If the role is not assigned, the usual causes are an incorrect config path, a missing @steam suffix, leftover example IDs, strict-formatting errors, or an override password that is still enabled. The generated configuration file is the final authority because paths and keys can change between SCP: Secret Laboratory releases.

What you need before editing
You need access to the machine or hosting panel that runs the SCP: Secret Laboratory server, permission to stop and restart that server, and your SteamID64. A Steam username, display name, account URL, or short SteamID is not interchangeable with the 64-bit identifier required by the member list.
- Server access: You must be able to edit the server’s configuration files.
- Your SteamID64: This is a 17-digit number. A SteamID lookup service can show it, and some servers print a player’s identifier in the console when that player connects.
- A maintenance window: Stop the server before editing so it cannot overwrite the file while you work.
- The correct port directory: SCP: Secret Laboratory keeps configuration in a directory named for the server port, commonly
7777in examples.
Make a backup copy of config_remoteadmin.txt before changing it. If a formatting mistake prevents the server from starting or removes permissions, you can restore the previous copy.

Find the configuration directory for your server
The file is normally inside the configuration directory for the port assigned to your server. The location depends on the operating system and on whether you run the server yourself or through a control panel.

Do not assume that the first copy you find is active. Multiple ports, test instances, or old installations can leave several configuration trees on the same machine. Confirm the port in the server startup settings or console, then choose the matching directory. If the panel hides the operating-system path, its file manager should still expose the generated config_remoteadmin.txt.

Use a 17-digit identifier
Copy the complete Steam 64-bit ID, not your profile name. It is normally 17 digits and often begins with 7656119. Paste it without quotation marks or extra spaces. The value must identify the Steam account that will join the server.
Check the value from the server console
Joining the server while watching its console can reveal the identifier associated with your connection. This is useful when a lookup result is ambiguous or when you want to verify that the account you tested is the account you intend to administer. Copy the number exactly as logged.

Do not use a different identity type by accident
The member syntax distinguishes Steam accounts from other identity systems. A Steam account uses @steam. Discord IDs and studio accounts use different suffixes, so a bare number or an identifier copied from another service will not authenticate as a Steam member.
Edit config_remoteadmin.txt
- Stop the server. Use the server console or hosting panel’s stop control and wait until the process has fully exited.
- Open the active port folder. Navigate to the Windows, Linux, or panel path that matches the listening port.
- Make a backup. Copy
config_remoteadmin.txtto a separate name before editing. - Locate
Members:. This section contains account-to-role assignments. - Add your member line. Use the SteamID64, the literal
@steamsuffix, a colon, one space, and a defined role name. - Remove example entries. Delete demonstration IDs supplied in the generated file unless they are real accounts you intentionally want to authorize.
- Save as plain text. Do not let an editor append a second extension such as
.txt.txt, and preserve the file’s indentation and line endings.
A correctly shaped entry looks like this:
Members: 76561198xxxxxxxxx@steam: ownerThe number above illustrates the format. Replace it with your own 17-digit SteamID64. Keep the spacing used by the generated file; configuration parsers can treat a missing space, wrong indentation, or stray character as an invalid entry.
Why the suffix matters
The server does not interpret a bare SteamID64 as the same value as a typed identity. The expected Steam form is SteamID64@steam. Omitting @steam is a commonly reported reason for a member line being ignored even when the number itself is correct.
Why placeholder members cause trouble
Generated files often include example IDs to demonstrate syntax. Leaving those examples in place can interfere with role assignment or lead you to test the wrong account. Remove every sample member that is not an account you deliberately authorized, then add only the real IDs you need.

Choose a role and understand permissions
Community discussions commonly describe three default role names: owner, admin, and moderator. The exact permission set is controlled by the file’s Permissions: block and can differ if the server owner has edited it or if a game update changes the generated defaults.

Use the role names already present in the generated file. If you type a role that is not defined in the server’s role or permissions configuration, the member can authenticate but receive no useful commands. Before granting a lower-trust account a role, inspect the Permissions: mapping and confirm which commands that role can run. Per-permission names and defaults can change, so treat the current generated file as authoritative rather than relying on an old tutorial.
Grant the least privilege that works
Give yourself owner only when you administer the server. For helpers, start with moderator or admin and expand permissions deliberately. Every account in Members: can authenticate without the password override described below, so an accidentally listed ID is an access grant.
Disable the password override when using Steam authentication
Remote Admin can also expose an override-password setting. Community moderators have described that password route as buggy and recommend SteamID authentication for listed members. When you are authenticating through Members:, set override_password to none in the generated configuration rather than relying on a separate password.

