How to Ban Players on a Space Engineers Server (Dedicated Server Manager Guide)

Ban a Space Engineers player from Dedicated Server Manager by opening Server Settings > Users > Banned, selecting the account or entering its 64-bit Steam ID, then saving and restarting when required.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To ban a player on a Space Engineers dedicated server, open the Space Engineers Dedicated Server Manager, select your world, go to Server Settings > Users > Banned, add the player from the friends list or player history, and save the configuration. If the player is not listed, add the account’s 64-bit Steam ID instead. You need administrator rights to manage the list; in-game administrators can also open Admin Tools with Alt+F10.

What a Space Engineers server ban does

A ban places a player’s account in the world’s Banned users list. The server then rejects that account’s later connection attempts until an administrator removes it from the list. Because the entry is stored in the server configuration rather than being only an in-game kick, it is the appropriate control when you need to prevent a player from immediately returning.

The control described here is for a world administered through the Space Engineers Dedicated Server Manager. A rented server may expose the same setting through a hosting panel, but the panel’s labels and restart workflow can differ. The underlying task is still to edit the world’s banned-users configuration and verify that it was saved.

Requirements before you start

  • Administrative access: only an account with server-admin permission can change the Users lists. Keen Software House states that players with a rank higher than None/Blank have admin rights and can access Admin Tools.
  • Access to the correct world: make sure the manager is connected to the server and world where the incident occurred. Each world has its own user configuration.
  • A player identifier: the player’s name is enough when the account appears in the manager’s friends list or player history. Otherwise, you need the account’s 64-bit Steam ID.
  • Permission to restart or apply configuration: the manager may require a server restart before a changed ban takes effect.

Keep the admin list limited to trusted moderators. An administrator can alter bans, grant further admin rights, and change other server settings.

Ban a player from Dedicated Server Manager

Use this procedure for a self-hosted PC dedicated server or any host that provides the standard manager controls.

  1. Open Dedicated Server Manager. Launch the manager used to administer the Space Engineers world. Select the server instance and world you intend to change.
  2. Open Server Settings. In the world’s configuration view, choose Server Settings. Do not edit a different world or a test instance by mistake.
  3. Open Users. Select the Users section. Keen’s official documentation places the Admins, Banned, and Reserved slots lists in this section.
  4. Choose Banned. Open the Banned users list. This is the persistent account list used for connection control; it is separate from the Admins list.
  5. Add the player. Use the list’s add control and select the player from the available friends list or the world’s player history. Check the displayed name carefully, especially when several accounts use similar display names.
  6. Save the configuration. Apply or save the server settings. If the manager reports that a restart is needed, stop and start the server through the manager or follow the host’s restart control.
  7. Verify the entry. Reopen Server Settings > Users > Banned and confirm that the intended account remains listed before the player tries to reconnect.

A kick only ends the current session. The Banned list is the step that blocks the next connection attempt, so do not close the manager after issuing a kick without also adding the account to Banned when a continuing restriction is required.

When the player is missing from the selector

The manager cannot always populate a player from friends or history. In that case, identify the account by its 64-bit Steam ID, the unique numerical identifier assigned to a Steam account.

Find the 64-bit Steam ID in the game log

  1. Launch the game while logged in to the account whose activity you need to identify, or have the affected player connect while you are monitoring the server.
  2. Open the Space Engineers game log generated after launch.
  3. Search the log for the player’s account or connection entry. The dedicated-server guide says the Steam ID appears in the game log after launching while logged in.
  4. Copy the complete numerical value without spaces, punctuation, or truncation. Confirm that it is the 64-bit Steam identifier, not a display name or another number shown near the connection message.

Add the ID to the banned list

  1. Return to Dedicated Server Manager > Server Settings > Users > Banned.
  2. Use the option to add a user by identifier, then paste the complete 64-bit Steam ID.
  3. Check the resulting entry for transcription errors. A single missing digit identifies a different account or an invalid entry.
  4. Save the configuration, perform the requested restart, and verify that the ID is still present in Banned.

Use the ID rather than relying on a renamed profile. Steam display names can change; the account’s numerical identifier is the stable value the server uses to distinguish it.

Apply the ban and confirm it worked

Configuration changes do not always become active at the instant you click Add. The manager indicates when a restart is required. If it does, use the manager’s controlled restart and wait for the world to finish loading before testing access.

  • Reopen the Users page and confirm the account or 64-bit Steam ID is in Banned.
  • Check that you edited the active world and not another saved world on the same machine.
  • Let the server finish restarting before judging the result. A connection attempt during shutdown can produce a misleading timeout rather than a ban response.
  • Have the affected account attempt a new connection only after the server is online. Do not remove the entry merely because the current session ended; removal is the unban action.

If the account can still connect after a confirmed restart, treat that as a configuration or identity problem: verify the world, the exact 64-bit Steam ID, and whether a hosting panel overwrote the file with an older configuration.

Admin rights and the in-game Admin Tools menu

Server owners normally maintain bans in Dedicated Server Manager, but an authorized administrator can work from the game client. Keen Software House says that once a player is promoted, “any admin can start using the admin menu directly from the game client.” The Admin Tools menu opens with Alt+F10.

