You can batch-compress PDFs and keep them searchable, but compression alone does not create or guarantee a searchable text layer. Keep originals, use OCR for image-only scans, choose moderate image compression, then check both page clarity and text search in the output.
What compression changes—and what it does not
PDF compression reduces file size by changing how content is stored, including images. It does not turn words in a scanned page image into selectable text. A scan may contain only image data; OCR (optical character recognition) analyzes that image and adds a text layer that can be searched and copied. Adobe explains the distinction in its Acrobat OCR instructions.

That means two separate checks matter: whether pages remain readable, and whether the document’s text layer still works. Neither is assured by choosing a compression setting alone; results depend on the source PDF and processing choices.
A safe workflow for a batch
- Keep a recoverable source. Copy the PDFs or direct the batch output to a separate folder. Do not overwrite your only originals. Adobe’s multiple-file compression workflow includes output-folder, filename, and overwrite choices; use them to keep source and output sets distinct.
- Identify scans before compressing. Try selecting or searching for a known word in a source PDF. If the page is just an image and has no usable text, run OCR before or as part of the batch workflow. Adobe documents OCR across multiple files, including a recognition-language choice and target-folder and filename options.
- Start with moderate compression. For mixed batches or documents where fine detail matters, avoid choosing the smallest-file option blindly. Test a representative file and inspect small print, diagrams, and photographs at ordinary reading size and at zoom.
- Check the result, not just the progress message. Compare output sizes, inspect representative pages, search for a known word on multiple pages, and copy a short passage. If OCR was applied, check that the recognized text is accurate and complete; Adobe recommends correcting errors or running OCR again when needed.
- Retain originals for consequential records. For legal, medical, technical, or archival documents, preserve the source and use an appropriate review process rather than treating a smaller file as an adequate replacement.
Choose a batch tool that fits the job
Adobe Acrobat desktop
Adobe documents a multi-file compression flow with output location, naming, and overwrite preferences. Its OCR workflow also supports multiple documents and a recognition-language selection. Advanced PDF optimization controls are documented for Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio on desktop; features can vary by platform and plan, so confirm the current product details before relying on a particular control.

Ghostscript for command-line batches
Ghostscript’s PDF optimization guidance describes the pdfwrite output device and presets such as /screen, /ebook, /printer, and /prepress. These are bundles of settings, not guarantees that a file will shrink or that every feature will survive unchanged. Ghostscript says rewriting recreates page drawing operations, and some metadata or structural information may not carry through. Its guidance is useful for understanding trade-offs, but it is not a version-pinned command reference; check documentation for the Ghostscript release you use before scripting a batch.
Adobe’s graphical workflow is designed around selecting files and choosing output options; Ghostscript is better suited to people comfortable with command-line processing and validating outputs. The cited documentation does not establish a complete comparison of privacy, price, or licensing, so check current vendor terms and your own handling requirements.

How image settings affect readability
For scanned PDFs, much of the file size and visible quality can depend on embedded page images. Adobe’s scan-settings guidance describes adaptive compression and recommends 300 dpi input for grayscale or color and 600 dpi for black-and-white within that scanning workflow. Those are not universal resampling instructions for every PDF you already have. The same page says its described text-recognition options require at least 72 dpi input; that is an OCR setting requirement in context, not a recommended image-quality target.

Ghostscript describes its presets as different size-and-quality balances: /screen favors low-resolution, smaller output; /ebook targets a medium-resolution balance; /printer favors higher resolution; and /prepress targets print quality. These descriptions apply to Ghostscript, not to similarly named settings in other software. Its guidance also warns that recompressing an image already encoded with JPEG can further reduce image quality.
Check more than file size
Before replacing or sharing a compressed set, compare the original and output along the dimensions that matter for your use:

- Visual fidelity: Look at fine print, thin lines, diagrams, and photographs in representative pages at normal reading size and zoom.
- Search and copy: Search for known words on multiple pages and copy a short passage to confirm the text layer remains usable. For OCR documents, check recognition accuracy and completeness.
- Size: Record the original and output sizes; a rewrite does not necessarily make every PDF smaller.
- Document features: Check bookmarks, links, forms, signatures, accessibility tags, color handling, and any archival requirements that matter to your use. Ghostscript notes limitations in preserving some metadata and structural information, so verify needed features rather than assuming compression preserves them.
If an output fails a check, retain the original and rerun a test with less aggressive image compression or another suitable workflow. Do not infer that a batch is safe merely because its files are smaller.
