To compare inference hardware meaningfully, test the complete system on a workload like yours, hold model quality and software configuration constant, and measure throughput, latency, concurrency, and—if relevant—whole-system power together.
Why peak TOPS does not predict deployed inference performance
TOPS (tera operations per second) describes a theoretical or peak compute rate under specified conditions. It does not, by itself, tell you how fast a model will serve a request. Actual inference performance depends on the accelerator and the rest of the system, as well as the model, software framework, libraries, workload, and operating conditions. MLCommons says its MLPerf benchmarks aim for architecture-neutral, representative, reproducible evaluation because those components interact (MLPerf Inference).

That makes the relevant unit of comparison a configured system running a defined task—not a processor specification in isolation. MLPerf datacenter results identify the system, software, accelerator type, and accelerator count, providing context needed to interpret a score (MLPerf Inference Datacenter results). There is no universal conversion formula from peak TOPS to application performance.
Choose a benchmark that matches the deployment
Start with the question you need answered. Offline processing, an interactive service, and an LLM chat endpoint have different units of work and success criteria. A throughput result that suits batch processing may obscure whether one user waits too long for an answer.

- Offline or batch inference: Measure completed work per unit of time for a defined dataset and quality target.
- Interactive service: Measure request throughput alongside user-facing latency at the expected load.
- LLM generation: Track time to first token (TTFT), subsequent token generation speed, throughput, and concurrency. MLPerf Client explains inference performance metrics and scenarios (MLPerf Inference Client).
- Agent tasks: Include end-to-end task duration where it matters. Token rate alone does not capture time spent across the complete task.
For live LLM serving, MLPerf Endpoints v0.7 describes operating points using throughput, per-user interactivity, TTFT at the 95th percentile (TTFT P95), and concurrency (MLPerf Endpoints). Its release was announced July 28, 2026; label results with the suite and version because benchmark suites change.
Freeze the configuration before comparing systems
A fair comparison needs the same task and quality bar on both systems. Record the model and version, dataset or prompt mix, input and output lengths, quality target, precision or quantization, framework, serving software, accelerator type and count, and host system. A change in any of these can change the result or the quality achieved.
MLPerf benchmark definitions tie workloads to datasets and quality targets; a speed score is not meaningful for a task if the run misses the required quality (MLPerf Inference rules). Do not assume the workload inventory or rules for one release apply unchanged to another. As of October 4, 2026, MLCommons had announced Inference v6.1 results on September 16, 2026 (v6.1 announcement). The official documentation’s surfaced valid-list reference identifies the v5.0 round, so verify the rules and model definition for the particular result and release you use rather than treating that older list as the v6.1 inventory.

Measure serving behavior across load levels
One best-case result hides trade-offs. Run at multiple concurrency levels and report how throughput and per-user responsiveness change as load rises. For an LLM endpoint, keep these measures distinct:
- System throughput: Aggregate work completed, such as output tokens per second across requests.
- Per-user interactivity: The rate at which an individual user receives generated tokens.
- TTFT P95: The 95th-percentile wait before the first output token, capturing a slow tail rather than only a typical request.
- Concurrency: The number of simultaneous requests or users represented at that operating point.
TTFT is the initial wait; tokens per second (TPS) for subsequent output describes generation after that wait. A system can produce high aggregate throughput while individual users receive slow responses. Plotting or tabulating operating points makes the capacity-versus-responsiveness trade-off visible. MLPerf Endpoints reports these measures together (MLPerf Endpoints).

Set the application’s acceptable latency or per-user speed before naming a winner. Compare the capacity each system sustains while meeting that service target, rather than selecting a maximum-throughput point that violates it. This is an operating-point decision, not a universal ranking rule.
Measure power for the benchmarked system
If energy use or operating cost matters, measure average AC power at the wall during the same benchmark run. MLPerf’s reported power methodology covers the full system and applies only to the accompanying benchmark result (MLPerf Inference Datacenter results). State what was included in the measured system and tie the power figure to that workload and run.
A chip’s TDP or a power supply’s rating is not a measurement of the system’s consumption during inference. Do not substitute either for measured whole-system power, and do not compare power figures detached from their benchmark configurations.

Compare systems on the same axes
For each candidate, put the results side by side for the same model, precision, workload, and quality target. Record throughput at the required service level, TTFT and per-user generation speed at the intended load, concurrency behavior near saturation, and average whole-system power or energy if it is in scope. Include system price only when procurement value is part of the decision.
MLPerf Endpoints presents throughput, interactivity, TTFT P95, and concurrency together; MLCommons’ buyer guidance also discusses evaluating an operating point against price (MLPerf Endpoints). Treat the result as an answer to the workload and service target you tested, not a prediction for every model or deployment.

Benchmark numbers are meaningful only with their suite version and date. MLCommons announced Inference v6.1 on September 16, 2026, saying it added tests for emerging deployment patterns, including agentic inference (v6.1 announcement). That announcement also reported a 5.7× performance gain compared with one year earlier; this is MLCommons’ stated release-level comparison, not a guaranteed gain for any particular product or workload.
MLCommons’ July 2026 Endpoints v0.7 announcement reported historical aggregate claims of a 100× improvement in inference performance per watt and 50× improvement in training speed over eight years. These are organization-level historical claims, not forecasts for an individual system (Endpoints v0.7 announcement). Separately, the Inference v6.0 announcement said five of eleven datacenter tests were new or updated in that release; that figure describes v6.0, not v6.1 (v6.0 announcement).