To grant or revoke that authority, use Dedicated Server Manager > Server Settings > Users > Admins. Add only people who are expected to moderate the server. To remove a moderator, delete that account from Admins and save the configuration. Removing admin rights does not automatically remove the person from Banned or Reserved slots; those lists must be changed separately.

If Alt+F10 does nothing, the account probably has no admin rank, the key binding is different, or the client is not connected to the world whose permissions you changed. Confirm the account in the Admins list and reconnect after the permission change is applied.

How to unban a player

Unbanning is the reverse of the same configuration change. It does not require a separate console command.

  1. Open the correct world in Dedicated Server Manager.
  2. Go to Server Settings > Users > Banned.
  3. Select the player or 64-bit Steam ID you want to restore and remove it from the list.
  4. Save the settings.
  5. Restart the server if the manager requests one.
  6. Reopen Banned and confirm that the entry is gone before telling the player to reconnect.

If you banned an account by Steam ID, remove that exact ID. Deleting a similarly named profile or changing the player’s display name will not affect the numerical entry.

PC and Xbox hosting differences

The administrative concept is the same, but the hosting route differs by platform. Keen’s official Dedicated Servers page identifies GTX Gaming as the official host for the Space Engineers PC version and Nitrado as the official host for the Xbox version.

Situation Where you normally manage the ban What can differ
Self-hosted PC dedicated server Space Engineers Dedicated Server Manager, under Server Settings > Users > Banned You control the manager, configuration save, and restart.
Rented PC server The provider’s current control panel or a supplied Dedicated Server Manager connection Panel labels, ID visibility, file access, and restart timing depend on the provider.
Rented Xbox server The Xbox host’s current dashboard and its Space Engineers user controls The portal may not expose the same selectors or log view as PC; follow the provider’s current dashboard instructions.

The official documentation does not establish a universal price, support response time, or identical Steam-ID display for every host. Those values are provider-specific and can change. If a rented panel does not show Users or Banned, contact that host’s support or use its current Space Engineers administration guide rather than editing an unrelated file.

Troubleshooting common failures

The Banned section is not visible

  • Confirm that you opened Server Settings for the active world, then expanded Users.
  • Check your rank. A blank or None rank does not provide the admin rights required to manage users.
  • On a rented server, look for an equivalent user-management page in the provider panel. The exact portal labels can differ from Keen’s manager.

The player cannot be selected

Use the 64-bit Steam ID from the game log. Ensure the log was generated after launching while logged in and that you copied the entire numerical identifier. Do not substitute a character name, Xbox gamertag, or a shortened ID.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ban disappears after a restart

  • Recheck that you clicked Save or Apply rather than only changing the on-screen list.
  • Confirm that the restart used the same world and server instance you edited.
  • For rented hosting, check whether the panel has a separate “save configuration” action or scheduled restart process.
  • Verify the entry after the server returns online. If it is absent, the host may be restoring an older configuration.

The player reconnects despite appearing in Banned

  • Compare the connecting account’s 64-bit Steam ID with the value in Banned; a name match alone is not sufficient.
  • Make sure the server completed the required restart.
  • Check for duplicate worlds, proxy layers, or a different server address that the player may be joining.
  • If you use a rented panel, ask the provider which instance owns the public address and where its active user list is stored.

Alt+F10 is unavailable

Only promoted admins can use the in-game Admin Tools menu. Add the account under Users > Admins, save, and reconnect. If you are not the owner, ask an existing administrator to grant the rank instead of attempting to bypass permissions.

Moderation practices that prevent mistakes

Record the reason and identifier

Keep a private moderation record containing the player’s display name, 64-bit Steam ID, date, moderator, and reason. The name helps humans recognize the incident; the ID prevents confusion when names change. Do not publish personal information or expose administrative logs to ordinary players.

Separate temporary actions from a ban

Use a kick when the goal is only to end the current session. Add the account to Banned when future connection attempts must be blocked. This distinction prevents accidental long-term restrictions caused by treating every dispute as a ban.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the correct list

Admins, Banned, and Reserved slots are separate controls under Users. Granting admin rights does not ban someone, and removing an admin does not unban them. Change only the list relevant to the decision.

Limit configuration access

Store manager credentials securely and restrict access to the machine or hosting panel. Anyone who can edit Server Settings can potentially change the ban list or promote another administrator.

Questions administrators commonly ask

Do I need a Steam ID for every ban?

No. The manager can add a player from the friends list or the world’s player history. Use the 64-bit Steam ID when the account is not available in those selectors or when you need to verify identity precisely.

Where is the banned users list?

Open the world in Dedicated Server Manager and follow Server Settings > Users > Banned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I ban someone without admin rights?

No. Managing the Banned list requires administrator access. An account ranked None/Blank cannot use the administrative controls.

What if the player changes their name?

A ban entered by the account’s 64-bit Steam ID remains tied to that identifier, so a display-name change does not make it a different account. Verify the ID whenever the profile name is ambiguous.

Does removing a player from Admins unban them?

No. Admins and Banned are independent lists. Remove the account from Banned if you intend to restore connection access.

Recommended operational sequence

  1. Confirm the incident and identify the correct world.
  2. Verify that you are an authorized administrator.
  3. Open Server Settings > Users > Banned.
  4. Select the player from history or friends, or obtain and enter the complete 64-bit Steam ID.
  5. Save, restart when instructed, and verify the entry after startup.
  6. Document the action and keep admin access restricted to trusted moderators.
