The quickest safe method
Project Zomboid stores permissions against the account username that joins the server, not necessarily the public Steam display name. The account must exist on the server before you grant it a role. The reliable sequence is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Start the dedicated server and join it once with the player account you want to promote.
- Open the live dedicated-server console, or the web console supplied by your managed host.
- Enter
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" adminwithout a leading slash. - If you are entering the command in the game’s chat window instead, enter
/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" adminwith the leading slash. - Disconnect and reconnect, then reopen the admin interface. If the command is rejected, run
help setaccesslevelon that server and use a role name valid for its build.
For a normal account named RiversidePilot, the console form is:
setaccesslevel "RiversidePilot" admin
The chat form is:
/setaccesslevel "RiversidePilot" admin
Host Havoc’s procedure also requires the player to have joined before the grant step; its current instructions were updated June 10, 2026 (technical procedure).

Console syntax versus chat syntax
The same command is interpreted in two different input environments. A slash tells the game chat parser that what follows is a command. The dedicated-server process and most hosting-panel consoles already expect a command, so the slash is not used there.
| Where you type | Correct syntax | Common mistake | What to do if it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated-server terminal | setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin |
Adding / at the beginning |
Remove the slash, confirm the server is running, and submit again. |
| Managed-host web console | setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin |
Pasting the chat version with / |
Use the console version and check the panel’s live output. |
| In-game chat | /setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin |
Omitting the slash | Open chat, include the slash, and make sure the account issuing the command already has permission. |
PZwiki documents administrative commands as available from either the console or chat when the issuing user has the required status, and notes that /help lists commands in chat (dedicated-server documentation).

Make sure the target account has joined
Start the server, connect with the exact account that should receive permissions, and let the character finish loading into the world. This creates the server-side player record used by the access-level command. If you try to grant a name that has never connected, the server can report that the player was not found.
Use the account username used to log in, not an assumed Steam nickname. Display names can differ from account names, and capitalization or spaces can matter. If the username includes spaces, retain the quotation marks:
setaccesslevel "West Point Builder" admin
When there are no spaces, quotation marks are still a sensible habit because they prevent accidental parsing errors when you later change a username.
Confirm you can reach the server console
On a self-hosted installation, the console is the terminal window or service log attached to the running dedicated server. On managed hosting, it is normally a browser-based console in the server control panel. Open it while the server is online; a stopped server cannot process the command.

If you are comparing self-hosting with a managed service, check these operational differences before you choose a route:
| Decision point | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Live console | You operate the terminal, service wrapper, or remote shell. | The provider may expose a web console; verify that it accepts live commands. |
| Slash handling | Terminal commands use no leading slash; chat uses one. | The same rule applies, but panel consoles often make it easy to paste the wrong form. |
| Build branch | You control whether the installation follows Build 41 or Build 42. | Confirm which branch the host’s image and documentation support. |
| Password management | You use the server’s account and password-management commands. | Check whether the panel has a documented account-password workflow. |
| Backups and restore | You must schedule and test your own save and configuration backups. | Check what backup, snapshot, and restore controls are actually included. |
| Ports and firewall | You configure the host firewall, router forwarding, and port exposure. | The provider may handle the network layer, but you still need to confirm assigned ports. |
| Geography and latency | You choose the machine’s location and network. | Choose a region close to the players and verify the available locations. |
Documentation from PineRiver and RespawnHost shows the same basic workflow through a hosting console, but neither the command syntax nor the role list should be assumed to be identical across game builds (PineRiver administrator guide; RespawnHost Build 42 command guide).
Using the built-in admin account
A new dedicated server normally asks you to create a password for its built-in administrator account on first launch. That account is separate from the ordinary player account you use every day. Sign in with the administrator account, then promote your regular account with setaccesslevel.
- Launch the dedicated server for the first time.
- When prompted, create and record the admin account password.
- Log in to the server with that administrator account.
- Join once with your ordinary player account so the account record exists.
- From the console, run
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin. - Reconnect using the ordinary account and open the admin tools.
The password is the one created during first launch. Editing a later panel field does not necessarily rewrite an already-created account. If you need to change it, use the server’s documented password command or the host panel’s account-password procedure rather than assuming a generic settings edit took effect. See the first-launch and account notes in the Host Havoc guide (account setup documentation) and the PineRiver instructions (administrator setup documentation).

Choosing the right access level
admin is the broadest commonly used operator role, but it is not always the right choice for every helper. The available names depend on the game build and server implementation. Run help setaccesslevel on the running server before copying a role from an older guide.
| Build or documentation branch | Roles documented | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Build 42 guidance | admin, moderator, gm, observer, priority, user |
Use the exact spelling accepted by your Build 42 server; priority and user are listed in this branch’s guidance. |
| Older Build 41 references | admin, moderator, overseer, gm, observer |
Do not paste a Build 41-only name into a Build 42 server without checking its help output. |
RespawnHost’s Build 42 command reference lists the newer set, while PineRiver records both Build 42 and older Build 41 terminology. The safest authority is the server itself: run help setaccesslevel, copy one of the levels it reports, and then apply it to the account (Build 42 list; Build 41/42 notes).

