On a self-managed Space Engineers dedicated server, you cannot grant yourself admin rights from the cockpit. The server owner or an existing administrator must promote your player through a server-management tool. In the official Dedicated Server Manager, the route is Admin Tools → Chat and Players → Online: select the player’s game name, choose Promote, then reconnect to the server and open the admin menu.

The same permission can be assigned through the VRage Remote Client, a hosting provider’s control panel, or (where the host permits it) a configuration file containing the player’s Steam64 identifier. The correct method depends on who controls the server and which management interfaces are available.

What becoming an admin actually requires
Administrator status is a server-side permission. It is not a setting that an ordinary player can switch on in the game client, and changing a local copy of a save does not grant rights on a remote hosted instance. Someone who already controls the dedicated server must apply the promotion.
For a private server that you operate, that person may be you using the management console. For a rented server, it is normally the account holder or a host panel user with permission to manage players. If another person owns the instance, they must promote your account or give you access to the provider’s administration interface.

Keen Software House’s official guidance covers dedicated servers for both Steam and Xbox. Players from either platform can be managed while they are connected to the dedicated server, although the exact buttons differ between the local manager, the remote client, a provider panel and direct file access.
What admin status gives you
After the promotion has been applied, the admin can use the in-game admin menu. Keen’s wording is: “Once promoted, any admin can start using the admin menu directly from the game client.” If the menu is not visible in the current session, leave the server and reconnect after the promotion is complete.

The Promote control is exposed by server-management software, not by the normal player interface. A player who has only joined the world has no supported route to grant their own account permission. Ask the owner or an existing admin to perform the change, or request access to the host’s management panel if you are responsible for operating the server.
Prepare the right access and identity
Before attempting a promotion, establish which of these situations applies:
- Self-hosted dedicated server: you can open Dedicated Server Manager on the computer running the instance.
- Remote administration: the owner has enabled the VRage Remote Client and can provide the server’s HTTP address, port and secret key.
- Rented server: the provider exposes a Players, Admins or Permissions page, or gives you configuration-file access.
- No management access: the owner or host support team must make the change for you.
Use the account that is actually connected to the target server. A display name is not a reliable identifier because names can be changed or duplicated. When a panel or configuration file asks for an identifier, use the account’s numeric Steam64 ID. It is the unique 64-bit number associated with the Steam account, not the visible nickname.
Also confirm the platform and instance. A Steam account promoted on one dedicated-server instance is not automatically promoted on another server, another save, or a different provider account. Xbox and cross-platform servers can be managed, but their panels may label the player list differently.
Official method: Dedicated Server Manager
This is the standard route when you run the dedicated server yourself and have access to the official manager.

- Install or open the dedicated-server tools. In Steam, open the Library, switch the library filter to Tools, and install or launch Space Engineers Dedicated Server. The manager executable is installed with the dedicated-server files.
- Start the target server. Use the manager to launch the instance you intend to administer. If you operate more than one world, note the instance name so you do not promote the account on the wrong server.
- Connect through Remote Client. In Dedicated Server Manager, use the Remote Client connection for the running server. The player-management controls are exposed after the manager is connected to that instance.
- Open the online-player list. Select Admin Tools, then Chat and Players, then Online.
- Choose the player. Find the player’s in-game name in the online list. Make sure the name belongs to the account you intend to promote, particularly if several players have similar display names.
- Promote the account. Click Promote. The manager applies the permission to that player on the connected dedicated server.
- Reconnect from the game client. Leave the server and join it again. Open the admin menu to verify that the permission is active. Reconnecting is the first remedy if the menu does not appear immediately after promotion.
If you are promoting another person
The owner or current administrator should ask the player to join first so the correct account appears under Online. Select the live player entry rather than trying to infer an account from a nickname or a previous chat message. Apply Promote, tell the player to reconnect, and have them confirm that the admin menu is available.
If you are promoting yourself
Join the server with the account you want to administer, then have the owner or an existing admin select that account in the online list. If you are the owner but are not currently listed, connect the game client before opening the player list. The manager still performs the promotion; the player client cannot do it by itself.
Use the VRage Remote Client instead
The VRage Remote Client is useful when the server runs on another computer but the operator has configured remote administration. It uses the same player-management functions as the local manager.

The server must have an HTTP URL, a port and a secret key configured before the remote client can connect.
- Run VRage Remote Client. Enter the server’s configured HTTP address, port and secret key, then connect to the intended instance.
- Open the player-management controls. Navigate to the administration area, choose the online players list, and select the account that should receive rights.
- Press Promote. Apply the promotion to the selected player.
- Reconnect in the game. The player should leave and rejoin the server before checking the admin menu.
The remote client does not remove the ownership requirement. You still need valid management credentials and access to the server’s configured endpoint. If you do not control those settings, ask the server owner to perform the promotion or to use the provider panel.
Getting admin on a rented server
Hosted servers are managed through the provider’s web panel rather than the copy of Steam or the game files on your computer. Sign in to the account that owns the server and look for a section labelled Players, Admins, Permissions or a similarly named player-management page.
When the panel has a promotion button
- Start the server or wait until it is running, depending on the provider’s interface.
- Open the player-management page.
- Find your connected account by its game name or account identifier.
- Choose the control labelled Promote, Make admin or equivalent.
- Save or apply the change if the panel has a separate save button.
- Restart or reload the server only if the provider instructs you to do so, then reconnect from the game client.
Panel labels and reload behavior vary by host. A successful web-panel change does not always become visible in an already-open game session, so reconnect before concluding that the promotion failed.
When the host asks for a Steam64 ID
Some providers expose an administrator list in the dedicated-server configuration instead of a player-selection button. Enter the player’s numeric Steam64 identifier in the administrator field or list specified by that provider. Do not substitute a display name, Steam vanity name or character name.

