Before installing a major update, make a fresh backup and confirm it finished. A Galaxy update does not automatically mean you need to reset your phone, but a separate copy of important data gives you a recovery option if you later reset the device or move to another phone. Choose Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, Google Drive, or manual file copying based on what you need to preserve and what your model supports.
Before you update: make and verify a fresh backup
- Check your current backup. Open the phone’s backup settings and look at the most recent backup time and the categories selected. Menu labels vary by Galaxy model and software version.
- Choose a destination. Smart Switch can save to a Windows PC or Mac, or to supported SD or USB storage. Samsung Cloud and Google Drive are cloud options. You can also manually copy selected files to a computer or external drive.
- Run the backup and wait for completion. Do not assume that starting a backup means it finished. Follow the route’s completion message, then check the backup listing or destination.
- Check for gaps. Backup services do not all save the same categories, and some app or account data may be excluded. Separately copy any important files that are not covered by your chosen route.
Samsung’s instructions mainly describe backups for resets, repairs, and device transfers; they do not say every major software update requires a factory reset or a particular update-specific recovery procedure. A backup is prudent preparation, not a stated requirement for every update.

Which backup method should you use?

There is no single best route for every Galaxy. For broader device data, consider a Smart Switch or cloud backup; for irreplaceable photos or documents, a second, separately checked file copy can add protection.

Back up to a Windows PC or Mac
- Install Smart Switch on the computer and, where applicable, the Galaxy phone.
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable. Unlock the phone and tap Allow if it asks to grant access.
- In Smart Switch on the computer, select Backup. Review the categories and change them if needed.
- Start the backup and wait until Smart Switch reports completion. Check the backup on the computer before starting the update.
Restore from the computer
- Connect the Galaxy to the computer and open Smart Switch.
- Select Restore, choose a backup, and review the categories you want to restore.
- Follow the prompts and wait for the transfer to finish.
Samsung’s US support guidance lists Android 4.3 or later for general Smart Switch transfers and Android 7.0 or later for encrypted data transfer. Its compatible-computer guidance specifies Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later, and says Chromebooks are not compatible. These are Samsung’s US-listed requirements; check the current support information and installed software for your device and region. Back up and restore with Smart Switch on an SD card or USB drive
Back up to external storage
- Insert a supported SD card into the Galaxy, or connect a USB flash drive or SSD to the phone’s charging port. A USB OTG adapter may be needed.
- Open Smart Switch and tap the SD card or external-storage icon.
- Choose Back up, select the content, and tap Back up again.
- Wait for Done. If there is not enough space, Samsung says you may need to return later for items that did not fit.
Restore from external storage
- Connect the storage device to the target Galaxy.
- Open Smart Switch, tap the SD card or external-storage icon, and choose Restore.
- Select the backup and content to restore, then follow the prompts.
A USB-C flash drive can be convenient if the Galaxy supports it. Connector type alone does not guarantee compatibility: support varies by model, and a USB drive or SSD may require an OTG adapter. Samsung’s external-storage instructions are available in its Australian Smart Switch guide; the page identifies its guidance as intended for Australian Galaxy variants.
Samsung Australia lists calls and contacts, messages, apps, settings, home-screen layout, images, videos, audio, and documents among supported categories. It also lists exclusions, including draft or failed messages, calendar events from synced accounts, some apps blocked by security or compatibility, and default or theme-store wallpapers. Confirm the categories shown on your own phone rather than assuming another region’s list applies.

Back up and restore with Samsung Cloud
Back up
- On supported models, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data.
- Select the items you want to save, then choose Back up now and tap Done when the backup finishes.
Samsung says automatic backup can be enabled for selected items. For it to run, the phone must be charging, its screen off, and it must be connected to Wi-Fi. The Canadian support guide lists call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendars, clock data, settings, home-screen layout, some app data and settings, and voice recordings. It says some large message files may not be backed up, files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up, and contacts or calendars held in a Google account are not synchronized by Samsung Cloud.

- Select the source phone and the items to restore, then choose Restore.

Back up and restore with Google Drive
Back up
- On the Galaxy, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Drive > Back up data.
- Review the categories and tap Back up now.
Samsung Singapore lists apps, photos and videos, SMS and MMS messages, call history, device settings, and Google Account data among the categories. Its guide says automatic backup can occur over Wi-Fi while the phone is charging and unused for at least two hours. Backups use the storage available with the Google Account; additional storage may require a paid plan.
Restore
- During initial setup on a new Galaxy or after a factory reset, proceed to Copy apps & data.
- Choose the option to continue without another device, select the backup, choose the items, and tap Restore.
Samsung warns that a backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older Android version. The menu path and wording can differ by model, region, and software version. See Samsung Singapore’s Google Drive backup and restore instructions.

Copy selected files manually
For documents, photos, videos, audio, or folders, Samsung describes using My Files to copy or move items to a computer or connected external storage. This method can avoid Smart Switch and an internet connection, but it only protects the files you copy; it does not create a complete backup of phone settings, apps, or other device data. See Samsung’s file-copy instructions.
What to do after the update
If the phone updated successfully and you have not reset it, an ordinary backup does not need to be restored. Restore only when you are recovering data after a reset or setting up another device. Use the restore route that matches the backup: Smart Switch for a computer or external-storage copy, Samsung Cloud’s Restore data menu, or Google Drive during initial setup.
