To back up a Windows registry key before changing it, select that key in Registry Editor and choose File > Export. To put the exported data back, use File > Import. This is a targeted backup of the selected key and its contents—not a complete backup of Windows—so make sure you export the exact key you plan to edit. Microsoft warns that direct registry changes can damage a system and advises backing up first when editing is necessary. Microsoft’s registry command documentation explains the risk and the scope of registry export and import operations.
Before you edit: understand what a registry export protects
A Registry Editor export preserves the selected key or subkey and the registry entries and values it contains. It is useful for protecting a specific area you are about to change, but it is not a full registry image, a Windows system backup, or a guarantee that unrelated changes can be undone.

Microsoft cautions: “The registry editor bypasses standard safeguards, allowing settings that can degrade performance, damage your system, or even require you to reinstall Windows.” Its guidance is: “If you must edit the registry directly, back it up first.” Microsoft Learn: reg commands.
How to export a registry key before changing it
- Open Start, type
regedit.exe, and press Enter. If Windows displays an administrator prompt, approve it to continue. - In Registry Editor, navigate to the key or subkey you intend to change and select it. Carefully check the path; exporting the wrong key will not protect the one you plan to edit.
- Choose File > Export.
- In the export dialog, choose a destination and enter a descriptive filename. Including the key name and date can make the file easier to identify later.
- Save the file and keep it somewhere you can find if you need it. A separate or removable drive is an optional destination, not a requirement.

- Open Registry Editor. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows requests it.

- Browse to the registry export file you saved, select it, and choose Open.
Importing applies the registry content in that file. It does not roll back every registry change, restore a complete Windows installation, or reverse changes outside the exported data. If you need broader recovery after a recent system change, consider System Restore or a suitable system backup instead.
Choose the recovery method that matches the scope
| Method | Scope | File or recovery point | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registry Editor export/import | Selected key or subkey and its exported entries and values | Registry export file | A targeted change to a known key |
reg save / reg restore |
Saved registry subkeys and entries | .hiv file created in advance with reg save |
A distinct command-line save-and-restore workflow; it is not the same as importing a Registry Editor export |
| System Restore | System files, registry settings, and installed programs returned to their state at a selected restore point; personal files are not affected, according to Microsoft | A selected restore point | Broader recovery from a recent program installation, driver update, or system setting change |
Microsoft documents reg export and reg import as operations on specified registry content. The separate reg restore command writes saved subkeys and entries back from a .hiv file created with reg save. Microsoft Learn: reg restore. For broader recovery, Microsoft Support’s Windows backup, restore, and recovery guide describes System Restore and its scope.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. That support change is separate from whether the Registry Editor export/import procedure works. Microsoft Support’s registry instructions and Windows 10 support notice.
