Classic Google Hangouts shut down in 2022, and the stated deadline for exporting Hangouts conversations through Google Takeout—January 1, 2023—has passed. If you saved an archive before then, keep it intact and inspect it on a desktop. If the conversations you need are in Google Chat now, you can export the Chat data available to your account. Neither route guarantees recovery of Hangouts messages that were never saved or did not migrate.
First, identify which data you need
“Hangouts data” can mean an old Hangouts archive, conversations that moved to Google Chat, or messages that may still appear in Gmail. These are different cases, with different limits:

- You already downloaded a Hangouts archive: Preserve the original and inspect a copy.
- You want conversations available in Google Chat: Use Google Takeout to export the Chat data available to your account.
- You never exported Hangouts before the deadline: You can check Gmail for chats that remain visible, but that is not a guaranteed recovery or export route.
What happened to Hangouts and its export window?
Google began redirecting web Hangouts users to Google Chat on November 1, 2022, and its status documentation describes Classic Hangouts as inactive and replaced by Chat in 2022. Google encouraged users who wanted a personal copy of conversations to export them with Takeout before the change. Google said most conversations would migrate automatically, but that does not establish that every conversation or attachment migrated or remains available.

Google Chat Help Community answers give January 1, 2023, as the deadline to export Hangouts conversations. That deadline has passed. Current Takeout guidance explains how exports work generally, but does not promise that a new Hangouts archive can be created today. You can check your own Takeout account, but do not rely on Hangouts still appearing as an exportable product or assume that an export will recover missing messages.

If you already have a Hangouts archive
Keep the original safe
- Keep the original downloaded ZIP or other archive unchanged. Make a second copy in a safe location with enough free space, such as computer storage, an external drive, or an available cloud destination. A second storage copy protects an archive you already have; it cannot recover messages that were never exported.
- Use a desktop computer to extract and inspect a copy of the archive. Google Takeout guidance points to an
archive_browser.htmlfile for information about export formats and viewing files. - Preserve the unmodified archive even if you try to make its contents easier to read. It is your reference copy if a conversion produces errors or changes the data.
Know what the files may look like
Historical instructions in Google Chat Help Community describe Hangouts conversation data as JSON and attachments as files in their original formats. This is community guidance about older exports, not a guarantee that every archive has the same structure or that Hangouts is still selectable in Takeout. JSON is structured data rather than a ready-made chat transcript, so opening it may not present messages in a convenient conversational layout.
If you consider a third-party converter or parser, check that it is maintained and determine whether it uploads files or processes them locally. Hangouts archives can contain private conversations and attachments. Do not upload a private archive unless you understand and accept how the tool handles it.

Export conversations available in Google Chat
- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the account whose data you want to save.
- Select the Google Chat data available to that account, then follow Takeout’s current prompts to create and download the archive.
- Store the downloaded archive somewhere safe with enough free space. Creating a Takeout export does not delete the data from Google’s servers.
- Inspect the downloaded files on a desktop. Takeout’s
archive_browser.htmlcan provide information about export formats and viewing the files.
Google says a Chat export can include profile information, memberships, messages, and attachments. The export reflects Chat data available to the account; Google’s Chat export documentation does not establish that it restores every legacy Hangouts conversation that did not migrate.
Work and school accounts have additional limits
Google says user-level Chat history exports do not include some group messages and spaces created by users with work or school accounts. If you use a managed account, contact your administrator about what can be exported. Google also describes an organization export option for super administrators, with a limitation for group messages and spaces created by users outside the organization’s domain.

If you missed the Hangouts export deadline
As a cautious account-specific check, search Gmail for in:chats while signed in to the account that held the conversations. Google Chat Help Community guidance suggests that some conversations may remain visible this way, but it does not guarantee their future availability. Finding a conversation in Gmail is not proof that you can export all its data or attachments.
If the conversation is not in an archive or visible in an account interface, the available guidance does not establish an official restoration route. Avoid services that promise they can recover expired Hangouts data unless you can independently verify how they work and how they handle your private information.

Which route should you use?
