context making the request. A permissions change that removes the application identity’s read access can create an outage independent of URL filtering.

The rule blocks an application route rather than a file

Apache’s example checks whether the requested script filename maps to a directory or file before denying a dot-prefixed component. Application routers and URL normalization can still produce edge cases. Test dynamic routes that contain periods, review rewrite order, and narrow the conditions if your application intentionally uses a dot-prefixed route segment.

Operational practices after deployment

  • Keep dot-file blocking and backup/source-artifact blocking as separate, documented controls.
  • Review new deployment files and generated directories so a newly introduced secret is covered before it reaches production.
  • Retain logs for denied requests long enough to investigate unexpected probes and deployment mistakes.
  • Re-test /.well-known/ endpoints whenever you change rewrite or Request Filtering rules.
  • Apply the same policy to every public origin, including alternate virtual hosts or static-file services.
  • Use filesystem and application authorization for confidential data that should never be public, even if a URL filter currently blocks it.

What this protection does—and does not do

These controls prevent direct HTTP retrieval through the configured server. They do not erase secrets already committed to a repository, remove files from backups, or protect a copy exposed by another origin. Rotate credentials that may have been published, remove sensitive artifacts from deployment packages, and treat URL blocking as one layer in a broader access-control plan.

The correct implementation is therefore specific to the server and the exposure you are preventing: Apache needs an effective rewrite or authorization rule with an intentional /.well-known/ exception; IIS needs Request Filtering entries for hidden segments or extensions; user-specific access needs NTFS and application authorization. Verify each path directly and confirm the server logs show the intended decision.