When to use a narrower role
Administrative access can expose player moderation, item spawning, teleportation, weather and world controls, and other server-management functions. Give a helper only the level needed for the job and reserve full admin for trusted operators. A moderator can be appropriate for moderation duties when your build exposes that level; a game-master-style role may fit event management; observer or priority roles have narrower purposes where supported. Because the exact capabilities can vary by build, test a role on a non-critical session before giving it to a new staff member.
Verifying that promotion worked
The command can be accepted before the client interface refreshes. After submitting it:
- Wait for the console to return a response or prompt.
- Disconnect the promoted account from the server.
- Reconnect with the same account username.
- Open the admin panel or try a harmless administrative function.
- If the controls are missing, close and reopen the interface, then run
help setaccesslevelto confirm that the command and role are recognized.
Do not test by spawning valuable items or changing the world on a live save. Use a low-impact check first, and make a backup before experimenting with broad controls.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Player not found”
- Have the target account join the server once and finish loading.
- Copy the account username used to connect; do not rely on a Steam display name.
- Preserve spaces inside quotation marks, as in
"West Point Builder". - Check capitalization and spelling, then rerun the console command.
The panel console does nothing
- Remove the leading slash. A web or terminal console uses
setaccesslevel, not/setaccesslevel. - Confirm the server is running and that the panel is attached to the correct instance.
- Wait for the command prompt or log response before sending another command.
The access level is rejected
- Run
help setaccesslevelon the live server. - Check whether the server is on Build 41 or Build 42.
- Use the exact role spelling shown by that server. In particular, do not assume the Build 41 term
overseerexists on Build 42. - Try
adminonly when you are authorized to grant the broad role and the help output confirms it.
The admin password is rejected
Use the password created for the built-in admin account during first launch. A later edit to an unrelated panel field may not change that existing account. Follow the server’s password command or the hosting panel’s documented account procedure to change it, then reconnect with the updated credentials.
You can run the server but cannot connect to it
For a dedicated server using the documented defaults, PZwiki lists UDP ports 16261 and 16262 as the standard connectivity ports (networking documentation). Check that both ports are allowed through the host firewall and, for a server behind a router, forwarded to the correct machine. Also verify that the client is using the server’s public address and that the server and client are on compatible game branches.
Security and operational practices
Protect the built-in account
Store the first-launch admin password in a password manager, do not paste it into public chat, and avoid sharing the built-in account when a separate operator account can be promoted. Separate accounts make it easier to remove one person’s privileges without changing every operator’s credentials.

Keep a recovery path
Before granting broad access, back up the server save and configuration. Record which account received which role and when. If an operator leaves, remove or downgrade that account rather than leaving unused administrator access active. Test that you can still reach the console independently of the player account; console access is the recovery route when an in-game permission change goes wrong.
Use the least privilege that works
Full administrator access can affect other players and the persistent world. Start with a narrower role when the documented role list and your staff duties allow it. Grant admin only to people who need server-wide controls, and review permissions after a build change because role names and behavior can change between branches.

Build 41 and Build 42: what to check after an update
An update can change the access-level vocabulary even when the promotion workflow remains familiar. Before upgrading a public server, note its current branch, make a backup, and read the role list reported by the upgraded server. Re-test promotion with a non-critical account, then verify that existing operators can still open the functions they need. A guide written for Build 41 may mention overseer, while current Build 42 documentation lists priority and user instead; the live help setaccesslevel output takes precedence.
Frequently overlooked details
- The player must have joined at least once before the account can be promoted.
- The username is the login account name, not automatically the visible Steam name.
- Quotes are required when the username contains spaces.
- Console and panel commands omit
/; chat commands include it. - Privileges may not appear until the player reconnects or the admin interface is reopened.
- Role names are build-dependent, so verify them on the running server.
- UDP ports 16261 and 16262 are the documented defaults for dedicated-server connectivity, but a host or custom configuration may use different assignments.
Complete procedure in one checklist
- Identify whether the server is running Build 41 or Build 42.
- Start the server and confirm you can open its terminal or managed-host web console.
- Join with the account that needs permissions.
- Record the exact account username shown by the server or login flow.
- Run
help setaccessleveland note the valid role names. - In the console, enter
setaccesslevel "ExactUsername" adminwithout a slash. - In chat, if you are already authorized, enter
/setaccesslevel "ExactUsername" adminwith a slash instead. - Reconnect and reopen the admin interface.
- Test a low-impact function, then document the account and role.
- Back up the save and remove or downgrade access that is no longer needed.
What success looks like
A successful promotion has three parts: the target account has a server record, the command is entered in the syntax required by its input location, and the role name exists on that build. Once those conditions are met, reconnecting the account should expose the appropriate administrative controls. If any one is missing, use the matching troubleshooting branch above instead of repeatedly pasting the same command.
