Before switching phones, use Samsung Smart Switch to move data directly to a new Galaxy or make a separate backup on a PC or Mac. Keep the old phone intact until you have checked the new one: Smart Switch does not transfer every app, login, protected file, or account-synced item.
Choose a safe order: back up, transfer, verify, then erase
A phone transfer is a migration, not a guarantee that every detail of your old phone will be reproduced. Smart Switch can move many common items, including photos, contacts, messages and files, but what it can transfer depends on the devices and the content involved. Some app data and logins, secure or encrypted data, and DRM-protected content may not transfer. Data synchronized with an online account may appear only after you add that account to the new phone.

The safest sequence is to prepare both devices, make a separate backup if you want a fallback copy, run the transfer, and then check important content and apps on the new phone. Do not factory-reset, trade in, or otherwise give up the old phone until those checks are complete. That is a practical precaution, not a guarantee that any particular item will transfer.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Decide which transfer method fits
| Method | Best for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless Smart Switch | Moving data directly when both phones are available and you do not need a computer backup. | Both devices need to connect for the transfer. Time depends on the amount of data and the connection; there is no reliable universal duration. |
| USB cable | A direct wired transfer, or connecting a phone to a computer. | Device and cable compatibility matter. For a PC or Mac backup, Samsung specifies a cable that supports data transfer, not just charging. |
| PC or Mac backup and restore | Keeping a separate local copy before setting up the new Galaxy. | Requires a compatible computer, Smart Switch, available computer storage, and a data-capable cable. |
| SD card or USB storage | Using external storage when the phone supports the relevant option. | Confirm that the phone supports the storage type and connector before relying on it or buying anything. |
Samsung documents wireless, USB, computer, and external-storage options, but availability depends on the source and destination devices. You can also use Samsung Cloud or a Google account for certain backups; the options and steps depend on the phone’s operating system.
Prepare both phones before moving anything
A few checks reduce the chance of getting stuck midway or discovering too late that you cannot access an account or an app. Do these before starting a transfer or backup.
- Charge both devices. Keep them powered while Smart Switch is working.
- Check free space on the new phone. Make sure it has room for the content you intend to move.
- Have the old phone’s unlock method ready. You may need to unlock it or approve a connection.
- Keep account credentials and recovery details available. Some content may return only after you sign in to the relevant account on the new device.
- Identify apps that need their own migration or backup process. Do not assume that app settings, secure data, or chats will be included in a general phone transfer.
- Update Smart Switch where appropriate. Samsung’s overview lists support for Android and iOS source devices, but the available options still depend on the connected devices.
- Leave the old phone untouched after the copy begins. Do not erase it as part of setup or trade-in preparation before you have checked the result.
Option 1: Transfer wirelessly from the old phone to a new Galaxy
A wireless transfer is useful when both phones are on hand and you want to move content directly without first making a computer backup. Samsung’s guidance describes connecting the phones through Smart Switch, approving the connection on the old device, choosing content, and starting the transfer.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open or install Smart Switch on both phones, following the options available on each device.
- Place the phones near each other and begin the phone-to-phone transfer in Smart Switch.
- When prompted, allow or approve the connection on the old phone. Unlock it if needed.
- Review the content categories Smart Switch offers and select what you want to move.
- Start the transfer and leave the phones available until it finishes.
- On the new phone, check the important items you selected before changing or erasing the old phone.
Wireless transfer time depends on the quantity of data and the connection. Do not plan around a promised number of minutes: the cited Samsung instructions do not establish a standard duration. If the connection cannot be established or remains unreliable, consider a compatible cable or a computer backup instead.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Option 2: Transfer with a USB cable
A wired connection is another documented way to move content to a Galaxy. Samsung’s US transfer instructions cover cable transfer and external-storage options; supported content can vary with the connected device. The exact prompts can therefore differ.
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy that will receive the data.
- Connect the old phone using a compatible cable and follow the on-screen connection prompts.
- Unlock the old phone and approve access or the connection if asked.
- Choose the items Smart Switch makes available for transfer, then start the copy.
- Wait for the transfer to finish and inspect the new phone for the content you need.
For computer backups, make sure the cable supports data transfer. A cable that only charges a phone will not meet that requirement. Compatibility depends on the devices and ports; the Samsung instructions do not establish that one cable type works with every phone.
Option 3: Make a PC or Mac backup, then restore it
A desktop backup gives you a separate local copy to restore from, rather than relying only on a direct phone-to-phone transfer. Samsung’s UK support article, updated June 19, 2026, documents backing up through the Smart Switch desktop app and restoring to a new phone. It also says backup items can be selected in the app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Install Smart Switch on the PC or Mac.
- Connect the old phone to the computer with a cable that supports data transfer.
- Unlock the phone and allow the connection or access prompt on the phone.
- In the desktop Smart Switch app, select Backup.
- If the app offers a choice of items, review the selection and choose what you want included.
- Let the backup finish before disconnecting the phone. Keep the old phone until you have confirmed the new device is usable.
Restore to the new Galaxy
- Connect the new Galaxy to the computer running Smart Switch.
- Select Restore in the desktop app.
- If prompted, select the backup you want to use.
- Confirm the restore and allow it to complete.
- Check the new phone for essential content and app access before erasing the old device.
A computer backup is a fallback, not proof that every item has been captured. Samsung’s transfer guidance lists exclusions that apply to some data and apps, so review the outcome on the new phone and separately handle anything Smart Switch does not cover.

