To back up a marimo project, save the notebook’s .py file together with the configuration, local code, data, and other files it needs. Then keep a separate copy and test restoring it. The right method depends on where the notebook runs: a local project, marimohub workspace, or the documented Kubernetes plugin workflow.
What to include in a marimo backup
marimo describes each notebook as “pure Python (Git-friendly), executable as a script, and deployable as an app.” Start with the notebook’s .py file, but do not assume it contains the entire project. A notebook may rely on shared dependencies, local modules, data files, or other inputs stored alongside it. See marimo’s official documentation and guide to working in projects.

- Notebook source: the relevant
.pyfile or files. - Project configuration and dependencies: for example, a
pyproject.tomlthat declares requirements shared by notebooks. - Supporting code: local modules and scripts imported by the notebook.
- Required inputs: datasets and other project files the code reads.
- External dependencies: note any remote data, services, or credentials the project expects. A file copy does not itself preserve access to those resources.
Inspect the actual project directory and notebook imports to determine what belongs in the backup. Keep at least one separate copy of the project and periodically test recovery from it. A second copy on separate physical media, such as an external drive, is an optional way to reduce reliance on one machine; it is not a marimo requirement and does not by itself provide off-site protection.
Choose a backup method for your setup
Compare methods by what they capture, where the copy lives, how you would restore it, and who can access it. Version control can preserve tracked source and configuration, but does not automatically capture untracked runtime files, local datasets, or remote resources.

| Method | What it captures | How restoration works | Important scope limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local project copy | The files you include, such as notebook source, configuration, supporting code, and data. | Copy the saved project files back, then verify the environment and notebook. | Only includes what you copied; remote services and data are not included. |
| Git-friendly source control | Files you add and commit, commonly notebook source and project configuration. | Check out or restore a saved revision, then restore any required files not tracked there. | Does not automatically cover every runtime file, dataset, or external resource. |
| marimohub workspace persistence | Depends on the configured persistence mode; workspace mode captures working-directory files at teardown. | Use the platform’s configured persistence behavior; version history can restore an earlier saved version. | Platform-specific storage is not an independent external backup. Workspace contents may be readable by project members with read access. |
| Documented Kubernetes plugin sync | Changes synced back to the local file through the documented kubectl-marimo workflow. |
Run the documented sync workflow before removing the deployment. | Applies to this plugin workflow, not every Kubernetes storage arrangement. |
Jupyter .ipynb export |
A notebook representation converted to Jupyter format. | Convert back to a marimo notebook or open it in a compatible Jupyter environment. | Not a full project backup: it does not establish that project files, dependencies, data, or external resources were captured. |
How to back up a local marimo project
- Locate the project directory and identify its notebook
.pyfiles. - Check project configuration, such as
pyproject.toml, for dependency declarations shared across notebooks. - Identify local imports, data files, and other inputs that the notebook needs. Record external services or remote data separately, since copying files cannot preserve their availability.
- Copy the required project files to a separate destination or add the intended files to version control. Confirm that the copy includes the files identified in the inventory.
- Test from the copy: set up the dependencies, resolve the project’s data paths, and run the notebook. Treat a successful test in your environment as the evidence that this backup is usable.
Does exporting to .ipynb back up data?
No. marimo documents editor and command-line export to .ipynb, as well as conversion back to a marimo notebook, in its Jupyter notebook guide. This is a notebook-format conversion for interoperability, not evidence that the project’s dependencies, datasets, credentials, or external data sources were included. Keep those project requirements and files separately, and test the converted notebook in its intended environment.
WebAssembly HTML exports have a documented way to include local data files: put them in a public/ directory beside the notebook. marimo says the export copies that directory into the output. Data or assets fetched remotely by notebook code or widgets still need suitable local alternatives or must remain available remotely. See the WebAssembly notebooks guide.

Back up and restore marimohub workspace data
marimohub documents two persistence choices with different scopes. In source mode, it preserves source files such as notebook.py and pyproject.toml. In workspace mode, it additionally captures runtime working-directory files at teardown and restores them in later sessions. The captured workspace may include hidden files; project members with read access can read captured files. Consider that access when deciding whether to keep sensitive material in the workspace. See the marimohub documentation.

These are marimohub-specific features; they should not be assumed to exist in every local marimo installation. Platform persistence and version history are useful recovery mechanisms, but do not alone establish that an independent backup exists.

Sync changes before removing a Kubernetes deployment
For the documented kubectl-marimo workflow, the Kubernetes guide says changes sync back to the local file when the command is stopped and documents kubectl marimo sync. It also warns that directly running kubectl delete does not sync changes. If your recovery plan depends on the local synced files, follow the guide’s sync workflow before deleting the deployment. This guidance is specific to the documented plugin, not all Kubernetes storage setups. See marimo’s Kubernetes guide.
Restore a backup and verify it
Restore to a copy or separate directory first, rather than overwriting the only remaining version. Then check the project in the environment where you intend to use it:

- Confirm the expected notebook and project files are present.
- Install or recreate dependencies from the project’s declarations.
- Check that required local data paths resolve and inputs are readable.
- Run the notebook and verify that it executes with the expected inputs.
- Check any required remote services or data sources separately.
These checks are practical recovery advice, not a guarantee from marimo that any particular backup method will restore every project successfully.
