Yes—you can back up an Ubuntu server to Google Drive with Duplicati. Install the Debian package that matches the server’s CPU architecture, choose either Duplicati Server for a persistent web-managed service or duplicati-cli with cron for a minimal headless deployment, authorize the Google Drive backend through OAuth, encrypt the backup with a passphrase, and schedule regular jobs. Do not consider the setup complete until you have restored representative files into a separate staging directory and verified their contents, ownership, permissions, timestamps, and application consistency.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What the finished setup looks like
Duplicati reads selected directories on the Ubuntu host, divides the data into backup blocks, encrypts the backup unless encryption is explicitly disabled, and writes the resulting backup data to Google Drive. A Duplicati Server instance keeps the job definition, starts scheduled runs, and provides a web interface. A CLI-only installation performs the same type of backup without a resident server; cron or another scheduler starts each run.

Google Drive is a supported Duplicati storage backend that can read and write backup data. Authorization is completed through Google’s OAuth flow. The account used for authorization, the selected Drive or shared-drive location, and the destination folder should be documented so another administrator can authenticate and restore the data later.

Duplicati Server
Use Server when the machine should host a long-running backup service. The server saves backup configurations, starts scheduled backups, and provides the user interface. It is usually the easiest choice for an administrator who wants to create jobs, inspect operation logs, and run restores from a browser.

- Best for: a persistent Ubuntu host with an administrator-accessible web interface.
- Scheduling: built in to each backup job.
- Operational visibility: job history, warnings, and errors are visible in the interface and logs.
- Local state: the server maintains its configuration and local backup database; protect and back up that information as part of your disaster-recovery plan.
- Secret handling: protect the server account, configuration database, OAuth tokens, and backup passphrases with normal filesystem and account controls.
CLI plus cron
Choose duplicati-cli when you want a small, headless process controlled by the operating system or an external scheduler. The CLI can run without a server instance and can use a local database path. Cron, a system timer, or an enterprise scheduler then starts the backup command and captures its output and exit status.
- Best for: minimal servers, automation, and environments where no web interface should run.
- Scheduling: supplied by cron or another scheduler rather than Duplicati Server.
- Operational visibility: supplied by command output, log files, and scheduler alerts that you configure.
- Local state: specify and protect the CLI database location; losing it can make routine operation and maintenance harder even though the remote backup blocks remain in Drive.
- Secret handling: keep passphrases and OAuth-related files out of shell history, world-readable scripts, and unprotected service accounts.
Agent, GUI, and Docker forms
Duplicati also publishes GUI, Agent, and Docker variants. A desktop GUI is unnecessary on most servers. An Agent or container can be appropriate when it matches your existing service-management and update practices, but the same decisions still apply: where the configuration database lives, which account owns the process, how Google authorization is retained, and how a restore will be performed if the original host is unavailable.

Install Duplicati on Ubuntu
1. Confirm the architecture
Before downloading a Debian package, check the server architecture:
dpkg --print-architecture
Use the Duplicati .deb package that matches the reported architecture. Ubuntu and Linux Mint are Debian-based targets for this packaging format. Do not install an architecture-specific package merely because it is the newest file in a download directory.
2. Install the package
Copy the matching package to the server, then install it with the system package tools. A typical local installation is:
sudo dpkg -i ./duplicati-package.deb
sudo apt-get -f install
The second command resolves any missing dependencies reported by the first. Confirm that the installed binaries and service files are available before creating a production job. If you are using a Docker, Agent, or CLI-only distribution, follow that distribution’s service-management instructions instead of mixing files from several variants.

