Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe safest approach is to make a complete, unmodified copy of your GTA V installation, separately preserve saves and settings, and then install supported archive edits through OpenIV’s mods folder. If a mod breaks the game, remove it using its own instructions, restore files from a backup that matches the installed game build, or use your launcher’s verification tool to repair the current files. Do not mix archives from an older game version with a newer installation.
What a GTA V backup protects
A mod can replace archives, add loose files, install plug-ins, or change configuration data. A launcher repair can restore files that the platform owns, but it is not a record of every mod you installed and it does not replace a separate copy of your personal data. A reliable rollback plan therefore has several parts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A clean installation copy: the entire GTA V directory before any modification.
- User data: saved games, profiles, settings and recordings that may be stored outside the installation folder.
- Mod packages and notes: the downloaded archives, versions and installation changes needed to remove or reinstall a mod set.
Keeping these items separate lets you repair the game without accidentally deleting saves or losing the exact files needed to reproduce a working setup.

A manual copy is the broadest fallback because it captures the files that are actually present in the installation directory, including files a launcher may not classify as official. It is also easy to label with a date and game build. Steam’s dedicated backup feature is useful for supported Steam installations, but Steam states that the game must be completely downloaded, installed and patched through Steam. Do not assume that feature works the same way for a Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Launcher installation, or for a mixed installation moved between libraries.

A launcher backup or cloud copy can be convenient, but it should not replace a separately stored copy of profiles, settings, recordings and mod archives. If you use an optional portable external SSD, keep it disconnected or otherwise protected while experimenting so a mistake cannot overwrite both the working copy and the backup. The destination may be another internal drive, an external drive or another safe storage location; it should not be a subfolder of GTA V itself.
Before installing anything
Start from an unmodded, closed game
Launch GTA V once in its unmodified state if necessary, then exit Story Mode, the launcher and any mod-management utilities. A file that is open while you copy it can produce an incomplete or inconsistent backup. Wait until the launcher has finished any update before taking the snapshot.
Find the actual installation folder
Do not assume a universal default path. Open the library or installed-games settings in the launcher you use and choose the option that opens or displays GTA V’s installation location. Steam, Epic Games Launcher and Rockstar Games Launcher can use different libraries, drive letters and folder names. Record the path in your backup notes.
Check free space and choose a destination
A full directory copy needs roughly as much free space as the installed game, plus room for future versions. Copy it to a different folder with a clear name such as GTA-V-clean-2026-10-16 and include the game build or update number when you know it. A separate internal partition is useful, while a portable external SSD is optional; the important requirement is that the copy is not inside the folder you will modify. Steam’s backup guidance also allows completed backup files to be moved to another location.
Preserve user data separately
Save files and profile data are not guaranteed to be inside the game directory. Community backup guidance identifies paths under DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles..., while Rockstar’s clean-install instructions distinguish user-data locations from the installation folder. Copy the relevant profile folders, settings and recorded videos to your backup location. If you use cloud synchronization, keep a local copy as well so a bad or overwritten save is not your only version.
Preserve the original folder structure when possible. That makes it easier to put files back in the location expected by the game after a reinstall. Do not assume that copying only one save file captures all profile information; retain the complete relevant profile directory and any settings or recordings you want to keep. Check that the copied files can be opened or browsed from the backup location before you begin mod installation.
Archive the mod set
Keep the original downloaded mod archives, readme files and installation notes outside the game directory. Record which files were added, replaced or edited and the date each mod was installed. This is especially important for loose files and plug-ins that a simple folder deletion cannot identify. Save the exact mod version alongside its archive because an author may later update a download without preserving the older file layout.
Make a complete clean copy
- Close GTA V, its launcher and mod tools.
- Open the launcher’s installed-game settings and confirm the current GTA V directory.
- Verify that the game is fully updated before copying. Note the version or update date in a text file next to the backup.
- Create a destination folder on another drive or in a separate storage location with enough free space.
- Copy the entire GTA V installation directory, including all subfolders and files. Do not copy only the executable or a few archives; a missing dependency can prevent a launch.
- After the copy completes, compare the source and destination folder sizes and check that the destination contains the main executable and the expected archive and update folders.
- Copy your profile, saves, settings and recordings separately, retaining their original folder structure.
- Place downloaded mod archives and your installation notes beside the clean copy, not inside the game directory.
- Mark the folder as read-only only if you understand the consequences; normally it is better to leave the backup untouched and make a working copy when needed.
Keep the clean copy unchanged. If GTA V receives an update, make a new clean snapshot after the update has completed instead of assuming the older snapshot is interchangeable. If you need to test a different mod collection, duplicate the clean snapshot into a new working folder rather than experimenting directly on your only pristine copy.

