Before installing a macOS beta, complete a Time Machine backup to a separate, supported destination—such as an external drive or network disk—and keep that backup available. Apple requires a pre-beta backup to restore a Mac to a previously released macOS; a backup made after installing the beta is not a safe rollback point.
Before you begin: consider where to install the beta
Apple warns that beta software may contain errors or work less reliably than released software. It recommends installing it on a secondary system or device, or on a secondary partition on your Mac. If the Mac is needed for work or other critical tasks, testing on a separate system is the safer choice.

- Choose a separate destination. Use an external hard disk or supported network storage, not just the Mac’s internal disk. An external drive is a straightforward option; choose its capacity and connection based on your Mac’s storage and backup needs. Apple does not endorse a particular drive model. Apple’s Time Machine guide explains supported backup destinations.
- Check capacity and connection. Apple says a backup disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity is ideal—for example, 2 TB for a Mac with 1 TB of storage. This is guidance, not a strict minimum. Confirm the destination is supported by Time Machine and connect it. If you are troubleshooting a connection problem, Apple recommends connecting the disk directly to the Mac. Apple’s Time Machine troubleshooting guide
- Add the backup disk in System Settings. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Time Machine, then add a backup disk and follow the prompts. Labels and available options can vary by macOS version. Apple’s Time Machine setup instructions
- Wait for a backup to finish before installing the beta. Keep the destination connected until Time Machine reports that the backup is complete. Preserve this pre-beta backup; it is the recovery point Apple describes for returning to a previously released macOS.
- Keep the disk and its password available. You will need access to the backup destination to restore from it. If the backup is encrypted, you may also need its password. Apple’s restore instructions
What the backup can—and cannot—restore
Time Machine backs up files outside the macOS installation, including apps, music, photos, and documents. It does not back up system files or apps installed during macOS installation. Treat it as a recovery source for your files and data, not as a bootable clone or a complete copy of the installed operating system. Apple’s Time Machine guide

macOS can also create local Time Machine snapshots on the Mac’s internal disk, including before some macOS updates. Those snapshots share the disk with the original files and are kept only for a limited time or until space is needed. They can help recover files, but they do not replace the separate backup Apple recommends. Apple’s explanation of local snapshots
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you go back to the regular macOS after installing a beta?
Yes, but returning to a previously released macOS is not simply a matter of restoring personal files. Apple’s beta rollback guidance calls for erasing the Mac and restoring from a backup made before beta installation. The backup must be from the current OS version or a version that predates the beta. Do not rely on a backup created while running the beta as a rollback point to the earlier release. Apple Beta’s restore guidance
