How to Back Up and Restore Your Samsung Galaxy Home Screen Layout

Use Samsung Cloud to restore a Galaxy home-screen layout after a reset, or Smart Switch to move it to another Galaxy. Follow the exact menu paths, verify Home screen or Home layout is included, and fix One UI 7 grid changes or missing items.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Samsung Cloud to save and restore a Galaxy home-screen layout, or use Smart Switch when moving the layout to another Galaxy phone. Cloud restore is the straightforward choice after a reset; Smart Switch is usually the better choice for a Galaxy-to-Galaxy move. The options and results depend on your Galaxy model, One UI version, country and carrier, so confirm that Home screen or Home layout appears on your phone before you rely on the backup.

What Samsung can save

Samsung’s Cloud backup category includes the home-screen arrangement and some related settings. Samsung describes the category as “Home screen: layout, wallpapers (excluding default wallpapers) and Samsung DeX settings.” That means the backup can include the positions of home-screen pages, app shortcuts, folders and eligible wallpapers, but Samsung does not promise every home-screen element on every Galaxy model or software release.

Method Best use What Samsung identifies as transferable Important limits
Samsung Cloud Restoring the same phone after a factory reset, or restoring a saved backup while setting up another Galaxy Home-screen layout, eligible wallpapers and Samsung DeX settings Available items vary by model, operating system, country and carrier. Default wallpapers are excluded, and files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud.
Smart Switch Moving from one Galaxy device to another “Home layout” between Galaxy devices, along with other selected data Transfer scope depends on the source and destination software and manufacturer. A One UI 7 grid can change during an update or restore.

Neither workflow requires a purchased physical product for the documented wireless and Cloud paths. Smart Switch can also use a USB cable or a computer, but those are optional transfer routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the right method before you start

  • Same phone after a reset: Make a Samsung Cloud backup first, then use Restore data after the reset.
  • Old Galaxy to new Galaxy: Use Smart Switch, selecting the old phone as the sender and the new phone as the receiver. Samsung Cloud is an alternative if a suitable Cloud backup already exists.
  • Cloud backup does not show Home screen: Do not assume the layout is included. Check the backup items offered on that device and use Smart Switch or a manual rebuild if necessary.
  • One UI 7 is involved: Check the supported grid sizes after transfer. One UI 7 supports only 4×6 and 5×6 home-screen grids.

Before erasing the old phone, open the relevant backup or transfer screen and verify that the home-screen item is actually listed. This single check prevents treating a general phone backup as proof that the layout was saved.

Back up the home screen with Samsung Cloud

Prepare the phone

  • Connect the Galaxy to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
  • Sign in to the Samsung account used for the backup.
  • Keep the phone charged. Samsung says automatic Cloud backup requires the device to be charging, the screen to be off and Wi-Fi to be connected.
  • Check that Samsung Cloud offers a Home screen item. Labels and available categories can differ by model and One UI release.

Run an immediate backup

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts and backup.
  3. Under Samsung Cloud, tap Back up data.
  4. Select Home screen if it is offered. Select other categories only if you also want them saved.
  5. Tap Back up now.
  6. Wait for the operation to finish, then tap Done if that button appears.

Do not turn off the phone or leave the backup screen assuming it completed. Confirm the finished status and, when possible, reopen the backup item list to make sure Home screen remains selected. Samsung Cloud support and the categories shown can vary by country and mobile carrier, so the list on your phone is the authoritative check.

What the Cloud backup does not guarantee

Samsung excludes default wallpapers from the stated wallpaper category. The Cloud service also cannot back up files larger than 1 GB; that limit normally concerns other backup content rather than a small layout description, but it is still a restriction on the service as a whole. More importantly, a model or software version may expose fewer backup categories than another Galaxy. If Home screen is absent, there is no evidence from that screen that the layout was saved.

Restore the layout from Samsung Cloud

Restore on the existing phone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts and backup.
  3. Under Samsung Cloud, tap Restore data.
  4. Select the phone backup you want to use. Check its date and device description so you do not choose an older backup.
  5. Select Home screen, plus any other categories you deliberately want to restore.
  6. Tap Restore and wait for the process to finish.
  7. Tap Done when shown, then return to the Home screen and inspect every page.

