You usually do not need to convert every video just to use it in an OBS playlist. OBS supports several video formats, and its VLC Video Source can play a playlist directly. First check that your files play reliably; convert only files that fail or when you want a consistent format for YouTube uploads. If you do convert, a conservative target is MP4 with H.264 video, compatible audio, and the source frame rate preserved.
Do you need to convert all your videos to MP4 for OBS?
No—not if the files already play correctly in your OBS setup. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WEBM among the formats its Media Source supports. A file extension alone does not tell you whether its contents will work: a container such as MP4 can hold video and audio encoded with different codecs. If a file will not play, the problem may be the codec rather than the extension. See the OBS Media Sources guide and OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

- For an OBS playlist: try the files in OBS before converting a library. Use VLC Video Source for a playlist; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- For YouTube uploads: converting can be useful if the existing files do not meet your intended upload format or you want to standardize a mixed collection.
- For a file that fails in OBS: identify its container and codecs first. Re-encoding everything preemptively can take time and may reduce quality without solving the actual problem.
How to add a video playlist to OBS without converting
- Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video Source option to appear.
- Add a VLC Video Source to your scene. In OBS, add a source and select VLC Video Source. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add your video files in the intended order. Build the playlist in the source’s playlist controls. Confirm the order there rather than assuming that filenames or the folder’s display order will determine playback.
- Choose loop or shuffle for the use case. Enable looping if the playlist should repeat; enable shuffle only if you do not need a fixed sequence. Check the source’s settings for the controls available in your OBS version.
- Play through the files before using the scene live. Check picture, sound, duration, and sequence, including a file that uses a different format from the others.
OBS documents playlist playback through VLC Video Source; its guide does not establish that every possible codec combination will work. A short playback check is the practical way to catch a file-specific issue before relying on the playlist.

Convert files when a particular container or codec is not playing reliably, or when you deliberately want a consistent upload format. Distinguish two operations: remuxing copies the existing audio and video streams into a different container without re-encoding them; transcoding decodes and re-encodes streams, which can change compatibility, file size, processing time, and quality. Remuxing will not fix an unsupported codec inside the file. Transcoding may help, but an unsuitable quality setting can introduce additional loss.

The available official guidance does not verify a specific converter’s interface, batch workflow, or command syntax, so there is no universal set of button names or command-line recipe to give here. In whichever converter you choose, check that it supports batch jobs and lets you set the output container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, and destination folder. Process a representative file first; only start the full batch after confirming that the result plays as expected.
Recommended MP4 settings for YouTube uploads
YouTube’s current recommended upload encoding guidance calls for MP4 and lists H.264 as a video codec option. For audio it lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. Preserve the frame rate at which the content was recorded where possible, and avoid changing resolution or frame rate simply to make every file look alike. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

| Setting | Practical target | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Container | MP4 | A container is not a codec; confirm the video and audio streams too. |
| Video codec | H.264 | This is YouTube’s recommended upload guidance, not a requirement that every OBS source be H.264. |
| Audio codec | AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio | These are the audio codec options listed by YouTube’s guidance. |
| Frame rate | Keep the source frame rate where possible | YouTube says to use the rate at which the content was recorded. |
| Bitrate for SDR 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended upload reference, not a universal minimum or a prescription for other resolutions or frame rates. |
| Bitrate for SDR 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended upload reference, not a universal minimum or a prescription for other resolutions or frame rates. |
These bitrate figures apply to SDR uploads at the listed 1080p frame rates. They are not a reason to upscale a lower-resolution source or change its frame rate. For other resolutions, frame rates, or HDR material, consult YouTube’s encoding page rather than extrapolating from these two figures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA safe batch workflow
- Inventory the files. Note which ones already play in OBS and identify the files that actually need conversion. Keep the originals until the converted set has been checked.
- Choose the right operation. If the streams are already suitable and only the container needs to change, a remux may be enough. If the codec itself is the compatibility issue, use a transcode to the chosen output codecs.
- Set output options deliberately. For YouTube-oriented MP4s, choose H.264 video and one of YouTube’s listed audio codecs. Preserve each source’s frame rate and avoid unnecessary upscaling.
- Run one representative file first. Open the output in OBS and check its picture, sound, duration, and expected playlist position. This is a verification step, not a guarantee that every source file will behave identically.
- Batch the remaining files and inspect the results. Check that outputs were written to the intended folder, have usable filenames, and play through. Add them to the OBS playlist in the desired order and confirm that order in the source.
If you also upload videos through YouTube’s ordinary desktop upload flow, its Help page says you can select up to 15 videos at a time. That is multi-select upload support—not automatic batch conversion or automatic completion of each video’s details. You still need to edit details for each file. See Upload YouTube videos.

Troubleshooting: why a video will not play in OBS
The VLC Video Source option is missing
Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
An MP4 file still will not play
MP4 describes the container, not a single codec combination. Check the codecs inside the file against OBS’s format guidance. If the video or audio codec is the issue, changing the container alone will not fix it; a transcode may be needed.

The playlist is in the wrong order or behaves unexpectedly
Check the order in the VLC Video Source playlist itself and review whether shuffle or loop is enabled. Do not assume a conversion tool’s output naming or ordering will match the order you want in OBS.
The converted file looks or sounds worse
Transcoding re-encodes streams and can affect quality. Compare the converted sample with its original and review the converter’s output settings before running the rest of the batch. If the file played correctly before conversion, there may be no benefit to converting it.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud workflow rather than an OBS playlist converter: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a playlist made from mixed video formats to OBS?
Yes. The VLC Video Source supports playlist playback, and OBS lists multiple supported video types. Test each file in your setup because codec compatibility can vary even when file extensions look familiar.
Does changing a video’s filename extension to .mp4 convert it?
No. Renaming changes the filename, not the container or encoded audio and video streams.