The exact capitalization and indentation must match the key already present in your file. Do not invent a second copy of the setting. A password prompt after you have added a valid Steam member usually points to one of four problems:
- The server is reading a different
config_remoteadmin.txtthan the one you edited. - The member line lacks the
@steamsuffix or contains a typo in the 17-digit ID. - The account is still hidden behind an example or malformed entry in
Members:. override_passwordis still enabled, misspelled, or placed with invalid indentation.
After changing the override setting, save the file and restart the server. Do not publish the password in a chat, panel note, or script; a listed Steam account should be the normal authentication path.

Save, restart, and test the account
- Validate the file visually. Compare the edited sections with the comments and indentation in the newly generated file. Check that every member line is under
Members:and that the role spelling is consistent. - Save and close the editor. Confirm the file name remains exactly
config_remoteadmin.txt. - Start or restart the server. Configuration changes are applied when the server loads; editing while it is running may have no effect until the next restart.
- Join with the matching Steam account. Use the account whose SteamID64 you entered, not a second account on the same computer.
- Press M in-game. Once the server recognizes your role, the Remote Admin panel should open with the commands permitted by that role.
If the panel does not open, leave the server, stop it again, and recheck the path, ID, suffix, role, and formatting in that order. A successful login with missing commands generally indicates a role or Permissions: issue; no authentication at all more often indicates an identity or path issue.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The server still treats you as a normal player
- Confirm that you edited the port folder used by the live instance, not a test folder or an old installation.
- Re-copy the SteamID64 and compare every digit with the value shown by the server console or a trusted lookup.
- Ensure the line includes
@steamand follows the generated spacing exactly. - Delete unused example IDs from
Members:. - Restart after saving; a running process may continue using its previously loaded configuration.
You receive a password prompt
Check override_password first. If you intend to use SteamID authentication, set it to none using the spelling and indentation already shown in your file. Then verify that the active file contains your typed Steam member line. A prompt can also mean the server is loading another configuration directory.
The server fails to start after the edit
Stop the process and restore the backup. If the server starts with the backup, reapply only one change at a time. Compare colons, spaces, indentation, and section placement with the generated example. Do not paste smart quotes, tabs, comments from a different version, or invisible characters from a formatted web page.
The panel opens but commands are missing
The account may be authenticated with a lower role than expected, or the role may not have the required permission in the current Permissions: block. Check the exact role spelling in the member line and inspect the mapping in the same generated file. An admin or moderator entry is not guaranteed to have every owner command.

Changes disappear after an update
Updates can regenerate configuration files or alter keys and role definitions. Keep a dated backup, but merge changes into the newly generated file rather than replacing it wholesale with an old version. Recheck the current file’s comments, path, and permission names after every server update.
Security and maintenance practices
- Limit membership. List only accounts that need Remote Admin access.
- Protect the file. Anyone who can edit
config_remoteadmin.txtcan potentially grant administrative access. - Use separate roles. Reserve
ownerfor the server owner and assign staff the narrowest role that meets their duties. - Back up before changes. Keep the original file and a known-good copy outside the live configuration directory.
- Record intentional changes. Note which SteamID was added, which role it received, and when it was removed or changed.
- Review after upgrades. Compare the generated file with your backup because paths, role names, and permission keys may change.
- Remove departed staff promptly. Deleting an account’s member line revokes its SteamID-based access after the next restart.
Quick verification checklist
- Your identifier is the correct 17-digit SteamID64.
- The member entry uses
SteamID64@steam: role. - The role name exists in the current configuration.
- Sample IDs have been removed from
Members:. override_passwordisnonewhen SteamID authentication is intended.- The file is in the configuration directory for the live server port.
- The server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- You joined with the same Steam account whose ID is listed.
- Pressing M now opens Remote Admin with the expected commands.
Because SCP: Secret Laboratory’s configuration layout can change, keep the generated file’s comments and structure as your reference. If a guide conflicts with that file, follow the current file and test after a clean restart.
