Back up your OnePlus phone before installing an update, but do not leave the only copy in the phone’s internal storage. Create an available OnePlus backup, verify what it contains, copy the resulting Backup folder to a PC or other compatible external storage, then update only after the phone is charged and connected to a stable network. Menu names differ between OxygenOS and Android versions, so use the path that matches your software and confirm the labels on your device.
What to do before you tap Install
OnePlus Support states: “Before updating your OnePlus Phone or Pad, it is recommended to back up your data.” The safest practical interpretation is a two-part process:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Create a backup using a method available on your phone.
- Keep an additional copy somewhere other than the phone itself.
A local backup stored only in the phone can be deleted when the phone is wiped, erased or reset to factory settings. That means it is not a dependable recovery copy if an update problem leads you to reset the device. A PC or compatible external-storage copy protects the local archive from that particular failure.
Before starting, identify your OnePlus model and OxygenOS or Android version. OnePlus documentation covers several generations and regions, and the same feature can appear under different labels. The current general update guidance lists Settings > System & update > Software Update or System Update. An OxygenOS 12 note points instead to Settings > About device for checking software information. Use the wording shown on your own phone rather than assuming that another model has the same menu.

Choose a backup method that matches your phone
| Method | What OnePlus documentation describes | What it does not guarantee | Survives a phone wipe? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local backup | OxygenOS 14: Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup, then New backup. The OxygenOS 14 manual recommends this route for small volumes of data. | An Android 12 guide lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data and apps excluding app data. It does not establish that every photo, download, document or app-specific file is included. | No, if the only copy remains in internal storage. |
| Copy to a PC or external storage | OnePlus advises copying the local Backup folder away from the phone. Its PC procedure uses a data cable, Transfer files, and the Backup folder under internal shared storage. |
You need a suitable data connection and enough free space. A particular flash-drive connector is not universal across OnePlus models. | Yes, provided the copied files are intact and kept safely. |
| Google-account backup and sync | The OnePlus 10 Pro OxygenOS 12 manual documents account sync and restoring after a factory reset or moving to another device. It recommends Wi-Fi for large backups. | The cited manual is specific to that device and software context. It does not prove that every category is backed up on every OnePlus model. | The account copy is separate from the phone, subject to the data categories and settings enabled. |
| Clone Phone | OnePlus Ireland’s migration guide documents backup and restore, including a cloud-backup route, and lists data categories handled by the app. | The available screens and categories can vary by app version, device and region. Migration instructions are not a promise of a complete image of every phone. | A cloud or other off-device copy can survive a phone reset; a copy kept only on the phone cannot. |
For an update, a local backup plus an off-device copy is the most direct approach when those menus are available. Google-account backup or Clone Phone can provide an additional recovery route, but treat each as a separate system with its own coverage. Do not assume that combining them produces a perfect, restorable mirror of the phone.
Step 1: Check the software version and the available menus
Find the version information
Open the phone’s settings and look for the device or software-information screen. OnePlus documentation uses Settings > About device in an OxygenOS 12 context. Newer phones may expose equivalent information under a differently named system section. Record the OxygenOS and Android versions shown there; this lets you select the matching backup instructions and makes it easier to identify a changed menu after the update.
Check the update entry without starting it
OnePlus’s general path is Settings > System & update > Software Update or System Update. Open that page only to see what is offered and to confirm the wording on your model. Do not begin installation until the backup and off-device copy are complete.
Prepare the phone
- Keep the phone plugged into power or above 60 percent battery before updating, as OnePlus’s update guidance advises.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. Wi-Fi is especially appropriate for large account backups.
- Make sure the destination PC or external storage has enough free space for the copied archive.
- Do not erase, factory-reset or otherwise wipe the phone while the only backup copy is still in its internal storage.
Step 2: Create a local backup
OxygenOS 14 path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Tap Back up & migrate.
- Open Local backup.
- Tap New backup and follow the prompts.
This is the path documented in the OxygenOS 14 manual. The same manual describes local backup as suitable for small volumes of data. If your phone does not show these labels, do not force the procedure; use the version-specific path below or search the settings for “backup” and “migrate.”
Android 12 path
- Open Settings.
- Tap System settings.
- Tap Back up & migrate.
- Tap Local backup.
- Select the available items, create the backup and wait for the process to finish.
This path comes from OnePlus’s Android 12 guide and is not a universal path for every OxygenOS release.
Review the selection instead of accepting it blindly
The Android 12 guide lists these local-backup choices:
- Contacts
- Messages
- Call logs
- System data
- Apps, excluding app data
“Apps excluding app data” is an important limitation. The application package may be represented in the archive while logins, downloaded content, game progress, settings or other data owned by that app are not. The cited guide also does not establish that photos, downloads and documents are included in the local archive. Check those locations separately and preserve any files you cannot afford to lose using a method appropriate to them. A local-backup completion message is not proof that every category on the phone has been copied.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfirm that the backup finished
Stay in the local-backup area long enough to see the new time point or completed entry. Do not disconnect power or close the process while it is running. Note the date and time of the backup so you can select the correct time point if you later restore it.

