Before factory-resetting an Android tablet, make separate checks for the data Google device backup covers, photos and videos in Google Photos, contacts saved outside your Google Account, and files stored locally. A backup switch does not guarantee that every app or folder is included. Verify each copy from its destination before erasing the tablet.
What each backup method saves
Android device backup, Google Photos, and a manual file copy serve different purposes. Use the method that matches the data you need to keep, and check its status independently.

Google says an account has up to 15 GB of storage at no charge, shared across Google services. Check the available space in the account you plan to use. Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours, so enabling backup is not proof that it has finished.
How to back up an Android tablet before a factory reset

Confirm the tablet and Google Account
Note the tablet manufacturer, model, and Android version. In Settings, confirm which Google Account is signed in and make sure you can access its credentials. A work- or school-managed tablet may have backup restricted by an administrator; Google notes that work-profile, work-only, and some company-owned configurations may not support the consumer backup flow.

Run Google device backup
On many Android tablets, open Settings > Google (or Google services) > Backup. Turn on backup if needed, then tap Back up now. Labels and paths vary by Android version and manufacturer. Review Backup details and the status to see which categories and apps are included.
Google lists supported categories such as apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. Its guidance warns: “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” For any app whose data matters, check that app’s own backup or export options rather than assuming Android backup covers it.

Back up photos and videos in Google Photos
Open Google Photos, verify the account shown, and go to Photos settings > Backup. Turn Backup on, then check Back up device folders and enable any relevant folders beyond the camera folder, such as folders used by messaging apps. Wait until Photos reports Backup complete or no items waiting to back up.

Google Photos is separate from Android device backup. Backed-up photos and videos are available in Google Photos after you sign in; they are not restored as part of the other device-backup categories.

Check where contacts are stored
Google Account contacts sync after you sign in to that account. Contacts stored only on the tablet or SIM may need to be moved, exported, or imported using the tablet’s Contacts options. Check important names in Google Contacts or on another trusted device signed in to the intended account; seeing a contact in the tablet’s address book alone does not establish that it is in the account backup.

Copy downloads, documents, and other local files
Review Downloads, Documents, audio, messaging-app folders, and any app-specific folders for files you need. Upload selected files or folders to Google Drive, or connect the tablet to a computer and copy them. Standard Android setup transfer may omit downloads such as PDFs and media in hidden folders, so do not rely on transfer alone for those items.

For a Samsung Galaxy tablet, Samsung documents Smart Switch and manual copying to a computer or external storage. Compatible models may support a USB flash drive or USB OTG storage; support depends on the model and connector. This is an optional offline route, not a guarantee that every desired category was copied.

Verify every destination before erasing
Return to Android’s Backup screen and review its status and details. In Google Photos, confirm completion and folder selection. Check contacts in the intended Google Account, and open copied files from Drive, the computer, or external storage. If a file is important, confirm it opens from the destination rather than relying only on a success message on the tablet.
Once these checks are complete, follow the tablet maker’s official instructions for its model-specific factory-reset process. Menu labels and reset steps can differ between manufacturers and Android versions.

Will photos, contacts, and files come back after the reset?
Photos and videos backed up with Google Photos are available in Photos after signing in to the same account. Other supported Google device-backup data is restored during device setup. Restoration can take time; Google says backup and restore may take up to 24 hours. Some restore flows require the old device’s screen lock. A backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older Android version, and restore behavior varies by device and Android version.
Contacts saved to the Google Account sync after sign-in; contacts saved only to the tablet or SIM require the separate handling described above. Files copied to Drive or another destination must be retrieved from that destination as needed. A factory reset erases local data, so if you need an offline copy, verify the copy on a computer or compatible storage before wiping.
