If a drive reports a SMART warning or is showing signs of trouble, copy important files to a separate destination as soon as possible. Check that the copy is accessible before replacing the drive. A warning signals risk, but it does not tell you exactly how long the drive will keep working.
What to do when SMART says to back up and replace
Treat a SMART failure or “Backup and Replace” warning as urgent. Western Digital says a drive reporting SMART failure or errors is at risk and advises backing up to another drive as fast as possible. ASUS likewise recommends backing up and replacing a drive with a SMART BAD warning promptly, noting that continued use may result in data loss. Neither warning gives a dependable countdown to failure.

First identify which drive is reporting the warning, then focus on files you cannot easily recreate: documents, photos, work, and project files. Copy them to a destination that is physically or otherwise separate from the failing drive. A second folder or partition on that same drive is not a separate backup.

Choose a separate backup destination
| Destination | Best fit | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| External drive | A local copy, especially when you have many or large files or limited internet access. | Connect it to the computer and make sure it is distinct from the failing drive. Capacity and connector needs depend on your files and computer. |
| Network storage | A separate destination available over your local network. | It must be accessible to the computer and have enough space for the files you are saving. |
| Cloud storage or backup | Files you can upload and later access through your account. | Internet access is required. Large files or many files can take longer to upload and may cost more to store; confirm the upload has completed before relying on it. |
Microsoft notes that external or network storage can suit situations with limited internet or lots of data, while cloud backup needs an internet connection. Whichever option you use, make sure the copy is not on the drive at risk.

Back up files on Windows
Use File History for personal files
File History periodically saves changes to personal files to an external drive or network location. Connect or make the network destination available, then configure File History to use it. After it runs, use its restore or browse function to check that the folders you need appear in the backup.
Use Windows Backup for selected items
Windows Backup can sync selected folders and other items through your Microsoft account and OneDrive. Check which folders and items are selected, allow them to finish uploading, and confirm they are available through the account before replacing the source drive.

Do not rely on a Recovery Drive for personal files
A Windows Recovery Drive is for system recovery, not a backup of your personal documents and photos. Microsoft explicitly states, “The Recovery Drive doesn’t include your personal files.” Use File History, Windows Backup, or another file-backup method for those files.

Use iCloud Drive for selected files
iCloud Drive stores and syncs files you choose to keep in iCloud; it should not be treated as a full-device backup unless your specific setup covers the data you need. Confirm which folders or files are included and that they have finished uploading. iCloud storage uses space in your iCloud plan.
Copy files manually to an external device
You can also drag files to an external storage device. Open the destination afterward and check the copied folders and files rather than assuming a completed drag operation included everything.

Verify the backup before replacing the drive
Before proceeding, inspect the destination and make sure it contains the data you intended to save. Open a few representative files—such as a document, a photo, and a project file—to confirm they are readable. If you used a backup product, check that it reports completion and that its browse or restore feature can see the expected files.
- Confirm the destination is separate from the failing drive.
- Check that the important folders are present, not just that a backup task was started.
- For cloud storage, verify upload completion and account access.
If copying fails or the drive becomes inaccessible
Stop treating repeated copying attempts or diagnostic tests as a guaranteed safe recovery plan. A failing drive can become inaccessible, and there is no universal DIY recovery procedure established for mechanical or electronic failures. If the data is valuable and ordinary copying does not work, consider qualified data-recovery assistance before further use.

Replace the drive after your data is secure
Once you have verified the important files, proceed with replacement promptly. The correct replacement depends on your computer’s model and supported drive interface and form factor; the warning alone does not identify a compatible part. Check the computer manufacturer’s specifications or service documentation before choosing a replacement.
