Before installing an Android update on a Motorola phone, run a Google backup and confirm it finishes, then check photos, downloads, attachments, and important apps separately. A backup protects against some data loss, but it does not guarantee that every app or local file can be recovered. Restoring a backup generally happens during Android setup—not automatically as part of a routine software update.
Back up your Motorola phone before updating
- Prepare the phone. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi, make sure you can sign in to the Google Account you intend to use, and set a screen lock. Google recommends a PIN, pattern, or password rather than swipe or Smart Lock to help protect backed-up data. Keep the account credentials and the phone’s screen-lock PIN available. Google’s Android backup guidance explains the requirements.
- Open the backup settings. On Motorola’s general support path, go to Settings > System > Backup. Turn on Backup by Google One and confirm the selected Google Account is the one you can access. Menu names and locations vary by phone and Android version; if the path differs, search Settings for “backup.” See Motorola’s backup instructions.
- Run and verify the backup. Tap Back up now if that option appears. Open Backup details and review the covered data types and apps. Wait for the phone to report that the backup is complete before installing the update. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours; tapping the button alone does not confirm completion. Google’s backup guidance gives this service estimate.
- Check photos and videos separately. Confirm that Google Photos backup or sync is enabled and that the items you need appear in your Google Photos library. Motorola describes photos and videos as syncing to Google Photos, not Google Drive. The Motorola instructions describe this distinction.
- Check individual files and apps. Upload important downloads or attachments to Drive if they are not otherwise protected. Google cautions that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data, so inspect any app with information you cannot replace. For WhatsApp, enable its own chat backup and follow WhatsApp’s cloud-restore flow after signing in and opening the app on the Android device you are setting up. What the backup includes—and what needs a separate check
Depending on the phone, Android version, and apps involved, Google backup can cover apps and app data, contacts, call history, device settings, and messages. Settings may include Wi-Fi passwords and permissions. SMS/MMS are listed in Google’s general Android guidance; RCS messages are covered when using Google Messages. Motorola also lists photos and videos synced to Google Photos and SMS messages when using Messages. These lists describe supported categories, not a promise that every app’s private data or every file stored locally will be recoverable. Google says backups are uploaded to Google and encrypted in transit. Some data is additionally encrypted using the device’s screen lock; Google Photos photos and videos and carrier MMS media are exceptions to that additional screen-lock encryption. Google’s current Android guidance says a Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage at no charge. This is account storage, shared across Google services, rather than a guarantee of space for any one phone backup. See Google’s Android backup guidance.

Two complementary ways to protect data

How to restore a backup if you need to recover data
Google’s documented restore route is during Android setup, such as when setting up a new or reset phone. Some data—including app data, settings data, and messages—can only be restored during setup. Google One Help says a factory reset and Android setup may be needed for some missing data. A routine Android software update should not be treated as a restore operation: Google’s guidance does not say that installing an update automatically restores a backup.
- Start Android setup on the new or reset phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Sign in with the Google Account used for the backup.
- Choose the available backup when prompted and follow the on-screen steps. Google may ask for the old phone’s screen-lock PIN to verify the transfer.
- Allow setup and app restoration to finish. Then check the apps and files that matter; restore app-specific cloud data separately where the app requires it.
Do not factory-reset a working phone casually to try to trigger a restore: resetting erases local data, and some items may be recoverable only if they were backed up. See Google’s Android backup and restore guidance and Google One Help.

Android-version compatibility and backup availability
A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older Android version. Google says transfers work best when the destination is on the same or a later Android version; using an older version can leave the transfer incomplete. Check the destination’s Android version before relying on a restore path. Google’s Android transfer guidance describes this compatibility limit.

If the backup will not complete
- Confirm the phone is on reliable Wi-Fi and signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Check that Google Account storage is available; Google’s stated no-charge allowance is up to 15 GB, and available space may be shared with other Google services.
- Review Backup details and check separately whether photos, files, chats, or app-specific data need their own backup or sync setting.
- Leave the phone connected and allow time for completion; Google says backup can take up to 24 hours.
- If the data is in an app that does not support Google backup, use that app’s own documented export or cloud-backup option before updating.
If account storage is the obstacle, review Google One storage options only after confirming that space is actually full; extra storage is not needed for the documented workflow when sufficient space is already available.