Use OpenIV’s mods folder for supported archive edits
OpenIV documents a workflow in which edited archives are copied into a separate mods folder while the original game files remain in place. Its ASI Manager can switch between the modded files and the original game. This reduces the risk of permanently replacing an original archive and makes disabling archive-based changes much easier.
- Install and open OpenIV for the Windows version of GTA V, then follow the tool’s prompt to enable its ASI support if a mod requires it.
- Read the mod’s instructions and identify the archive or folder it expects you to edit.
- Use OpenIV’s command to copy the relevant original archive into the parallel
modspath, preserving the same folder structure. - Edit or replace the copy in
mods, leaving the original archive outside that folder untouched. - Keep a list of every added file and the mod version.
- When testing, switch to the original game through ASI Manager or remove the documented mod files before launching a clean copy.
The mods folder is not a universal uninstall method. Script loaders, plug-ins, reshade-style injectors and mods that add loose files can install outside the archive structure. Follow each mod author’s removal steps and do not delete the entire folder until you have confirmed that no other mod or configuration you need is stored there.
When several archive edits are present, remove them one at a time and test after each change. This preserves a useful diagnostic trail and avoids confusing a broken archive with an unrelated script or plug-in. Keep the original archive outside mods untouched even if a mod installer offers to overwrite it; the clean copy is your fastest route back.

Restore a working installation after a mod causes trouble
1. Stop changing files
Exit the game and launcher. Do not continue installing mods while the cause of the failure is unknown; each additional change makes it harder to identify the offending file.
2. Apply the mod’s documented uninstall procedure
Remove or disable the mod using its readme or installer. Keep the downloaded package and a copy of any configuration you may want later. If you used OpenIV’s mods folder, disable the relevant archive edits through the documented OpenIV workflow rather than deleting unrelated content.
3. Restore a matching clean backup
If the mod replaced original files, copy the affected files from your clean snapshot or replace the working directory with the clean folder. The backup must correspond to the version currently installed. GTAPoliceMods specifically warns against restoring archives from an older version after the game has updated: file mismatches can cause crashes or failed launches. If the game updated after you made the snapshot, use verification first or create a new clean installation before restoring individual files.
Use a targeted restore when you know exactly which archive was changed and a full-folder restore when many files were altered or the installation history is unclear. Do not combine a few files from an old snapshot with unrelated files from a newer build. If you cannot establish that the backup and installation are the same version, skip manual mixing and proceed to verification.
4. Verify files when no suitable backup exists
Verification compares the installed files with the launcher’s current version and downloads replacements for files it identifies as missing or damaged. It is a repair operation, not a backup of your mods, saves or settings.

| Platform | Current menu path | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Rockstar Games Launcher | Settings → select GTA V under installed games → Verify Integrity | The launcher checks the installation and supporting files against its current version. Rockstar’s support procedure says this helps ensure the game files are up to date. |
| Steam | Library → right-click GTA V → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files | The scan can take several minutes. Steam notes that a local configuration file may fail verification without requiring replacement; that result alone does not necessarily indicate a broken installation. |
| Epic Games Launcher | Library → GTA V’s three-dot menu → Manage → Verify | Epic says differing or damaged files are repaired and saved data is not affected by this verification action. |
Before verification, move or preserve mod files that you want to keep. A launcher may replace modified game-owned files with the official versions, which is desirable for a clean repair but removes those particular edits. Let the scan finish even if it appears to pause; Steam specifically notes that verification can take several minutes. Restart the launcher afterward if it requests one, then test the unmodded game before restoring third-party files.
5. Escalate to a clean reinstall only after preserving data
If verification does not produce a working launch, use the platform’s reinstall option or follow Rockstar’s documented clean-install procedure. Before removing residual folders, copy saves, profiles, settings, recorded videos and mod packages you want to retain. A clean reinstall is broader than verification and can remove leftover files that a normal uninstall leaves behind, so treat it as a last resort after your user-data backup is confirmed.
How to tell whether the restore worked
- Launch the game with all third-party files disabled.
- Enter Story Mode and load a known-good save.
- Check that the main menu, map, controls and graphics settings behave normally.
- Exit cleanly and launch a second time. A single successful start can miss a file that fails only during loading.
- Only after the clean test succeeds, reinstall one mod or one related group at a time.
- Start Story Mode after each change and keep a short log of the file or mod added.
Testing in small increments gives you a reversible point immediately before a failure. If the game breaks again, remove the last change rather than restoring the entire installation unnecessarily. Keep online play separate from this testing process and consult Rockstar’s current rules before using any modified files online.