Samsung documents Cloud restore for use after a factory reset and during setup of a new Galaxy. The exact choices can change with the device and software, so follow the categories displayed rather than expecting every phone to show the same list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the result before deleting the old backup

  • Swipe through all home-screen pages and confirm the expected page is set as the main screen.
  • Open folders to check that their shortcuts are present.
  • Check wallpaper and widgets separately. A default Samsung wallpaper may not return because default wallpapers are excluded from the Cloud category.
  • Open frequently used apps to ensure the shortcuts point to apps that are installed on the restored phone.

A Cloud restore can reproduce the saved arrangement, but it is not a guarantee that every visual element will be identical across different models or One UI versions. Keep the source backup until you have checked the restored phone.

Transfer the home layout with Smart Switch

Smart Switch is Samsung’s device-to-device transfer utility. Samsung lists Home layout (Galaxy devices only) among data that can be transferred from Android devices. It supports wireless transfer, a USB connection and computer-based backup and restore. The names of buttons can vary by software version; use the labels shown on the two phones.

Wireless Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfer

  1. On the new Galaxy, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Transfer data for device setup. On some software versions, open Smart Switch from the same Accounts and backup area instead.
  2. On the new phone, choose Receive on this phone.
  3. Choose the old phone’s platform when prompted, then select Wireless.
  4. On the old Galaxy, open the corresponding transfer screen and choose Send from this phone.
  5. Approve the connection request shown on the phones.
  6. When the data list appears, select Home layout and any other categories you intend to move.
  7. Start the transfer and leave both phones nearby and sufficiently charged until Smart Switch reports completion.
  8. On the new phone, open the Home screen and check the pages, folders, shortcuts and widgets that were available for transfer.

The home-layout entry is specifically identified for Galaxy devices. Samsung warns that some transferred items depend on the device manufacturer and operating-system version, so a transfer from a non-Galaxy Android phone may not provide the same result as a Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfer.

USB transfer

A wired Smart Switch transfer follows the same sender-and-receiver logic. Connect the phones with a compatible USB data connection, select Receive on this phone on the new Galaxy and Send from this phone on the old one, then select Home layout in the data list. If the phones do not recognize one another, unlock both displays, reconnect the cable and accept any USB or Smart Switch permission prompt. The exact cable and adapter requirements depend on the ports on the two phones; Samsung’s transfer screen will indicate when a connection is ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Computer or SD-card backup

Smart Switch can also back up a phone to a computer or an SD card and restore that backup to a Galaxy. Use the Smart Switch application on the computer, create the backup from the old phone, connect the destination Galaxy, choose the restore function and include the home-layout category if it is offered. This route is useful when the phones cannot remain connected wirelessly, but the available categories still depend on the source and destination software.

One UI 7: the grid can change after transfer

Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance contains a specific limitation: “In One UI 7, only 4×6 and 5×6 Home screen grids are supported.” If the old phone used another grid and Smart Switch updates or restores the destination phone, the new phone can select a supported grid and leave empty spaces. This is a One UI 7 behavior, not a universal rule for every Galaxy version.

Correct an empty or differently spaced grid

  1. Switch the phone to portrait orientation.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Home screen grid.
  5. Choose 4×6 or 5×6.
  6. Tap Done, then move shortcuts or widgets into the available spaces as needed.

One UI 7 also prevents home-screen editing while the Home screen is in landscape mode. In landscape, icons and widgets cannot be moved, added, deleted or edited. Rotate to portrait before trying to repair the arrangement.

What to do when the restore is incomplete

The Home screen option is missing in Samsung Cloud

Return to Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data and inspect the categories. If Home screen is not listed, check for a software update and confirm that the correct Samsung account is signed in, but do not assume an update will make the category appear. Samsung states that Cloud support varies by model, operating system, country and carrier. Use Smart Switch for a Galaxy-to-Galaxy move, or plan a manual rebuild.