3. Decide which account runs the job
Run backups under a dedicated service account whenever practical. Give it read access to the directories that must be protected and write access only to locations needed for its local database, logs, and temporary files. Avoid running a server backup job as root unless the source data genuinely requires root-level access; if root is required, compensate with stricter service isolation and file-permission reviews.
Connect Duplicati to Google Drive
1. Create the destination in the Duplicati interface
In Duplicati Server, create a new backup and open the destination selector. Choose the Google Drive backend, then specify the Drive folder or other destination details requested by the interface. The backend must be able to both read and write the backup data: writing is needed for normal backups, while reading is essential for listing versions and restoring during an incident.
2. Complete OAuth authorization
Start the authorization flow from the destination configuration. Duplicati will direct you through Google’s OAuth consent process; sign in with the account that should own or access the backup location and approve the requested permissions. Return to Duplicati and verify that the destination can be browsed before saving the job.
Record the authorized account, the Drive or shared-drive context, and the destination folder in your operations documentation. If a future restore operator signs in with a different account or points Duplicati at a different Drive location, the remote blocks may appear to be missing even though the backup is intact.
3. Protect the authorization material
OAuth tokens and configuration files should be readable only by the account that runs Duplicati and by approved administrators. Do not place them in a public web directory, a repository, or a script that is readable by every local user. If the host is replaced, plan to re-authorize the replacement and test that it can list the existing remote backup before decommissioning the original machine.
Select source data that can actually be restored
Back up the data required to rebuild the service, not every byte on the operating system by default. A practical source set often includes application data, service configuration, uploaded content, deployment manifests, and database dumps produced in a consistent state.

- Application data: persistent directories used by the service, not transient caches.
- Configuration: service files, environment definitions, certificates, and deployment settings, subject to your secret-handling policy.
- Databases: logical or physical dumps created according to the database vendor’s consistency requirements. A live database directory copied at an arbitrary moment may not be a usable recovery image.
- Exclusions: temporary files, rebuildable package caches, and logs whose retention value does not justify their upload volume.
Write down the source paths and exclusions. A restore is faster when an operator knows exactly which directories comprise the application and which files must be regenerated.
Encrypt the backup and manage the passphrase
Duplicati’s CLI documentation states that backups are encrypted by default unless --no-encryption is supplied. A passphrase can be supplied with --passphrase. Keep encryption enabled for server data unless you have a documented reason to do otherwise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStore the passphrase in an approved password manager or secret-management system, with access available to the people responsible for disaster recovery. Document the recovery procedure separately from the live server. If the passphrase is lost, encrypted backup data may be unrecoverable even when the Google Drive account and all remote files are available.
Do not put a production passphrase directly into a command copied into a ticket, shell history, or a world-readable cron file. Use the secret-injection method supported by your service-management environment, and test that the scheduled process can obtain the secret after a reboot.
Create a backup job
Server workflow
- Open the Duplicati web interface and choose Add backup.
- Give the job a name that identifies the host, service, and data set.
- Choose Google Drive as the destination and complete OAuth authorization.
- Select the source directories and configure exclusions for caches or other rebuildable data.
- Leave encryption enabled and set the passphrase through your approved secret process.
- Choose a schedule and retention policy based on the recovery objectives described below.
- Save the job, run a small initial backup, and inspect the operation log for warnings before expanding the source set.
CLI workflow
The exact destination URL and options depend on the Duplicati build and the Google Drive authorization already established. The general command shape is:
duplicati-cli backup "<google-drive-destination>" "/srv/application-data" --passphrase="<backup-passphrase>"
For multiple source paths, include each path according to the CLI syntax for your installed version. Keep the command in a protected service definition or script, capture standard output and standard error, and alert on a non-zero exit status. If your environment uses a local database path, specify it consistently for every invocation so each run sees the same job state.

