You can start streaming gameplay with a console, phone, or computer that can send a live broadcast, plus a stable internet connection. A microphone and camera are optional. Begin with equipment you already own, choose Twitch or YouTube, run a short test, and make the stream easy to follow and interactive. Earning money is a separate step: platform features do not guarantee payouts, and eligibility rules apply.
Choose a streaming setup that fits the device you have
You do not need to begin with a high-end gaming PC. Twitch describes computers, phones, consoles, and software encoders as possible ways to broadcast; YouTube also supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. Which method works depends on your device, game, and chosen platform.

Start with the simplest compatible workflow. Extra hardware such as a capture card is only relevant to particular device combinations; check compatibility before buying. No specific model or price is established here.

What you need before your first stream
- A device and workflow that can broadcast your gameplay to the selected service.
- A stable internet connection and, for a computer workflow, a way to encode and send the broadcast.
- A platform account in good standing that meets that platform’s live-streaming conditions.
- A game or other content you have the right to stream under the platform’s rules and applicable copyright terms.
A microphone and camera are not required to start. Twitch’s FAQ says, “No, you don’t need a mic or camera.” A microphone can still help viewers hear your commentary and make interaction easier. If you choose one, a USB microphone for streaming is an optional audio category, not a prerequisite; a headset microphone may also suit your device and preferences. Compatibility and performance vary, and no particular product has been tested or endorsed.

Pick a platform and check access rules
Twitch
Twitch supports several broadcast workflows, including computers, phones, consoles, and software encoders. Review its current live-streaming guidance and account requirements before setup: Twitch: How to Stream.
YouTube Live
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods; streams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. - Choose the platform and broadcast path. Decide whether to stream directly from a console or phone, or use a computer encoder. Confirm that your game device and platform support that path.
- Complete the platform’s account setup. For YouTube, verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is available. For any platform, review its current rules and account-standing requirements.
- Connect the game and broadcast controls. If using an encoder, select the game capture and the platform destination using that platform’s current setup instructions. Do not assume a particular bitrate, resolution, or keyframe setting applies universally; the reviewed official guidance does not establish one setting for every device, encoder, connection, and stream.
- Make a short, low-stakes test. Check that the game is visible, game audio is audible, your voice is balanced if using a microphone, and the broadcast remains stable. Check the title, category, and chat moderation settings before inviting viewers.
- Start with a clear stream identity. Use a title that says what game or activity viewers will see, and select the closest applicable category. Keep chat rules and moderation tools in mind, especially if you expect an open chat.
- Make the stream conversational. Explain decisions and what is happening in the game, welcome people who join, and keep the commentary going during quieter moments. Twitch highlights audience interaction; a camera is not a substitute for being understandable and engaged.
- Choose a schedule you can maintain. A predictable time can help people know when to return, but there is no guaranteed posting frequency or growth formula. Prefer a sustainable routine over a schedule that quickly becomes difficult to keep.
Understand monetization before counting on income
Streaming does not create an automatic paycheck. Feature access, eligibility for a platform program, and actual payout are different things. Sponsorships may be an option for some creators, but availability depends on the creator, audience, and deal; no typical income or guaranteed sponsorship can be assumed.

Twitch Affiliate and payout
Twitch’s currently published Affiliate milestones are 25 followers, four hours streamed, four different stream days, and an average of three viewers on four different days. Twitch says all four achievements must be completed to receive an invitation. Two-factor authentication is required to begin onboarding. Current requirements are listed in Twitch: Joining the Affiliate Program.
Twitch’s May 13, 2026 announcement distinguishes monetization tools from payout eligibility: eligible streamers can access tools such as Channel Points, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Bits, but payout still requires Affiliate or Partner status. Affiliate onboarding includes account details, the Monetized Streamer Agreement, and applicable tax interviews and payout setup; requirements can differ by region. Common first-stream problems
- You cannot start a YouTube live broadcast: Check channel verification, whether a live-stream restriction occurred in the previous 90 days, and the minimum age requirement. Follow the current YouTube Help steps if access is still unavailable.
- The game appears, but viewers cannot hear it: Check the selected audio source and device levels, then run another short test. If using a microphone, verify that the encoder or platform selected the intended input.
- Your voice is hard to hear over the game: Adjust voice and game levels separately where your setup allows, and test before a public broadcast. A microphone is optional, but clear audio supports conversation.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check connection stability and whether the device can capture and send the broadcast reliably. Test with a simpler setup before adding peripherals or changing multiple settings at once.
- You expected a payout after gaining access to tools: Check whether you have Affiliate or Partner status and have completed the applicable onboarding, tax, and payout steps. Tool access alone is not payout eligibility.
- A game broadcast triggers a copyright or policy concern: Review the platform’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and relevant copyright rules. Permission to play a game does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast every soundtrack, clip, or other third-party material in it.
