A reliable self-hosted Odoo backup must preserve PostgreSQL data and its matching filestore together, with at least one copy stored away from the production server. Restore that pair first in an isolated test database or recovery instance, and verify the commands and paths for your Odoo version and installation type before touching production.
What an Odoo backup must contain
Odoo stores business records in PostgreSQL, while uploaded documents and other file-backed content are stored in the filestore. A database dump without its matching filestore may leave records present but attachments unavailable. Odoo’s deployment guidance recommends backing up the database and filestore together; its Odoo 19 on-premise backup route offers ZIP format that includes the filestore. Keep the database dump and its corresponding files as one recovery set. If you use separate tools or destinations, record which filestore belongs with which database backup; combining files from different backup points risks missing or inconsistent attachments.

Odoo 19 documents this on-premise download route in guidance for importing databases into Odoo.sh. It establishes the archive steps, but does not mean Odoo.sh is self-hosted.

- Save the archive somewhere other than the production host and confirm that the downloaded file is intact.
The manager may be unavailable if an administrator has disabled it. Odoo warns that the Database Manager is not designed for production use or large databases, and recommends disabling it on internet-facing systems. Its deployment guidance says production database-management operations should be performed by the system administrator. Use the command line where it fits your deployment
Odoo 19’s CLI reference documents ZIP and pg_dump backup formats and the database-load pattern odoo-bin db load <database> <dump_file>. A source installation uses ./odoo-bin; a distribution-package installation adds an odoo command. With Docker, adapt the command for the container. The reference also describes database duplication including the filestore, which can help create a test copy. Store backups for recovery, not just convenience
Odoo’s deployment guidance recommends daily backups of both database and filestore data, with a copy sent to a remote archive server that the Odoo server itself cannot access. That separation matters: a backup kept only on the production host can be lost along with it. An offline removable drive can be an additional copy, but it should not be the only off-host protection if it is routinely connected to the same machine.
Take a fresh full backup before upgrades or other risky maintenance. Odoo 19’s update guidance recommends storing that backup safely on a different computer. Do not assume Odoo.sh’s managed backup or retention behavior applies to a self-managed server. Odoo.sh describes platform-specific backups and warns that importing into an existing branch overwrites its data; those rules are not defaults for self-hosted Odoo. Odoo.sh: Branches
Restore safely to a test instance first
There is no single restore command that is safe to copy unchanged across every self-hosted Odoo setup. Before restoring, identify the Odoo major version, source/package/Docker installation, PostgreSQL location and credentials, target database name, and Odoo data directory. The data directory contains items such as the filestore and sessions, and the CLI’s command and paths depend on installation type.

- Choose an isolated target. Use a separate test database or recovery instance rather than overwriting production. Odoo’s CLI documentation describes duplication including the filestore as one way to create a test copy.
- Match the backup pair. Confirm that the archive includes the filestore or that you have the corresponding filestore saved separately from the same backup point as the database.
- Check the installed-version instructions. For Odoo 19, the documented load pattern is
odoo-bin db load <database> <dump_file>, but the executable and paths must be adapted for source, package, or Docker deployment. The supported dump file may be ZIP or pg_dump. Do not run the source-install example unchanged on another installation type. - Validate the recovered data. Confirm the restored database opens under a compatible Odoo version and inspect records with attachments or other file-backed content to ensure files are accessible.
- Record the procedure. Note how the backup was created, the location of its matching filestore, and the restore steps used. Repeat test restores periodically to establish that the recovery set and instructions still work.

Before restoring on production
- Confirm you have the intended database backup and its matching filestore, not files from a different backup point.
- Verify the Odoo version, database target, PostgreSQL access, executable, and data-directory paths against your actual installation.
- Test the recovery on an isolated instance first whenever possible, including access to attachments.
- Keep the off-host backup protected from access by the production server itself.
- Before upgrades or other changes, take a fresh full backup and store it on a different computer.
Odoo does not publish a universal self-hosted restore-success statistic or one retention policy for all deployments. Its Odoo.sh retention and managed-backup details describe that hosted platform, not your own server.