The Cloud backup will not finish

  • Connect to Wi-Fi rather than relying on mobile data.
  • Plug in the phone and turn the screen off, which matches Samsung’s conditions for automatic backup.
  • Retry from Back up data and watch for an error message.
  • Check that the Samsung account has access to Cloud and that the phone has enough local storage to complete the operation.

The last item is a practical device check; Samsung’s documented Cloud restriction is that files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up. If the phone reports a category-specific problem, follow that message instead of repeatedly starting the same backup.

The Smart Switch transfer finishes but the layout is different

First check whether the destination is running One UI 7 and whether its grid is 4×6 or 5×6. Then verify that the transfer included Home layout, not only contacts, photos or applications. A change of Galaxy model, screen size, launcher settings or operating-system version can also alter which layout controls are available. Samsung’s documentation does not promise an identical arrangement across every combination of devices.

Widgets or shortcuts are absent

Confirm that the related app is installed on the destination phone and that you are looking at every restored home-screen page. If a widget is still missing, add it manually from the Home-screen widget picker. A shortcut can be recreated by opening the app drawer, touching and holding the app icon and placing it on the desired page. The restored layout is a starting point; the controls exposed by the destination model determine what can be added back.

The phone was reset before a backup was made

Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Restore data and look for an earlier phone backup. If no backup contains Home screen, Samsung’s documented Cloud workflow cannot recreate the prior arrangement. Rebuild it manually using the organization controls below.

Manually rebuild a Galaxy home screen

Manual reconstruction is the fallback when no usable Cloud or Smart Switch copy exists. Samsung notes that available screens and organization settings vary by model, software version and wireless provider.

Add or remove pages

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen to open the Home-screen overview.
  2. Swipe to the end of the page strip and tap the + tile to add a page, if that control is shown.
  3. To remove an unwanted page, open the same overview and use the page’s delete control.

Set the main page and reorder screens

  1. In the Home-screen overview, identify the page you want as the first page.
  2. Use the home icon or the equivalent Set as main control shown above that page.
  3. Touch and hold a page thumbnail, then drag it left or right to change the order.

Place shortcuts and create folders

  1. Open the app drawer.
  2. Touch and hold an app icon, then drag it to the target Home-screen page.
  3. Drag one shortcut on top of another to create a folder.
  4. Open the folder and edit its name if the option is available.
  5. Drag additional shortcuts into the folder, or move them out to the page.

Add widgets

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Choose an app and widget style.
  4. Touch and hold the widget, drag it to an open area and release it.
  5. Resize or configure it if the widget provides those controls.

Use portrait orientation while making these changes on One UI 7. If the grid does not leave enough room, adjust it first through Settings > Home screen grid.

A safer workflow before resetting or replacing a Galaxy

  1. Record the current One UI version and home-screen grid, especially if either phone uses One UI 7.
  2. Run Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data and confirm that Home screen is listed and selected.
  3. If moving to another Galaxy, perform a Smart Switch transfer while the old phone still works. Select Home layout explicitly.
  4. Complete setup or restoration on the destination phone before wiping the source phone.
  5. Check every page, folder, shortcut, wallpaper and widget. Repair omissions manually while the old layout is still available for reference.
  6. Only after verification should you factory-reset, trade in or give away the old phone.

This sequence uses Cloud for recoverability and Smart Switch for a direct Galaxy-to-Galaxy move without treating either service as a guarantee of pixel-for-pixel identity across different software versions.

Bottom line: Cloud for recovery, Smart Switch for migration

Samsung Cloud is the supported path for restoring a saved home-screen layout after a reset, provided the backup actually includes Home screen. Smart Switch is the supported path for moving Home layout from one Galaxy device to another over wireless, USB or a computer. Check the categories offered on your devices, account for country and carrier differences, and pay special attention to One UI 7’s 4×6 and 5×6 grid restriction. If the restored arrangement is incomplete, Samsung’s Home-screen controls let you add pages, set the main page, reorder screens, recreate folders and place widgets manually.