Option 4: Use external storage where supported
Samsung documents backup to an SD card and transfer using external storage, including a USB flash drive, where supported. This can be useful if you prefer a storage-based route, but it is not available in the same way on every device.
- Check that the old and destination devices support the relevant storage option.
- Confirm the storage type and connector are compatible with the phone before relying on them.
- Follow the Smart Switch options shown on the specific device to back up or transfer.
- After moving the data, inspect the destination phone before treating the external copy as your only remaining copy.
Do not buy an SD card or flash drive on the assumption that it will work with both phones. Samsung’s instructions establish the existence of these paths where supported, not universal compatibility.
What may not transfer—and what to do about it
Samsung’s Smart Switch content and backup guidance warns that some data does not move through the standard transfer or computer-backup workflows. Which exclusions matter depends on the specific app, platform, and transfer route.
- Secure or encrypted app data: Some protected data may not transfer. Samsung’s UK PC/Mac guidance specifically says secure or encrypted data, including WhatsApp chats, does not transfer through that backup workflow. Messaging-app procedures can change, so use the app’s own current official instructions for moving chats rather than assuming a general Smart Switch transfer covers them.
- DRM-protected content: Samsung says DRM content cannot be transferred through Smart Switch. You may need to access eligible content through the service or account that provided it rather than copying it as a file.
- Some app data and logins: Samsung warns that not all app data or sign-in details transfer. Be ready to sign in again and check critical apps individually.
- Apps without a destination-platform equivalent: App availability differs between Google Play and Apple’s App Store. A transfer cannot install an app that is not available for the destination platform.
- Account-synced content: Samsung notes that data synchronized with an account may not move through Smart Switch but can appear after you add that account to the new phone. Check the relevant account and sync settings if something expected is missing.
For important information inside an app, check that app’s current backup or migration instructions before you begin. This is particularly important for messaging, authentication, finance, and other apps where losing local data or access could have consequences. The available Samsung material does not establish a single workaround that applies to every app.

Verify the new phone before wiping the old one
Do not judge a transfer only by whether Smart Switch reports that it has finished. Check the content and access you rely on directly on the new phone. This checklist is a risk-reduction workflow; Samsung does not guarantee a particular result for every device or item.
- Contacts: Check that important people are present and that account-synced contacts appear after you add the relevant account.
- Photos and files: Open a selection of important images and documents, including any that you need for work or travel.
- Messages: Check that the messages you expected are available. Handle app-specific chat migration separately where needed.
- Critical apps: Open them, sign in, and verify that the information you depend on is present.
- Account access: Confirm that you can sign in to the accounts needed to use the phone and retrieve synced content.
- Anything not selected: Compare your Smart Switch selections with the items you intended to move; an item that was not selected should not be assumed to have transferred.
If something is missing, keep the old phone. Check whether the item is account-synced, excluded from the transfer, or handled by an app-specific procedure. You can then retry an appropriate transfer or follow the relevant account or app instructions while the source device is still available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to erase or trade in the old phone
Erase the old phone only after the new one has passed your checks, you can access essential accounts, and you have dealt with app data that does not move through Smart Switch. Then use the factory-reset and trade-in steps appropriate to the device and the arrangement with your carrier, retailer, or recipient. Samsung’s cited transfer and backup pages explain transfer limitations but do not prescribe a universal trade-in checklist, so follow the instructions for your particular phone and handoff.

Compatibility and regional differences
Samsung’s UK Smart Switch overview, updated October 8, 2026, lists minimum platform versions of Android 4.3 and iOS 4.2.1 or later. Those are the minimums stated on that page, not a promise that every device running those versions can use every transfer feature. Check Samsung’s current compatibility information for the phones involved.

Samsung’s US transfer guide says Smart Switch transfers content to Galaxy devices and does not transfer content to an iOS destination. The overview also describes Android and iOS devices as possible source devices. In practical terms, do not infer from source-device support that Smart Switch can restore data to any kind of destination: confirm that the destination and route are supported.
Menu names, backup availability, and supported content can differ by device, OS version, and country. The UK, US, and Caribbean Samsung support articles describe their respective contexts; if your screen or options do not match a step here, consult the instructions for your region and exact device rather than assuming the feature is missing or that another region’s path applies.
Common problems and sensible next steps
The computer does not recognize the phone
For the PC or Mac backup workflow, first confirm that the cable supports data transfer, then unlock the phone and allow the connection on its screen. If a connection still cannot be made, check the device-specific Smart Switch guidance and try a supported transfer route instead. Samsung’s instructions do not establish that every cable or computer setup is compatible.
The transfer is taking longer than expected
There is no universal time estimate in Samsung’s guidance. Wireless transfer time depends on the amount of data and the connection. Keep both phones available and connected while the transfer runs; if the connection is unstable, a compatible wired method may be more suitable.
An item or app is missing
First check whether it was selected and whether it is the kind of content Smart Switch supports. Protected data, some app data, DRM content, and account-synced items have different limitations. Add the relevant account, check the app’s own migration instructions, or retain the old phone while you determine the right route.
The destination phone does not offer the option you expected
Available transfer and backup methods vary by device and software version. Check the current Samsung compatibility information and the support instructions for your region and model. External storage in particular is documented only where the device supports it.
