To back up Nextcloud with Portabase, run a Portabase Agent on the Docker host, give it access to the Nextcloud volumes through the Docker socket, and configure a project to send the necessary files and database backup to storage outside that host. A complete backup must preserve Nextcloud’s configuration, data, themes, any installed custom apps, and database; a successful backup job alone does not prove you can restore them.
What a complete Nextcloud backup must include
Nextcloud’s version 35 Administration Manual says there are five main things to retain:

- The configuration folder.
- The custom apps folder, if you have installed custom apps.
- The data folder.
- The theme folder.
- The database.
Use that list to check your actual Docker deployment. Identify which volumes contain the folders, and determine how the database is stored and backed up. Selecting a volume does not by itself establish that the database contents are captured in a recoverable form. Your Portabase project and database backup method need to cover all required state.

Nextcloud’s backup guidance describes maintenance mode as a way to lock existing sessions and prevent new logins while backup work is underway, reducing the risk of inconsistent files. Follow the instructions for your deployment and run the command as the HTTP user. The manual gives this example:

sudo -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --onKeep maintenance mode enabled while copying the relevant folders and completing the database backup, then turn it off when the work is finished:
sudo -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --offThese commands assume the documented path and user context are appropriate for your installation. In Docker, the command must run in the Nextcloud environment with the correct working directory and user; check your container’s setup rather than running it blindly on the host. For MariaDB or MySQL, Nextcloud’s manual also provides database-dump guidance. Choose a dump or snapshot approach appropriate to your database and deployment; an uncoordinated file copy should not be assumed to make the database and files mutually consistent.

Install and connect the Portabase Agent
Portabase’s Nextcloud tutorial uses a central Portabase dashboard and an Agent running on the Docker host where Nextcloud is deployed. The dashboard configures projects, storage, schedules, retention, and restore operations; the Agent performs the work on the host.

- Install the Portabase Agent on the Docker host that can access the Nextcloud deployment.
- In Portabase, open your organization’s agent settings and register the Agent. Configure the generated Edge Key on the Agent host as directed by the Portabase user guide.
- Confirm the dashboard shows the Agent as connected and displays a recent contact timestamp before relying on it for backup jobs.
- If the Agent runs in a Docker container, configure the Docker socket mount required for Docker-volume access, as described in the user guide. Grant access only where needed and treat access to the host’s Docker socket as a sensitive administrative capability.
Create a project and choose backup storage
In the Portabase dashboard, create a project for the Nextcloud instance, select the Docker volumes that contain the required Nextcloud folders, and configure the database backup so it is included in the recovery set. The tutorial describes selecting the Nextcloud volumes and running a backup; the user guide covers project, storage, and restore configuration. Check the resulting selection against the five-part checklist rather than assuming a volume selection is complete.

Portabase’s overview lists local/on-premises storage, S3-compatible services, Google Drive, Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, SFTP, and Rclone backends. It also says the same backup can be sent to multiple destinations. The appropriate choice depends on where your infrastructure is and what failure you need to withstand; the documentation does not establish a universally best destination or comparative performance.
Local storage versus a separate destination
Portabase’s local-storage guide says local backups are stored on the Portabase dashboard server. It describes local storage as suitable for testing, small infrastructures, or an attached network mount. If Portabase runs in Docker, persist its /data folder with a volume; the default Compose configuration does this, and backups are stored under /data/private/backups.

For production, the Portabase tutorial recommends infrastructure separate from the Nextcloud Docker host. A backup on the same machine may be lost in the same host failure; a separate destination provides better failure separation. An attached or network mount may suit some setups, but verify that it remains available and is not exposed to the same failure or deletion risks as the host.

- With the Agent connected and the project and storage configured, start a manual backup from the project dashboard.
- Watch the job status in the dashboard. The Portabase guide describes waiting, ongoing, success, and failed states. Investigate a failed job and verify its scope before treating it as a usable recovery point.
- After confirming the manual run, use the project’s schedule tab to set a cron schedule appropriate to your recovery needs. Configure retention as well, so the policy preserves the recovery points you intend to keep.
- Check that scheduled jobs continue to complete and that the destination has the expected backup data. Portabase’s tutorial recommends regular restore tests; schedule them as part of operating the backup, not just during initial setup.
Restore safely
A Nextcloud restore requires both files and database state. The Nextcloud 35 restore manual directs administrators to restore the configuration and data folders (or the whole installation and data folder) and restore the database. Reconcile the restore set with your deployment’s themes and custom apps as well as the database and folders. Portabase’s guide allows choosing an existing backup or a file from configured external storage.

Database restoration can overwrite current data. Nextcloud’s instructions say to remove the existing tables before restoring, commonly by dropping and recreating the database; Portabase likewise warns that restoring a database overwrites data in the target. Confirm the intended recovery database and preserve a recent backup before taking destructive action.
- Choose the intended recovery point and confirm the target Nextcloud instance, files, and database.
- Place Nextcloud into a safe maintenance state and prevent normal use during recovery.
- Restore the required folders and database using the procedure for your database engine and deployment. Do not point destructive database steps at a production database unless that is the intended recovery target.
- Bring the application back online and verify that users, files, configuration, themes, and custom apps behave as expected before ending the maintenance window.
Plan a restore test in an isolated or otherwise safe target so you can confirm the backup set and procedure without overwriting live data. No backup should be considered recoverable until its files, database, and target-specific steps have been validated together.
