Set that password before the server starts, then enter it in the Admin Password field in the join dialog. Admin status is granted during connection; you cannot add it to an already-connected player. Once connected as an administrator, open chat with Enter, type a command beginning with /, and use /help to display the commands available on that server.

What actually grants admin access
The Forest uses a password-based administrator login for its dedicated server. The relevant server setting is serverPasswordAdmin. The official server documentation describes this value as the server administration password; a blank value means that no administration password is configured.

This is separate from the server’s Steam account setting. serverSteamAccount is a Steam game-server login token for app ID 242760. It identifies or authenticates the server with Steam; it is not an administrator list and does not grant moderator powers to a player.
There is also no documented Steam64 administrator whitelist for The Forest. Files and instructions named ownerswhitelist.txt belong to guides for Sons of the Forest, a different game. Applying those instructions to a The Forest server can leave you with a file that the game simply ignores.

Before you start
- You need control of the dedicated server configuration or its hosting panel.
- You need the exact administration password that will be sent to the server at startup.
- The server must be restarted after changing a configuration value or launch argument.
- You must enter the password while joining, not after you have loaded into the game.
- Use the same game edition and current server build expected by the host. Configuration guides for this game are several years old, so labels or behavior can change with a patch.
If you are only a regular player and do not control the server or know its administration password, there is no client-side command that can legitimately promote you. Ask the owner to configure the password and provide it through a secure channel.
Set serverPasswordAdmin in a self-managed dedicated server
Use this route when you run the dedicated server yourself and can edit its files. A community setup guide places the dedicated-server files under:
C:Users[USER]AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerds
In that path, [USER] represents the Windows account that runs the server. The guide reports that starting the dedicated server once creates the configuration files; first-run errors have also been reported as normal during generation. Treat that behavior as a setup observation rather than a guarantee for every current build.
1. Stop the server cleanly
Do not edit a configuration file while the server process is actively rewriting it. Stop the dedicated server, then make a backup copy of the current configuration file so you can restore it if a typo prevents startup.

2. Open Server.cfg
In the generated server directory, locate Server.cfg and open it with a plain-text editor. Preserve the file’s existing formatting and line endings. Do not add quotation marks unless the file already uses them for that setting.

3. Add or change the password setting
Set the administrator password on the serverPasswordAdmin entry. For example:
serverPasswordAdmin MyPrivateAdminPasswordThe example password is only a format illustration; replace it with a long, unique value. If the setting is present but blank, replace the blank value. If it is absent, add the entry using the same syntax used by the other settings in that file.
4. Save, restart and protect the value
Save the file, start the dedicated server, and keep the password out of public chat, screenshots and shared logs. Anyone who knows it can attempt to join as an administrator. If it is exposed, stop the server, change the value and restart it before relying on administrator controls again.
Pass the password at launch instead
The server also accepts an administrator password as a startup argument:

-serverpassword_admin <password>Command-line values override matching entries in the configuration file. This matters when a launch script, shortcut, service wrapper or control panel already supplies the argument: changing Server.cfg alone will not change the effective password while the override remains in place.
Use one authoritative value. If you maintain both a file entry and a launch argument, record which one is active and update the launch command whenever you rotate the password. After changing the argument, fully stop and relaunch the server; a simple player reconnect does not reload startup parameters.
Set the password on a hosted server
Many game hosts do not expect you to edit Server.cfg directly. Their control panel commonly has a startup or launch-options field labelled Admin Password. Enter the desired value there and submit or save the panel form, then restart the server from the panel.
On these hosts, the panel may translate the field into -serverpassword_admin <password> on the launch line. In that case, a manual edit to a downloaded configuration file can appear correct but have no effect because the launch argument wins. If the panel offers both a configuration editor and an Admin Password field, use the field identified by the host as the startup value, and check the generated command or startup log when available.
Join as an administrator
- Start or restart the dedicated server after the password has been configured.
- From The Forest multiplayer menu, select the server and begin joining it.
- In the join dialog, find the field labelled Admin Password.
- Enter the exact password configured in
serverPasswordAdminor supplied through-serverpassword_admin. Passwords are case-sensitive unless the current build documents otherwise. - Submit the join dialog and wait for the connection to complete.
- Open chat by pressing Enter. Type
/helpand send it to display the administrator commands exposed by that server.
The timing of step 4 is essential. The password is part of the join request, so entering it after you have already spawned in the world does not elevate that existing session. Leave the server, return to the join dialog, enter the password there and connect again.

