Before a factory reset, make sure your Google Account backup is complete and separately verify photos, files, and app-specific data such as WhatsApp. Tapping “Back up now” is not proof that everything is saved: check the backup status before erasing the phone, because some data can only be restored during initial setup afterward.
What a Google Account backup does—and does not—cover
On supported Android phones, a Google Account device backup commonly includes apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. The exact contents depend on the phone, Android version, and individual apps; some apps do not back up or restore all of their data. Google’s Android backup guide also distinguishes data handled by particular apps: RCS messages require Google Messages, phone call settings and blocked numbers require Phone by Google, and photos and videos are handled through Google Photos.

Google says backed-up data is uploaded and encrypted in transit, and some data receives additional encryption using the device’s screen lock. Google Photos photos and videos are not encrypted with that screen lock, so do not assume every category has identical protection. A PIN, pattern, or password screen lock is recommended for backup protection. Google’s guide describes 15 GB of Google Account storage at no charge for backup; check your account’s available space before relying on a new backup.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Prepare the phone. Connect to Wi-Fi, charge the device, make sure you can sign in to the Google Account that should hold the backup, and know the phone’s screen lock.
- Open the backup settings. Go to Settings → Google → All services → Backup. Wording and placement can vary by Android version and manufacturer; if that route is not shown, search Settings for “Backup.”
- Check the account and selected data. Confirm the intended Google Account, open Backup details, and review the categories. Enable the types of data you need to preserve.
- Start the backup. Tap Back up now and leave the phone connected while it runs. Google says, “Your Google One backup can take up to 24 hours.” Wait for the interface to show that the selected data is saved; pressing the button alone does not confirm completion.

Photos and videos
Open Google Photos and confirm that the photos and videos you need show as backed up. A device backup status is not a substitute for checking the Photos upload itself. Once backed up, photos and videos are available through Google Photos after the reset.

Downloads and other files
For files and folders that need their own copy, use Google Drive to upload them manually. Review Downloads and any folders you use, including hidden folders: Google’s device-transfer guidance says downloads such as PDFs and media in hidden folders do not copy as part of its setup transfer. A phone-to-phone transfer is therefore not a complete substitute for checking files before erasing the old device.
WhatsApp and other apps
If you use WhatsApp, turn on and complete its own chat backup before the reset. Google’s Android transfer guidance says WhatsApp restoration depends on having enabled WhatsApp backup. Check other important apps individually; their data may require an in-app backup or may not be restorable at all.

Do the final checks before erasing
- Return to Settings → Google → All services → Backup and confirm that the data types you need are shown as saved.
- Confirm the relevant photos and videos are backed up in Google Photos, files have been uploaded or copied elsewhere, and WhatsApp’s backup has completed if you rely on it.
- If you recently changed your Google Account password, Google recommends waiting 24 hours before factory resetting.
- Use your phone manufacturer’s instructions for the reset itself; the reset menu and steps vary by device. Google’s reset guidance points users to manufacturer support for device-specific instructions.
Restore the data after the reset
During the phone’s initial setup, sign in to the same Google Account and follow the restore prompts to bring back eligible device-backup data. Some app data, settings, and messages can only be restored during setup, so do not skip the restore flow expecting to recover everything later. Google says restoration can take up to 24 hours. Photos and videos already backed up to Google Photos are available there.
Check compatibility before restoring onto a different phone: Google states that a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. Google’s backup and restore guidance also says device backup other than photos and videos may be deleted after the device has not been used for 57 days.