- Copying only the executable: GTA V depends on many archives and support files. Make a full directory copy.
- Saving the backup inside GTA V: A reinstall or cleanup can delete it. Use a separate location.
- Assuming saves are in the install folder: Preserve the profile and Documents locations separately.
- Restoring an old archive after an update: Match the backup to the installed build, or verify files and make a fresh clean copy.
- Deleting the whole
modsfolder: This can remove several unrelated mods or configurations. Identify the files belonging to the problem mod first. - Expecting verification to preserve mods: Verification repairs official files; it does not archive third-party changes.
- Leaving the launcher open during a copy: Updates or file locks can make the snapshot incomplete. Close it before copying.
- Testing with cloud saves alone: Synchronization can propagate an unwanted state. Keep an offline copy of important profiles.
- Reinstalling before backing up: A clean-install process can remove settings, recordings or profiles if they were not copied first.
- Overwriting the only clean snapshot: Keep the pristine copy unchanged and make a duplicate for each experiment.
- Mixing launcher editions: Restore files to the installation managed by the same platform and version rather than copying between Steam, Epic and Rockstar folders.
Keep modded and clean states manageable
Maintain at least one untouched snapshot for the current game build and use a separate working installation or the documented mods workflow for experiments. Name snapshots with the date and version, and retire only snapshots you have replaced with a verified newer one. When a game update arrives, launch the unmodded installation first, allow the update to finish, verify if needed, and then create a new clean backup before reapplying compatible mods.
Do not use modded single-player files in GTA Online. The available support material does not establish a complete, current enforcement policy, so consult Rockstar’s current rules before making any decision about online play. Keeping an unmodded installation available is the safest way to separate Story Mode experimentation from online use.
What the launcher backup feature can—and cannot—do
Steam’s dedicated backup feature has a stated limitation: it supports games that were completely downloaded, installed and patched through Steam. That condition means you should not assume a Steam backup behaves identically for every GTA V edition or installation assembled through another launcher. A manual full-folder copy remains the broadest fallback because it captures the files actually present on your drive.
Regardless of method, treat a launcher backup as an installation recovery aid, not as a substitute for copying profiles, settings, recordings and mod archives. Keep the clean copy tied to the same game version, and verify that it can be read from the storage location before modifying your active installation.
Quick decision guide
- You have a current clean copy and know the changed files: restore those files, then test Story Mode.
- You have a current clean copy but many files changed: replace the working directory with the clean copy, then restore user data separately.
- You have only an older copy: do not mix its archives into a newer build; use launcher verification instead.
- You have no usable copy: preserve saves and mod packages, run verification, and reinstall only if verification fails.
- The game launches but a specific mod fails: remove that mod using its instructions, leave unrelated
modscontent alone, and retest.
Frequently asked questions
Should I back up the whole GTA V folder or only the archives?
Copy the entire installation directory. GTA V relies on executables, archives, update files and supporting folders, so a partial copy may not launch.

Where are my GTA V saves?
Profile data can be outside the installation folder, including locations under DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles.... Preserve the complete relevant profile and settings folders separately.
Can I restore a backup after GTA V updates?
Only when the backup matches the installed build. An older archive may mismatch the updated game. Verify the current installation or make a fresh clean snapshot instead of mixing versions.
Will launcher verification delete my saves?
Epic states that its verification action does not affect saved data. Nevertheless, keep your own copy because verification repairs installation files, not your complete user-data and mod archive collection.
Recommended Free Tools
Does deleting OpenIV’s mods folder remove every mod?
No. The folder is intended for supported archive edits. Script loaders, plug-ins, injectors and loose files may be installed elsewhere and require their own uninstall steps.
How long does Steam verification take?
Steam says the scan may take several minutes. A local configuration file may fail verification without needing replacement, so that message alone does not prove the installation is unusable.
Can I store the backup on another drive?
Yes. A separate internal drive or optional portable external SSD keeps the backup away from files you are modifying. Steam also documents moving completed backup files to another location.
What should I do before a clean reinstall?
Copy saves, profiles, settings, recordings, downloaded mod archives and installation notes. A clean-install process can remove residual folders and user files that were not preserved.

What if my backup was made before a game update?
Do not mix older archives into the newer installation. Run the launcher’s verification tool or create a fresh clean copy that matches the current build.
Will verification preserve my installed mods?
Verification repairs official game files and may replace modified files. Preserve mod packages and notes separately; verification is not a mod backup.
Where should I keep GTA V save backups?
Keep them outside the installation directory, including the relevant folders under DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles and any settings or recordings you want to retain.
Is a portable external SSD required?
No. Any separate storage location with sufficient space can work. An external SSD is an optional way to keep the clean copy away from the drive you modify.
The Bottom Line
Back up the complete, unmodded folder and user data before modding; keep the backup version-matched, use OpenIV’s mods folder where appropriate, and verify or restore files before reinstalling mods.
