Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Then open the copies to confirm they work. Screenshots, video captures, replay data, save files, custom content, and the game installation are separate things; a platform cloud sync or install backup may cover only some of them.
First, identify what you need to keep
“Game files” can mean several different things, and each may have a different location and backup method. A server shutdown can affect online features without deleting files already stored on your device; a delisting can make a game harder to download without necessarily removing local captures. Hosted captures, however, may be subject to a platform’s retention policy.

- Screenshots and captured video: images or videos saved by the console or PC capture tools.
- Temporary recording: rolling background footage that may be overwritten as space fills.
- Saved clips or replays: selected recordings or game-specific replay files. A replay file may require the original game to play, while an exported video is generally easier to keep and view independently.
- Save data: progress files, which may be local or synchronized for compatible games.
- Custom content and settings: mods, maps, configuration files, and similar additions.
- Installation files: the game itself. Keeping the installation does not automatically preserve saves, captures, or custom files.
Use a backup workflow that does not depend on one service
- Inventory the files. List the screenshots, clips, replay data, saves, custom content, or installation files you want to preserve.
- Make temporary footage permanent. Save important moments from a rolling recording buffer and export them to a standard video file when the tool offers that option.
- Copy files to a destination you control. Use an external storage device or a separate cloud account. Make sure the copy is outside the game or platform service that might close or stop supporting the title.
- Handle saves and custom files separately. Find the game developer’s instructions for file locations on your platform. Do not assume a capture export or installation backup includes them.
- Test the copy. Open files from the destination, check that videos play with useful image quality and audio, and confirm the expected files are present. Keep another copy of material you cannot replace.
Xbox: move captures off the Xbox network
Xbox Wire announced on September 27, 2023 that captures stored on the Xbox network would be deleted after 90 days. The announcement recommended backing up wanted clips and screenshots to OneDrive or external storage. Because that is a dated policy announcement—not a guarantee for every region, account, or later date—check the current status and retention information in the console’s Captures app. Xbox Wire’s announcement includes the policy and backup guidance.
On the console, press the Xbox button, then go to My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures. From Captures, manage and bulk-upload items, or set future captures to back up automatically to OneDrive. For a local archive, copy captures to external storage where supported. Check that the files are actually present and playable at the destination.

Steam: save screenshots and recording clips separately
Screenshots
Steam’s default screenshot hotkey is F12, used with the Steam Overlay. After you quit a game in which you took screenshots, Steam’s Screenshot Uploader opens; you can also open it from View > Screenshots or through the overlay. The uploader is a management and sharing feature, not a substitute for an independent archive. Copy the screenshot files you want to keep to a separate destination. See Steam’s screenshot guidance.
Game Recordings
Steam Game Recording offers background recording and on-demand recording. Background footage is temporary: it is overwritten as the allocated disk space fills. When a moment matters, use the timeline’s clip controls to save it. Steam says saved clips remain on the PC, and an edited clip can be exported as an MP4 video. The recording settings show the storage location and maximum space. For anything you want to keep beyond the rolling buffer, save the clip and copy or export it before uninstalling or losing access to the game. Details are in Steam’s Game Recording guide.

Do not treat cloud sync or an installation backup as a complete archive
Steam Cloud coverage is configured by each game’s developer. Check the game’s Steam store page for its cloud indicator, and verify which user files that game synchronizes. Cloud sync does not necessarily include screenshots, replays, every save, or other game-related data. Steam notes that files can remain local if a game does not sync or synchronization fails, and lost data may not be recoverable. See Steam Cloud documentation.

Valve says backups of its own games omit saved games, custom maps, and configuration files; its instructions identify additional folders to copy for custom content. Titles that rely on third-party installers or downloaders may not work with the feature. For third-party games, locate the developer’s instructions for saves and custom files and copy those separately. See Valve’s Backup Feature instructions.

PlayStation 5: export captures and verify them elsewhere
Sony’s PS5 capture guide says the console can take screenshots, record up to one hour, or save recent gameplay ranging from 15 seconds to one hour. Some content is blocked from capture, and capture settings control image and video formats and resolution. These limits describe capture creation, not a universal long-term export process. Use the current Media Gallery sharing or export options, then confirm the copied file outside the console before relying on it. See PlayStation’s PS5 capture guide.
Nintendo Switch: cloud saves are not capture archives
Nintendo Switch Online’s Save Data Cloud applies to compatible games’ save data; it is not a general screenshot or replay archive. Check compatibility in the game’s eShop or product details, or in the software’s cloud menu. Nintendo’s missing-backup guidance says cloud backups become inaccessible when membership expires, with access returning if the user resubscribes within 180 days. That is a save-data caveat, not a promise about captures or replay files. See Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud information and its missing-backup guidance.

Choose storage and verify the archive
An external drive is useful for a local copy of exported files; a separate cloud account can provide another copy. Check that your console or PC can use the storage and that it has room for the files. If you are preserving video, keep the exported file rather than relying only on a game-specific replay format, when both are available.
