SQL Server on Azure Local runs inside a Windows Server or Linux virtual machine. For a database-level backup you can move off-site, use SQL Server’s native backup and restore tools with Azure Blob Storage; for broader VM protection, Microsoft also points to Azure Backup Server. Choose and test the recovery path that fits your workload—high availability alone is not a backup.
Choose the recovery layer before configuring backups
Azure Local hosts SQL Server in a VM, so protection can operate at two different layers. A SQL-aware backup protects databases and their backup chains; VM protection captures the virtual machine. Microsoft’s Azure Local Version 23H2 deployment guidance identifies SQL Server managed backup to Azure Blob Storage and Azure Backup Server for on-premises SQL data and Azure Local VM protection as approaches. The right design depends on recovery objectives, SQL Server release, and the organization’s existing operations; the guidance does not prescribe a universal choice.

| Approach | What it protects | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| SQL Server native backup to Azure Blob Storage | Database-level backups, including full, differential, and transaction-log backups as configured | Requires SQL Server-to-storage authentication, supported version and authentication method, and management of the required backup chain. |
| Azure Backup Server / Azure Local VM protection | VM protection, with SQL data protection capabilities depending on configuration | Consider if the organization operates Azure Backup Server. Verify current compatibility and setup for the specific Azure Local and SQL Server releases before deployment; detailed setup steps are not established here. |
| Combination | Database-level recovery alongside VM-level protection | Can address different recovery needs, but adds operational complexity. Define which method is authoritative for each recovery scenario. |
Record the recovery point objective (how much data loss is tolerable) and recovery time objective (how quickly service must return), then choose backup frequency and restore destinations accordingly. Neither the Microsoft guidance cited here nor this article sets those targets for your workload.

Check SQL Server version, permissions, and storage access
- Confirm the exact releases. Microsoft’s Azure Local deployment page is labeled Version 23H2; verify your Azure Local and SQL Server releases before applying deployment or support guidance.
- Check the Blob backup method against SQL Server version. Microsoft says backup to Azure Blob Storage support began with SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU2. The documented SAS-based quickstart method applies to SQL Server 2016 and later; SQL Server 2014 and earlier do not support that SAS method. Do not assume the quickstart authentication procedure applies to every release or storage policy.
- Confirm access and permissions. The account issuing BACKUP or RESTORE needs the required SQL Server permissions, and SQL Server must authenticate to the storage account—even if the container is public. Protect storage secrets and make them available to the SQL Server service under your deployment’s security policy.
See Microsoft’s SQL backup and restore to Azure Blob Storage quickstart for the version-specific SAS procedure.

Configure Blob Storage and take database backups
- Select or create an Azure storage account and container. Use a storage location and access policy that meet your organization’s off-site resilience and security requirements.
- Configure SQL Server’s storage authentication. Set up the credential expected by the SQL Server version and chosen authentication method. Keep secrets protected and accessible to the SQL Server service.
- Run a backup using SSMS or T-SQL. Microsoft’s quickstart covers both routes. Select full, differential, and transaction-log backups as appropriate for your target recovery points; there is no single schedule that fits every workload.
- Document the backup chain and destination. Record the database, backup type, storage URL, authentication method, and sequence needed to restore. Confirm that the resulting backup is available in the intended container.
For the documented procedure, follow the Microsoft Blob Storage quickstart. Its authentication instructions are not a substitute for checking your SQL Server release and storage policy.
Restore a database from Blob Storage
Restore from SSMS using Device > URL, or issue a T-SQL RESTORE DATABASE command that reads from the Blob URL. The SQL Server instance performing the restore must be able to authenticate to the storage location. Restore the needed backup sets in chain order; when applying successive sets, leave the database in the appropriate non-recovered state until the final set when required.

The following is an illustrative full restore with file relocation. Replace the database name, Blob URL, logical file names, and paths with values from your environment. It does not constitute a complete point-in-time restore script or an Azure Local-specific tested procedure.
RESTORE DATABASE Sales
FROM URL = 'https://storageaccount.blob.core.windows.net/backups/Sales.bak'
WITH MOVE 'Sales_Data' TO 'D:SQLDataSales.mdf',
MOVE 'Sales_log' TO 'E:SQLLogsSales_log.ldf',
STATS = 10;
MOVE maps the backup’s logical data and log files to valid paths on the restore target when the original file locations are not suitable. Check the SQL Server RESTORE (Transact-SQL) reference for syntax and options.

Do not treat Azure VM restore instructions as Azure Local steps
Microsoft’s SQL Server on Azure VMs restore guide is explicitly for Azure VMs, not Azure Local VMs. Its portal workflow should not be copied into an Azure Local procedure without separate confirmation. The article discusses point-in-time restore in relation to log backups and full or bulk-logged recovery mode, but that does not establish an Azure Local restore workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate recovery, not just backup completion
A successful backup job does not by itself prove that a usable database can be recovered. Schedule test restores to an alternate VM or isolated SQL Server instance. After each test, check database integrity and application behavior, and record elapsed restore time against your recovery objectives. Adjust the backup design if the tested outcome does not meet those objectives.

High availability and backups address different failure cases. Azure Local failover clustering, SQL Server availability groups, and failover cluster instances can help maintain availability under some failures, but they do not replace independent backups that have been tested through restoration. Microsoft’s Azure Local SQL Server deployment guidance describes the deployment context.