Step 3: Move the local backup off the phone
OnePlus warns that local-backup data is cleared when you wipe data, erase all data or reset the phone to factory settings. Therefore, this step is required if the local archive is meant to protect you from a failed update or a later reset.
Copy the folder to a PC
- Connect the OnePlus phone to the computer with a data-capable cable.
- Unlock the phone if prompted and choose Transfer files for the USB connection.
- On the computer, open the phone’s internal shared storage.
- Locate the folder named
Backup. - Copy that folder to a clearly named folder on the computer.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then check that the destination contains the copied files before disconnecting.
OnePlus’s documented PC procedure uses this exact storage location and transfer mode. A charging-only cable or a connection left in a different USB mode may not expose the folder.
Use removable external storage when appropriate
OnePlus also advises keeping local-backup files on external storage, and an official community answer mentions a USB flash drive. A USB-C flash drive can be convenient, but connector type and compatibility differ by phone. Verify that your model can read the drive and that it has enough capacity. You do not need to buy a drive if a PC is available and suitable.

- Do not move or rename files inside the copied
Backupfolder unless OnePlus specifically instructs you to do so. - Keep the computer or drive somewhere separate from the phone while the update runs.
- If you have critical documents or photos outside the documented local categories, preserve those files independently rather than treating the
Backupfolder as a general file archive. - Never begin a factory reset until you can see the off-device copy and have safely disconnected it.
Step 4: Add account or migration backups when they are available
Google-account backup and sync
The OnePlus 10 Pro OxygenOS 12 manual describes Google-account synchronization and restoring after a factory reset or a device change. The general sequence is to sign in with the same account during setup and enable the offered synchronization or restore options. Use Wi-Fi for large backups, as the manual recommends.
This documentation is tied to the OnePlus 10 Pro and its OxygenOS 12 manual. It does not establish that every OnePlus model exposes the same switches or backs up every data category. Read the categories shown on your phone and keep the PC copy of the local archive even if account backup is enabled.
Clone Phone
OnePlus Ireland’s migration guide documents Clone Phone backup and restore and includes a cloud-backup route. The app is designed for moving or recovering supported data, but its screens, supported categories and cloud options can change with the app version, device and region. Follow the labels displayed by your installed version, and do not interpret a successful migration as proof that app-specific data, every media file or every account credential has been preserved.
Use Google-account backup or Clone Phone as an additional route when your phone offers it. They are not substitutes for checking the local-backup selection and moving the local archive off the handset.
Step 5: Install the software update safely
- Return to the update page under the system settings path shown on your phone.
- Confirm that the local backup has completed and that the
Backupfolder exists on the PC or external storage. - Connect the phone to power, or verify that the battery is above 60 percent.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- Start the update and leave the phone undisturbed.
- Do not power off the phone or operate it while the update is processing.
OnePlus says rollout timing varies by country or region, so an update appearing on one device does not establish when it will appear on another. The official guidance also does not promise a universal installation duration. Let the phone complete its own restart and status messages rather than interrupting it because the screen appears temporarily inactive.

