How to Back Up Your PC Before Installing a Windows Feature Update

Choose OneDrive, File History, or an external-drive copy for important files—and verify the backup before starting a Windows feature update.

Before installing a Windows feature update, make a separate copy of the personal files you cannot afford to lose and check that the copy is accessible. Choose Windows Backup with OneDrive for selected folders, File History for versioned copies, or a manual copy to external storage. A Windows 11 in-place setup may default to keeping files and apps, but that is not a backup; a clean install can erase the existing drive.

First, identify what you need to protect

List the files and folders that matter, then check where they are stored. Common locations include Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music, but do not assume everything important is in those folders. Check other locations you use, such as project folders or files saved directly to another drive.

Pick a destination separate from the Windows installation. Your choices include OneDrive through Windows Backup, an external drive or network location configured for File History, or a manual copy to external storage. Microsoft’s guidance recommends backing up necessary files before proceeding with Windows 11 setup: Ways to install Windows 11.

Choose a backup method

Method Best suited to What to check
Windows Backup with OneDrive Syncing selected folders and settings to cloud storage The consumer Windows Backup flow described by Microsoft requires a personal Microsoft account and sufficient OneDrive space. Microsoft’s guide lists 5 GB of free OneDrive storage for a free Microsoft account; storage plans and account terms can change.
File History Keeping repeated versions of personal files on external or network storage Configure the destination drive or network location, and confirm that File History has saved the files you need.
Manual external copy Making a straightforward local copy of selected files Open the destination afterward and confirm the expected folders and files are there.

Windows Backup’s folder sync depends on available OneDrive storage and internet access. File History and manual copying use a local external drive or network destination, so consider where you need to access the backup and whether you want earlier file versions. Microsoft does not set a universal external-drive capacity recommendation in the cited guidance: compare the size of the files you want to protect with the space available. See Microsoft’s guides to Windows Backup and backup, restore, and recovery in Windows.

Back up with Windows Backup and OneDrive

  1. Sign in to Windows with the personal Microsoft account you plan to use with OneDrive.

  3. Check that your OneDrive account has enough available storage for the selected content. Microsoft’s current Windows Backup guide lists 5 GB of free OneDrive storage with a free Microsoft account; treat that as a plan detail that may change.

Check how you plan to install the update

The risk depends in part on the installation path and choices you make. Microsoft’s Windows 11 in-place Setup description says the default is to keep personal files and apps, while other choices are available; selecting “Nothing” removes them. Installing from Windows media by booting into a fresh installation can wipe the existing drive and its files. Back up before proceeding, especially if you intend a clean installation or choose an option that removes content. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation options and its guide to reinstalling Windows with installation media.

Do not mistake recovery tools for a file backup

Microsoft distinguishes these recovery tools from personal-file backups in its Windows backup and recovery overview.
