To back up Chrome, choose the method that matches what you need to keep: turn on Chrome Sync to make selected data available on devices signed in to your Google Account, export bookmarks or other data to files, or preserve a local Chrome profile before changing computers or reinstalling software. Sync is not documented as a complete offline copy of every profile file.
Choose the right Chrome backup method
| Method | What it covers | Google Account required? | Portable file? | Preserves local-only profile state? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Sync | Selected data saved to your Google Account, depending on sync settings | Yes | No | No |
| Bookmark export | Bookmarks | No | Yes, an HTML file | No |
| Google Account Chrome data export | Selected categories such as bookmarks, history, extensions, and settings; passwords and payment data have separate export locations | Yes | Yes, an archive | No |
| Local profile preservation | Information kept in a specific Chrome profile on that computer | No | Not established by Google’s cited instructions | Yes, if the profile is preserved |
For a familiar setup across devices, use Sync. For a file you can keep or import elsewhere, export bookmarks or use Google’s account data export. If you need to retain local-only information, do not delete the profile; Google’s instructions cited here do not describe profile copying as a complete backup procedure.

Use Chrome Sync for selected data across devices
When you sign in to Chrome and choose to save information to your Google Account, that data is available on other devices signed in to the same account. When signed out, browser information remains on the device. Select what to save in Chrome’s sync settings; history and open tabs can be enabled separately. Sync covers the data you select, not necessarily every local file or detail in a Chrome profile. Google’s Chrome Sync instructions explain the account and settings process.
Export bookmarks as an HTML file
Bookmark export is useful when you want a separate file or plan to import bookmarks into another browser. On a computer:

- Open Chrome and select the menu.
- Choose Bookmarks and lists, then Bookmark Manager.
- In Bookmark Manager, select More, then Export Bookmarks.
- Choose where to save the HTML file and confirm the save.
Menu labels can vary by Chrome version. Google’s bookmark export and import instructions describe the HTML file and how it can be imported into another browser. You can keep the file on the computer or copy it to another location, such as a USB drive; the drive itself does not create a backup.
Export Chrome data from your Google Account
Google’s account data export lets you choose Chrome categories for an archive. Depending on your selections, categories include Autofill, bookmarks, Chrome history, dictionary, extensions, search engines, and settings such as themes and apps. This is a downloadable export, not a live sync connection or a guarantee that every local profile file is included. Start from Google’s instructions for downloading your data.

Export passwords and payment information separately
Saved passwords have a distinct export location in Google Password Manager settings. Payment information is handled through Google Pay or Wallet export. Do not assume that selecting Chrome categories in the general account export also exports these items. Some work or school accounts may be unable to download some data. Google outlines the separate paths in its Chrome data export guidance.

Chrome profiles keep browser information such as bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings separate. Removing a profile erases that profile’s local information from the computer. Before removing a profile or reinstalling Chrome, confirm that anything you need has been synced or exported. Google’s Chrome profile guidance explains what profiles contain and the effect of deleting one.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
The cited Google instructions do not establish that Sync or account export is a complete offline copy of every local profile file. If your goal is to preserve a particular local profile, avoid deleting it until you have confirmed the data you care about is available through another method.
Verify the backup before making changes
- For Sync, check that Chrome is signed in to the intended Google Account and that the categories you need are selected.
- For bookmark export, locate the HTML file in the folder where you saved it and confirm it exists.
- For account export, confirm that the archive has been created and saved where you intended.
- For passwords or payment data, check that you used the separate export path for each.
These checks confirm that settings or files are present; they are not a Google restoration test. Keep exported files somewhere you can access if the original computer is unavailable.

Understand the sync passphrase recovery risk
If you use an optional sync passphrase, keep it somewhere you can retrieve it. Google says that changing the passphrase can remove passphrase-encrypted data from its servers, and that you may be signed out on devices. If you need saved passwords to remain usable, export them before resetting the passphrase. See Google’s Sync guidance and its Chrome sign-in and privacy information for details. Google Help pages were accessed October 7, 2026; interface labels and account controls may change.