Set schedule and retention from recovery objectives
There is no universal “correct” interval or number of retained versions. Choose values from the amount of data the server can afford to lose, the time available to restore service, the rate at which data changes, and the Google Drive quota available to the destination.
| Policy input | Question to answer | Effect on the Duplicati job |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery-point objective (RPO) | How much recent work may be lost? | Shorter acceptable loss requires more frequent runs. |
| Recovery-time objective (RTO) | How quickly must service return? | Keep the source set organized, maintain usable database dumps, and rehearse restores. |
| Retention duration | How far back must you detect corruption or accidental deletion? | Retain enough historical versions to cover the discovery window. |
| Change rate and quota | How much data changes between runs, and how much Drive capacity is available? | High change rates and long retention increase upload and storage requirements. |
| Restore-test frequency | How often will you prove that recovery works? | Schedule tests often enough to detect expired authorization, bad passphrases, or incomplete source selection before an incident. |
A CLI installation can be started by cron or another scheduler. Capture the start time, command output, exit code, and enough context to identify the host and job. A Server installation can use its built-in schedule, but it still needs external monitoring for failed runs, authentication problems, quota exhaustion, and a full local filesystem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Perform a safe first run
- Start with a small but representative source set, including at least one configuration file and one file that matters to the application.
- Run the backup and inspect the operation log. Look for unreadable files, authorization failures, quota errors, and unexpected exclusions.
- Confirm that the remote destination contains the new backup data and that Duplicati can enumerate its versions.
- Expand the source selection only after the small restore path has been proven.
A successful upload is not proof of recoverability. The backup must be readable with the retained configuration, OAuth access, and passphrase.
Test a restore before relying on the backup
Use a dry run for configuration checks
The CLI supports --dry-run, which simulates an operation without changing local or remote files. Use it to check command construction, source selection, and option handling before a scheduled job runs. A dry run does not replace a real restore because it does not prove that recovered files are usable.
Restore into a staging directory
Never test by overwriting the live application directory. Create a new directory on a filesystem with enough space, ensure the Duplicati process can write there, and restore a representative file set:
duplicati-cli restore "<google-drive-destination>" --restore-path="/srv/restore-staging" --version=1
The --restore-path option directs output somewhere other than the original location. Use --version when you need a particular historical point rather than the newest version. Select a version that predates a simulated deletion or corruption when validating historical recovery.
Best Value
Verify more than file presence
- Open representative files and compare their contents with known-good originals.
- Check ownership, permissions, symbolic links, and timestamps where those attributes matter.
- Validate database dumps with the database’s own restore or integrity-check tools.
- Start the application against the staging copy when possible, using isolated credentials and ports.
- Record the restore date, selected version, elapsed time, warnings, and any manual steps required.
Repeat the test after major Ubuntu, Duplicati, application, or authentication changes. A restore procedure that only worked on the original host is not a complete disaster-recovery plan.
Troubleshoot common failures
Google authorization fails or expires
Confirm that the job is using the intended Google account and destination context. Re-run OAuth authorization, verify that the server clock is correct, and ensure the Duplicati account can read and write the selected folder. After reauthorization, perform a listing operation or small backup before waiting for the next scheduled run.
Quota or upload errors
Check available Google Drive capacity and the amount of data selected by the job. Remove caches and other rebuildable paths, reduce unnecessary retention, or increase the destination quota according to your policy. Do not respond by deleting historical versions until you have confirmed that the remaining retention still covers the period in which corruption could be discovered.
Files are skipped
Read the operation log for permission-denied messages, broken paths, and explicit exclusion rules. Grant the service account the minimum read permissions required, correct the source path, or document why a file is intentionally excluded. A job that completes with warnings can still have an unacceptable recovery gap.
CLI jobs work manually but fail under cron
Cron runs with a different environment, working directory, PATH, and user identity. Use absolute paths, run the command as the intended service account, reference the same local database location on every invocation, and capture both output streams. Confirm that the scheduled process can read its OAuth material and obtain the encryption passphrase without an interactive prompt.
Restore cannot find the backup
Verify the destination address, Google account, Drive or shared-drive context, folder, local database path, and passphrase. Test access from the replacement host before retiring the original. If the remote data is visible but a restore still fails, inspect the Duplicati operation log and try restoring a known historical version into a fresh staging directory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The local configuration database is lost
Recreate the job with the original destination, source selection, encryption passphrase, and retention intent, then confirm that Duplicati can list existing remote versions. Keep documented job settings and recovery instructions outside the host so a disk failure does not remove the information needed to reconnect.
Operate the backup as a service, not a one-time command
- Monitor every scheduled run and alert on failures, warnings, authentication expiry, quota errors, and abnormal duration.
- Protect the Duplicati configuration database, OAuth tokens, logs, and passphrase-recovery instructions with restrictive permissions.
- Review source paths after application deployments so new persistent data is not silently omitted.
- Perform documented restore tests into a separate directory and retain the results for operational review.
- When migrating to a new Ubuntu host, install the matching Duplicati form, restore or recreate the configuration, authenticate to the same Google Drive destination, run a test backup and restore, and only then retire the old host.
Recommended decision
For most administrators who want a manageable headless service, use Duplicati Server on Ubuntu, authorize Google Drive through its destination selector, encrypt with a separately stored passphrase, and use the built-in schedule with monitoring. Use duplicati-cli plus cron when you deliberately want external scheduling and are prepared to manage logs, exit codes, local database paths, and secrets yourself. In both cases, a staging restore—not a green upload message—is the test that determines whether the backup is ready for an outage.
