Back up important files before troubleshooting an unstable SSD. Make a separate copy, check that the files open from the destination, and only then consider repairs, resets, reinstalls, or formatting. A recovery tool or health warning is not a substitute for a verified copy of personal files.
What to do first when an SSD seems unstable
- Pause repair attempts. If the drive still opens files, avoid starting with stress tests, repair scans, repeated restarts, resets, or formatting while it holds the only copy of valuable data. Microsoft warns that some Windows recovery options can cause data loss and advises backing up first in its Recovery options in Windows guidance.
- Connect a separate destination. Use an external drive, a network location, or a cloud backup workflow that is available to you and has enough free space. Do not treat another partition on the same unstable SSD as a separate backup.
- Copy the most important files first. Start with irreplaceable or hard-to-replace personal files, then copy the rest of the folders you need.
- Verify the copy independently. Browse the destination, confirm files are present in the expected folders, and open a few important files from that destination when practical.
- Only then troubleshoot. If the files cannot be accessed or are uniquely valuable, stop DIY attempts and seek qualified data-recovery help. Official guidance does not define a universal point at which every unstable SSD must be powered off, so the right next step depends on symptoms and the value of the data.
Choose a backup path that actually protects your files
The right option depends on whether the computer is usable, what destination you can reach, and whether you need personal files or a way to restore Windows. These options are not interchangeable.

| Option | Destination and scope | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Manual copy in File Explorer | External storage; selected personal files and folders | Lets you browse the destination and check copied files separately. Microsoft’s external-storage instructions describe this approach. |
| File History | External drive or network location; files in the configured backup scope | A Windows backup option, but it is a different workflow from making a manual copy. See Microsoft’s Windows backup, restore, and recovery overview. |
| Windows Backup | OneDrive cloud storage; selected folders, plus apps and settings according to Microsoft’s recovery guidance | Requires a Microsoft account and a usable Windows session. Folder syncing is not a complete image of the SSD or a guarantee that every file location is included. |
| Time Machine | Mac backup disk | Apple’s backup workflow for Mac. Capacity, connection, and pending cloud synchronization can affect whether a backup completes. |
| Windows Recovery Drive | Recovery media for Windows system recovery | It does not contain personal files, so it is not a personal-file backup. |
Copy files to external storage in Windows
An external hard drive or external SSD is a straightforward destination when Windows and File Explorer remain usable. Choose capacity based on the files you need to rescue and the space available on the destination; no particular model is endorsed here.
- Connect the external storage device and wait for it to appear in File Explorer.
- In File Explorer, locate the folders and files you want to preserve. Microsoft’s common-folder list includes Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Favorites, Music, Pictures, and Videos. Check your own folder layout too: files may also be stored in app-specific folders or elsewhere.
- Copy—not move—the highest-priority files to the external device first. If the computer or SSD becomes less responsive, this prioritizes the material you most need.
- Browse the external device and check that the files landed in the right location. Open a selection of important files from the destination if possible.
- Use Windows’ eject option before disconnecting the device.
When Windows Backup or File History makes more sense
Windows Backup and OneDrive
Windows Backup syncs selected folders to OneDrive and requires a Microsoft account. It can be useful if the PC is still usable and cloud syncing can finish, but it is not a complete drive image. Check which folders are selected and whether the sync has completed before relying on it.

File History
File History can use an external drive or a network location. It is a configured backup feature rather than a one-time drag-and-drop copy. For an unstable SSD, do not assume files are protected merely because File History is enabled; confirm the relevant files exist in the backup destination.
Back up a Mac with Time Machine
Use Time Machine with a separate backup disk if the Mac can still access its files. If Time Machine cannot back up, Apple advises checking the destination’s available space, the connection, and whether cloud synchronization is still pending. When Time Machine reports that its backup disk does not have enough space, Apple recommends a disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity; this is Apple’s capacity recommendation in its Time Machine troubleshooting guidance, published June 22, 2026.

For monitored NVM SSDs, Microsoft describes critical warnings involving low spare capacity, degraded reliability, or a drive in a read-only state. Its guidance is direct: “We strongly recommend you pay attention to this message. Back up your data and contact Microsoft support to resolve any additional concerns or issues.” See What to do about a critical warning for a storage device.

When copying does not work
- Files are accessible but copying is slow or intermittently fails: Prioritize the irreplaceable files and copy smaller groups. Avoid making the unstable SSD do unnecessary work before those files have a separate copy.
- The SSD is unreadable, disconnects, or contains uniquely valuable data: Stop repeated DIY recovery attempts and seek qualified help. A successful outcome cannot be promised, and the safest choice depends on the device and symptoms.
- The backup destination fills up: Make space or choose another destination with adequate capacity; do not delete files from the source SSD to make the copy fit.
