How to Batch Download Images from a Website: Browser, Wget and HTTrack Methods

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right way to batch-download images depends on your scope: use a browser extension for one open page, GNU Wget for a bounded set of linked pages, or HTTrack for an offline mirror. None of these methods guarantees every image: JavaScript may create URLs only after a page runs, sites may return thumbnails instead of originals, and access controls can block retrieval. After downloading, verify the files and check the license and reuse terms before publishing or sharing them.

Choose the method before you start

Decide whether you need selected images from one page, images referenced across several pages, or a local copy of an entire site. Your answer determines the tool and the likely gaps.

Method Best fit What it can discover Main limitation
Browser extension such as Imageye One open page Images the extension can scan, with filtering by size or URL and bulk selection Behavior and permissions are extension-specific; success varies by site
GNU Wget A bounded group of linked pages Image references exposed through HTML and CSS; recursive crawling with a depth limit Runtime URLs created by JavaScript may not be visible
HTTrack An offline website mirror HTML, CSS and linked files copied into a local directory It does not execute JavaScript, so script-generated images can be missed

Keep the starting URL and crawl depth as narrow as your project allows. A broad crawl consumes time and storage and may collect material you did not intend to download. Wget’s documented recursive mode is breadth-first and can be depth-limited; its overview also says it respects the Robot Exclusion Standard during recursive retrieval.

Download images from one page with a browser extension

This is the simplest option when you are choosing images from a single page rather than copying a site.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Open the target page in your browser and let it finish loading. Scroll through the page if images use lazy loading.
  2. Install a reputable image-downloader extension from its official browser-store listing. Review the requested permissions and the publisher’s current documentation first.
  3. Open the extension on the target tab and run its scan. Imageye’s listing describes filtering by image size and URL, selecting individual results, and starting a bulk download.
  4. Filter out tiny thumbnails, icons and tracking graphics. Prefer entries whose dimensions and file types match your needs.
  5. Select the images, start the download, and choose a destination if the browser asks.
  6. Open several downloaded files and check their pixel dimensions, format and visual quality. A page can expose a thumbnail URL even when a larger source exists elsewhere.

An extension listing is a description of intended capabilities, not an independent compatibility test. A consent wall, login requirement, lazy-loading implementation or browser permission can change the result. If the scan is incomplete, inspect the page’s image URLs manually or switch to a browser-automation workflow.

Use GNU Wget for linked pages

Wget is appropriate when images are referenced by a manageable set of HTML or CSS pages. Start from the smallest useful URL scope and set an explicit recursion depth. Exact switches and defaults can differ by installed version, so check the manual on the machine where you run it.

A bounded example

wget --recursive --level=1 --no-parent
  --accept=jpg,jpeg,png,webp,gif,svg
  --directory-prefix=site-images
  https://example.com/gallery/

This example asks Wget to recurse one level below the starting URL, avoid moving to parent directories, save into site-images, and accept common image extensions. Replace the URL and adjust the depth and filters for your site. If you need the HTML pages as well as images, remove the image-only acceptance filter and use a narrower host or path scope instead.

How Wget finds images

Wget parses references it can see in HTML and CSS. It does not magically enumerate every asset a server owns. Images inserted into the document only after JavaScript runs, URLs returned by an API call, and resources behind a login may not be discovered by a plain recursive run.

Keep the crawl controlled

  • Begin with a category, gallery or directory URL rather than the site’s home page.
  • Use the lowest depth that reaches the pages you need.
  • Limit accepted file types when you want images only.
  • Review the output log for redirects, denied requests and skipped URLs.
  • Stop and reassess if the crawl expands beyond the intended host or path.

Respect the site’s terms, access controls and crawl rules. A successful HTTP response does not by itself grant permission to republish an image.

Create an offline mirror with HTTrack

Choose HTTrack when the objective is a navigable local copy of a site, including its linked files, rather than a hand-picked image set. It offers command-line and graphical interfaces.

Command-line starting point

httrack "https://example.com/gallery/"
  -O "./gallery-mirror"
  "+*.example.com/gallery/*"
  -v

The URL, output directory and filter are examples; confirm the switches in the HTTrack version installed on your operating system. Configure the project so that it stays on the intended host and path. A mirror can include HTML, stylesheets and other linked files, so plan for substantially more disk space than the image files alone.