The exact configuration filename, property name and formatting are host-specific. Follow the provider’s instructions for saving the file and for restarting or reloading the server. If the panel hides the file or does not explain the required format, contact the host rather than guessing: a syntactically valid change in the wrong file will not affect the running instance.
When you are not the account holder
A regular customer or invited player may be unable to see administrative controls. Ask the server owner to promote the account, add you to a permissions group, or provide the panel access required by the host. If the provider has no promotion control, its support team can explain whether administration is handled by a panel, a remote API or a configuration edit.
Manual Steam64 configuration
Manual editing is an alternative for operators who have direct access to the dedicated-server configuration. It is not a universal in-game procedure, and it may require a restart or save reload.
- Identify the account. Obtain the player’s correct numeric Steam64 ID. Verify every digit with the account owner before editing the server.
- Open the server configuration exposed by the operator or host. Use the file and administrator-list field documented for that server installation. Do not assume that a local single-player save uses the same setting.
- Add the Steam64 ID to the administrator list. Preserve the existing syntax and any other administrators already present.
- Save the configuration. If the host uses a web editor, apply or save the panel change as required.
- Restart or reload as required. Some providers do not read permission changes until the server process or save is reloaded.
- Reconnect and verify. Join the same instance with the matching account and open the admin menu.
A configuration edit affects only the instance that reads that file. Editing a copy on your own computer, or changing a local save while the hosted server is running elsewhere, will not promote you on the remote world.

The official administration workflow supports dedicated servers used by Steam and Xbox players. The important distinction is not the controller or keyboard used in the game; it is the management interface available to the server operator.
- Steam-hosted or PC-managed instance: the owner can normally use Dedicated Server Manager, VRage Remote Client or a provider panel.
- Xbox-connected instance: the owner may use the host’s panel or the same dedicated-server management tools, subject to the provider’s platform support.
- Cross-platform server: manage the player through the server-side list and confirm the account shown there. Do not infer permissions from the platform label alone.
If a panel shows a platform-specific identifier rather than a Steam64 field, use the identifier and format the provider documents. When the documentation is unclear, the owner or host must confirm which account value the server accepts.
Why the admin menu is missing
Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different failure point.

1. Reconnect after promotion
Promotion may be applied while your current session is still using its earlier permissions. Leave the server completely, reconnect to the same instance and check the admin menu again.
2. Confirm the server instance
Owners often run several worlds or test instances. Verify the name, address and port in the manager or provider panel. A promotion applied to a staging world does not carry over to the live world.
3. Confirm the account identity
Compare the selected player entry or Steam64 ID with the account that is joining. A similar display name, a second Steam account or a mistyped numeric ID can place the permission on somebody else.
4. Check whether a reload is required
Provider panels and manual configuration edits may require a server restart or save reload. Follow the host’s stated procedure, then reconnect. Do not repeatedly edit the file while the server is running unless the host explicitly supports live reloads.

5. Check your management permission
If Promote is absent, you may be connected as a normal player, viewing the wrong tool, or lacking owner/admin access to the management interface. A game-client session alone is not enough to grant rights.
6. Ask the provider when the panel does not match
Hosted panels can rename controls, hide file access or implement permissions through a remote API. Tell support the server instance, the account identifier used, the time of the change and whether you reconnected. Ask whether the host requires a restart, reload or a particular administrator-list field.

Optional tooling: Torch
Torch is an optional third-party management platform. Its project documentation describes tools for administration and for interacting with server chat and commands without joining the game. It can be useful if the server already runs Torch, but it is not required for the vanilla promotion process.

Do not install a third-party platform solely to obtain the basic admin permission when the owner already has Dedicated Server Manager, VRage Remote Client or a working provider panel. Use the management system that controls the actual server instance; adding a separate tool does not change which account owns the server.

- Confirm that the request concerns the correct server and save.
- Have the player connect so the correct online account is visible, or verify the Steam64 ID supplied for configuration editing.
- Use the official manager, remote client or host panel that actually controls the running instance.
- Apply the promotion to the selected account, not merely to a similarly named player.
- Tell the player to reconnect and verify the admin menu.
- If the menu remains unavailable, check the instance address, account identifier and required reload procedure before changing anything else.
Quick procedure by situation
You run the server on your own computer
Open Space Engineers Dedicated Server from Steam’s Tools library, start the intended instance, connect through Remote Client, open Admin Tools → Chat and Players → Online, select the account and press Promote. Have the player reconnect.
You administer the server from another computer
Use VRage Remote Client after the owner has configured the server’s HTTP URL, port and secret key. Connect to the correct instance, select the online player in the administration controls, promote the account and have it reconnect.
You rent the server
Open the provider panel’s Players, Admins or Permissions page. Use its promotion control if available. If it asks for a numeric ID, provide the correct Steam64 ID and follow the host’s restart or reload instructions.
You are only a player
You cannot grant yourself rights through the game client. Ask the owner or an existing administrator to promote your account through one of the server-management routes above.
Bottom line
Admin status is granted by the server side, not by the player client. For a self-managed instance, the reliable official route is Admin Tools → Chat and Players → Online → select the player → Promote in Dedicated Server Manager. Remote Client and provider panels provide equivalent control when the server is elsewhere, while manual setups generally require the player’s Steam64 ID and any restart or reload specified by the host. Reconnect to the correct server and verify the admin menu before troubleshooting further.