Confirm that the login worked
The most direct documented check is to open chat and send /help. A response listing administrative commands indicates that the server accepted the administrator credential. If the message is absent or the command is treated as ordinary chat, assume that the connection was not granted administrator status and work through the troubleshooting section below.
Use the command list returned by the server rather than copying a list from a different game. The available commands can vary with the game build and server configuration. Administrative commands generally affect everyone on the server, so test unfamiliar actions with players warned and, where possible, with a recent world backup.
Troubleshoot a failed admin login
The password field was missing
- Confirm that you are joining a dedicated server that supports the administrator-password flow, not a normal peer-hosted session.
- Check that the server has actually started with a nonblank
serverPasswordAdminvalue or the launch argument. A blank setting means no administration password is configured. - Leave the server browser and open the join flow again after the server restart. A stale dialog can omit or retain old connection fields.
The password was rejected
- Check spelling, capitalization and accidental spaces. Copying a value from a panel can include a leading or trailing space.
- Determine whether a launch argument overrides the file. If
-serverpassword_adminis present, its value is the effective one. - On a hosted server, verify the panel’s Admin Password field and restart from the panel after saving it. Do not assume a local copy of
Server.cfgcontrols the host. - Confirm that the server process was stopped and started after the change. Editing a file while the process is running does not necessarily reload it.
You connected before setting the password
Disconnect and join again. Administrator access cannot be added to a session that is already connected, so changing the server setting while you remain in the world will not promote that player.

- Reconnect and enter the password in the join dialog rather than typing it in chat.
- Check that the server accepted the same value you entered. A host panel’s startup argument may differ from the visible configuration file.
- Make sure you are typing a forward slash:
/help, nothelp. Press Enter to open chat before entering it. - Ask the owner whether the server restarted successfully. A failed restart may leave you connected to an older process with different settings.
The configuration file is not where expected
Run the dedicated server once so it can generate its data directory, then look under C:Users[USER]AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerds. If you are using a commercial host, the provider may keep the file inaccessible and expose only panel fields. In that situation, the provider’s startup configuration is the authoritative place to set the password.
Commands and syntax that are not fully verified
The official wiki lists /ban (steam id) and /kick (steam id), but marks those entries as requiring more information. That means the exact argument syntax, identifier format and any additional options are not established by the available documentation here. Do not assume that a command copied from another game, an old forum post or a server-management plugin will work on the current The Forest build.

Use /help on your own server as the first reference. If a command is listed there but its arguments are unclear, test it only when you can recover from an incorrect action, and consult the current official wiki or your host’s documentation for the precise syntax.
Why common Sons of the Forest instructions fail
Steam64 owner whitelists
Some Sons of the Forest dedicated-server guides instruct owners to place Steam64 IDs in ownerswhitelist.txt. That method is not documented as the administrator mechanism for The Forest. The games have different server files and command systems, so copying the whitelist procedure can create false confidence without granting any rights.
cheatstick and cs:teleport
Lists containing cheatstick or cs:teleport also appear to describe Sons of the Forest, not the dedicated-server administration system documented for The Forest. Do not use those commands as a test of whether your password worked.
serverSteamAccount
As noted earlier, this setting is a Steam server login token for app 242760. It is not a player-owner list and should not be populated with your Steam64 ID as a substitute for serverPasswordAdmin.
Developer console and cheats: treat as unconfirmed
A forum report claims that the F1 developer console requires both serverPasswordAdmin and developermodeon, and that the server’s allowCheats setting also affects access. That combination is not confirmed by an official source in the available documentation. It should not be presented as a guaranteed administrator-login procedure.
If you are investigating developer features, make a separate test server, keep player backups, and verify the exact settings against documentation for the current game build. Ordinary administrator authentication remains the password-and-join-dialog process described above; enabling a developer console is a separate, potentially unsupported configuration.

- Use a password that is different from the server’s player password, panel password and personal accounts.
- Share the administrator password only with trusted operators. It is a credential, not a public server setting.
- Rotate it after an administrator leaves the team or the value appears in a public log.
- Keep a copy of the working configuration before editing it, and change one setting at a time when troubleshooting.
- Tell players when an administrator is testing commands that can remove or affect them.
- Record whether the effective value comes from
Server.cfgor a startup argument, especially when several people manage the host.
Quick administrator setup checklist
- Open the self-hosted
Server.cfg, or the hosting panel’s Admin Password startup field. - Set a nonblank value for
serverPasswordAdmin, or pass-serverpassword_admin <password>at launch. - Remember that a launch argument overrides the matching file entry.
- Save the setting and fully restart the dedicated server.
- Join again and enter that value in the join dialog’s Admin Password field.
- Press Enter to open chat and send
/help. - Use only the commands listed by that server and verify uncertain syntax before using disruptive actions.
Version and documentation caveat
The configuration references and hosting practices above come from documentation and community guides whose versions are not all current. Names such as serverPasswordAdmin and the password-based join flow are the documented basis for The Forest administration, but a future patch or hosting provider can change file locations, panel labels or command availability. When your server’s current build behaves differently, check its generated configuration and the current official wiki before copying instructions written for Sons of the Forest or for an older release.