The JavaScript boundary

HTTrack parses HTML and CSS but does not run JavaScript. If an image URL exists only after a script executes, HTTrack may never see it. In that case, use a browser-based downloader after the page renders, obtain the asset URL from the page’s network activity, or use a site-specific export supplied by the owner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the downloaded collection

Batch operations can finish without producing the set you expected. Verification is part of the workflow, not an optional cleanup step.

  • Count and inventory: compare the number of files with the number of selected or expected images.
  • Open samples: test files from the beginning, middle and end of the run.
  • Check dimensions: confirm that you received originals or suitably large versions rather than thumbnails.
  • Check formats: browsers may deliver WebP or AVIF even when a page visually appears to use JPEG or PNG.
  • Find duplicates: responsive layouts can expose the same image at several URLs.
  • Review names and paths: URL-derived filenames can collide or contain characters your operating system treats specially.
  • Record failures: keep a list of 403, 404, timeout and authentication failures for a targeted retry.

For large collections, generate a manifest containing URL, local filename, byte size, content type and pixel dimensions. That makes it easier to identify a missing or low-resolution asset without opening every file.

Common problems and fixes

Only thumbnails were downloaded

Cause: the page’s visible image points to a thumbnail, while the larger file is linked separately or selected by JavaScript. Fix: inspect the page for a source or link to the larger asset, filter the extension by dimensions, and compare several candidate URLs before downloading the whole set.

Images loaded in the browser but are missing from Wget or HTTrack

Cause: JavaScript creates the URLs after the initial HTML arrives, or an API call supplies them. Fix: use a rendered-browser method, inspect network requests, or obtain a documented feed. Increasing recursion depth will not reveal a URL that is never present in discoverable HTML or CSS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The crawler leaves the intended section

Cause: links point to parent paths, alternate hosts or navigation pages. Fix: narrow the starting URL, add host/path restrictions and reduce depth. Stop the run if it begins collecting unrelated sections.

Downloads return 403, a bot check or a login page

Cause: the server requires authentication, blocks automated clients or serves a challenge instead of the image. Fix: use only access you are authorized to use, sign in through an approved workflow, ask the site owner for an export, or capture the rendered page rather than trying to bypass the challenge.

The run is slow or fills the disk

Cause: an overly broad scope, repeated responsive variants or large original files. Fix: lower recursion depth, restrict accepted extensions and paths, exclude unnecessary resources, and check free disk space before restarting.

Filenames are unusable or files overwrite one another

Cause: different URLs end with the same basename or contain characters invalid on your operating system. Fix: preserve the tool’s directory structure where possible, or rename files using a deterministic scheme that includes a hash or sequence number. Keep the original URL in a manifest.

Rights, terms and responsible use

Downloading a file and having permission to reuse it are different questions. The Imageye listing advises checking the image license and specific reuse terms before reusing an image. Review the target site’s terms and any license attached to each asset. USAGov notes that images and logos on federal websites may still be subject to copyright or other restrictions; that guidance is specific to federal materials and is not a blanket legal rule for every site or country. When the license is unclear, ask the rights holder or choose an explicitly licensed alternative.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need rendered screenshots of pages rather than a local crawl of original image files, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

Use the API with one GET request. The URL below is an example; replace it with the page you are authorized to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by many screenshot APIs, which can simplify a migration.

FAQ

Can I download every image from any website?

No. Login barriers, bot checks, robots rules, JavaScript-generated URLs and server-side permissions can prevent discovery or access. Treat “all” as a goal to verify, not a guarantee.

Should I use Wget or HTTrack?

Use Wget for a bounded, command-line retrieval of linked resources. Use HTTrack when you specifically need a local, navigable mirror and can accept that JavaScript is not executed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are some downloaded images different sizes?

Many sites publish responsive variants and thumbnails. Compare pixel dimensions and inspect the page’s source or network requests to identify the intended asset.

Is a downloaded image automatically free to publish?

No. Confirm the image’s license, the site’s terms and any attribution or permission requirements for your intended use.