How to restore after the update
Restore a local backup on OxygenOS 14
- Open Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Choose the backup time point you want to use.
- Tap Start and follow the prompts.
The OxygenOS 14 manual describes this as the local-restore route. If the backup was deleted by a reset, first restore the copied Backup folder to the location expected by your phone, or use the recovery route your model presents. The cited documentation does not establish one universal re-import procedure for every device.
Restore on the Android 12 path
The Android 12 guide similarly directs users to the local-backup area, select a time point and start restoration. Its list of local categories still applies: restoration does not turn an app-only package into a guaranteed copy of that app’s private data.
Restore from a Google account
After a factory reset or device change, the OnePlus 10 Pro OxygenOS 12 manual describes signing in with the Google account and enabling the available synchronization or restore choices during setup. Use the same account associated with the backup. The categories offered on the setup screen determine what can be restored; do not assume that every local file or app-specific item will reappear.

Restore with Clone Phone
Open Clone Phone and use its restore function, selecting the local or cloud source shown by your version. The OnePlus Ireland guide documents a cloud-backup restore route, but the exact controls can differ by region and app release. Follow the on-screen category selection and allow the transfer to finish before judging what remains to be restored manually.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check after restoring
- Contacts, recent messages and call logs are present if they were selected in the local backup.
- Important photos, downloads and documents open from their expected locations.
- Apps launch and show the account or local data you expect; app installation alone is not evidence that app data returned.
- Two-factor-authentication apps, payment apps and other security-sensitive applications may require their own sign-in or recovery process.
- Calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi and notification settings work after the update.
Keep the PC or external copy until you have verified the information you actually need. Do not delete it merely because the phone completed the update successfully.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Local backup menu is missing
Check the software version and try the corresponding system-settings path. OxygenOS 14 uses Additional settings, while the Android 12 guide uses System settings. Labels can change with the model and release; the absence of one path does not prove that your phone has no backup feature.
The computer cannot see the phone
Unlock the phone, reconnect with a data-capable cable and select Transfer files. A cable or USB mode intended only for charging will not provide the documented access to internal shared storage. Once visible, look specifically for Backup.
The backup is too large or does not complete
The OxygenOS 14 manual recommends local backup for small volumes. Review the categories selected, free space on the phone and destination capacity, and use an off-device file copy for material that does not belong in the local archive. Do not infer from a failed or partial operation that the phone’s other files are protected.

The phone was reset before the folder was copied
OnePlus states that wiping or factory-resetting clears local-backup data on the phone. If no PC, external-storage or account copy exists, the documented local-restore route cannot recover that erased archive. Check any Google-account or Clone Phone backup that was previously enabled, then restore only what that service reports as available.
An app returned without its old data
The Android 12 guide explicitly excludes app data from its listed local backup. Sign in to the app, use its own cloud or export feature if available, or follow its account-recovery instructions. Do not treat the presence of the app icon as proof that its private data was backed up.
A practical pre-update checklist
- Version identified: you know which OxygenOS or Android instructions match the phone.
- Local archive created: the phone shows a completed backup time point.
- Coverage reviewed: you know that the documented Android 12 local list excludes app data and may not cover every personal file.
- Off-device copy made: the
Backupfolder is visible on a PC or compatible external storage. - Account options checked: Google-account backup or Clone Phone is enabled only if your model and region provide it.
- Power and network ready: the phone is plugged in or above 60 percent and connected to a stable network.
- Update uninterrupted: you will not power off or operate the phone while installation is in progress.
The key distinction is between making a backup and preserving a backup. A local archive helps only while it remains available; copying it away from the phone is what protects it from the reset or data-erasure condition that OnePlus specifically warns about.

Is a OnePlus local backup enough by itself before an update?
Not if it is stored only on the phone. OnePlus says local-backup data can be cleared by a wipe, data erasure or factory reset. Copy the Backup folder to a PC or compatible external storage, and check which categories were selected.
Does the local backup save app data?
The Android 12 OnePlus guide lists apps excluding app data. App logins, settings, game progress and other private data may require the app’s own backup or account-recovery method.
Can I restore after a factory reset?
You can use a local, Google-account or Clone Phone restore route only if the relevant backup still exists. A local copy kept solely on the phone is cleared by the reset, so preserve it elsewhere first.
Why are OnePlus backup menu names different from the instructions?
The documented paths are version-specific: OxygenOS 14 uses Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup, while the Android 12 guide uses Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup. Confirm your own OxygenOS and Android version.
