How to Back Up Important Files Before Testing Potentially Malicious Software

Protect important files before testing suspicious software: make a separate copy, verify that it restores, and keep it out of reach during the test.

Before opening or running software you suspect may be malicious, make a separate copy of the files you cannot afford to lose, check that the copy can be read and restored, then disconnect or isolate it. A backup reduces the risk of losing data; it does not make running suspicious software safe or prove that backed-up files are free of malware.

Choose what you need to protect

Start with files that would be difficult or impossible to recreate: personal documents, photos, creative work, project files, and other important data. The right selection depends on how you use your computer; there is no universal folder list that captures every person’s important files.

Back up the files themselves to a separate destination rather than treating a copy left on the same computer as protection. NIST’s April 2020 guide for managed service providers describes a backup as a copy made to facilitate recovery and emphasizes planning, maintaining, and testing backups. Its guidance is useful for the recovery principles here, though it is not a complete home-user malware-testing procedure. NIST NCCoE backup guide.

Put the copy somewhere the test cannot reach

A removable external drive is one straightforward way to create a separate physical copy. Copy the selected files, confirm the copy completed, and disconnect the drive before running the suspect program. A drive that remains plugged in may still be accessible to software on the computer. CISA warns that ransomware can target backups that are accessible from affected systems and recommends offline, encrypted backups. CISA #StopRansomware Guide.

If you use an online backup service, check how it separates or protects backup copies; do not assume every consumer service provides isolation, immutable storage, or the same access controls. Microsoft’s organizational Azure guidance discusses isolated copies and controls such as MFA or PINs in its own context, not as guaranteed features of all backup providers. Microsoft guidance on Azure backup and restore planning.

Where practical, keep another copy in a separate location. More copies can improve resilience, but a copy that is continuously mounted or reachable from the test computer may share some of the same risk. Encryption can help protect the confidentiality of a backup, but it does not by itself prevent malware from deleting or encrypting a copy that remains accessible.

Check that the backup can actually be restored

A successful copy operation is not the same as a successful recovery. Open a few backed-up files from the destination and restore a sample to a separate location. This checks both that the files are readable and that you understand how to retrieve them. Do not overwrite the originals as part of a test restore.

Make restore testing part of your backup routine. CISA calls for regular backup testing, and Microsoft recommends periodic recovery tests with a defined scope and frequency. NIST’s guide likewise treats testing as part of maintaining useful backups. The appropriate schedule depends on how often your important files change and how much loss you could tolerate.

Keep the backup out of reach during any test

Once you have verified the copy, disconnect a removable drive and leave it disconnected while the suspect software runs. For an online backup, use the service’s available separation and access controls rather than leaving an ordinary mounted or synced copy exposed. CISA’s offline-backup advice is intended to reduce the chance that ransomware can reach and damage backup data.

This preparation addresses file recovery, not the broader hazards of executing malicious software. A backup does not contain or neutralize a threat, and it does not substitute for a properly isolated analysis environment.

Restore cautiously if you suspect the computer was infected

If a test appears to have infected the computer, do not immediately reconnect backup media or copy files back into everyday use. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends selecting a clean recovery point, restoring to an isolated, secure network, scanning restored data, and returning it to production only after it has been found clean. Its instructions describe Azure and organizational recovery scenarios; the general caution is to keep recovery separate from normal use until restored material has been checked. Microsoft FAQ on protecting backups with Azure Backup.

A backup’s integrity check and a malware scan answer different questions. NIST NCCoE notes that backup systems generally preserve data as stored and may not provide retroactive checks for corruption or malware; dormant malware may not be detectable until it becomes active. A readable restore therefore confirms recoverability, not that every file is harmless. NIST NCCoE on recovering from destructive malware.
