Before a major ColorOS update, make at least one backup that is stored somewhere other than your OPPO phone. Start with the phone’s built-in local backup, copy its Backup folder to a computer, and separately confirm that Google device backup and Google Photos cover the data you care about. OPPO says an OTA update does not require a backup, but recommends making one before updates.
1. Check your ColorOS version
On the phone, open Settings > About Phone or Settings > About Device and note the ColorOS version. OPPO’s local-backup menu paths vary by version and device, so use the matching route below. Menu names may differ slightly on your model.

OPPO’s backup guide provides these paths:
- ColorOS 15 and above: Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Back up & migrate > Local backup > New backup.
- ColorOS 5.0 through 14: Settings > Additional settings or System settings > Back up and reset > Back up & restore or Local backup > New backup.
2. Create a local backup
- Open the version-appropriate local-backup menu and tap New backup.
- Select the categories you want to save. Depending on your phone and the available choices, the backup may include personal data, system data, apps, and app data.
- Tap Start and let the process finish. Keep the phone powered on; do not turn it off or restart it during the backup. OPPO recommends a network connection, preferably Wi-Fi.
- Check that the completed backup appears in the backup list.
This copy is useful, but it is still on the phone. OPPO warns that phone-storage backups are erased by a factory reset, wipe, or flashing process. Export it before relying on it as your only copy.
3. Copy the backup and important files to a computer
OPPO’s computer-backup instructions use a compatible USB cable and file transfer. The cable must support data transfer and fit your phone and computer; OPPO does not specify one universal cable or storage capacity.

- Connect the OPPO phone to the computer with the cable.
- On the phone, choose Transfer Files for the USB connection.
- On the computer, open the phone’s internal shared storage and copy the Backup folder to the computer.
- Copy important media folders separately. OPPO specifically calls out DCIM for photos and screenshots, and Movies and Music when needed. Pictures downloaded from apps may be in Pictures or Photo.
- Open the copied folders on the computer and confirm that the files are present before updating.
OPPO’s workflow also describes enabling USB debugging through Developer Options. Follow its instructions if that step is required for your device and computer connection. Do not assume that copying the Backup folder also captures every media folder or app-specific file.
4. Check Google device backup and photo sync separately
Google device backup
OPPO describes Google account backup for app data, Wi-Fi settings, and other preferences. Its UK support page also lists categories such as apps and app data, device settings, contacts, call history, and SMS where supported. Coverage depends on the device and system configuration. Open the backup screen for the Google account you use and verify that a recent backup completed: OPPO’s Google Drive backup guidance.

Google Photos
Device backup does not by itself confirm that your photos and videos are uploaded. In Google Photos, check that the intended Google account is selected, backup is enabled, and the device folders you want are included. OPPO explains the separate photo and folder settings in its data-management guide. Cloud sync is not proof that every local folder or app-specific file has been uploaded.

Do not assume that every app, secure folder, authenticator, or app-specific database is included in a local or Google backup. For anything essential, open that app’s own settings and use its backup, sync, or export option if available. Confirm you can access the account or recovery method needed after the update.

Clone Phone is another option if you have a second OPPO phone. OPPO describes it as a phone-to-phone data transfer, not as a standalone archive that can be browsed or restored independently after an update. See OPPO’s backup and migration guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Use this pre-update checklist
- Record the phone model and ColorOS version.
- Complete a local backup and confirm it appears as completed.
- Copy the Backup folder to a computer and check the copy.
- Copy and check important media folders separately.
- Confirm a recent Google device backup and check the folders included in Google Photos.
- Use app-specific backup or export tools for critical data that may not be included.
- Plug in the phone or ensure its battery is above 40%, and connect to a working Wi-Fi or mobile network before starting the OTA update.
OPPO’s OTA update guidance says a backup is not required for an over-the-air update, but recommends backing up before updates. It also advises connecting the phone to power or having more than 40% battery.
