Obsidian recommends a dedicated backup tool that creates a one-way copy of your data. Then check what the AI integration can read, send to a provider, and change.
Why a synced vault is not the same as a backup
An Obsidian vault is a folder on your device, and its notes are Markdown-formatted plain-text files. A normal file backup can therefore preserve the vault’s notes and folder structure, along with attachments and other files included in the copy. See Obsidian’s explanation of how it stores data.

Synchronization keeps copies in step across devices; it can also propagate an unwanted edit or deletion. Obsidian says Sync is not designed as a backup and recommends a separate, one-way copy: “To properly back up your vault, use a dedicated backup tool that creates a one-way copy of your data.” Obsidian’s backup guidance also notes, “Syncing services do not have a ‘primary’ device.” If several devices sync the same vault, run the dedicated backup on one chosen device and back up the full vault there.

Obsidian describes Sync’s encryption trade-offs and metadata that is not end-to-end encrypted on its Sync security and privacy page; encryption claims alone do not make a synced copy an independent backup.

Choose a backup method and destination
Obsidian does not officially endorse specific community backup plugins, but its backup page identifies Obsidian Git and Local Backup as popular options. Compare a method against the recovery job you need, rather than assuming every copy offers the same protection.

Before choosing, check whether the method is one-way or bidirectional, where the destination sits relative to the live vault, how it retains earlier versions, how easily individual files can be restored, which devices it supports, and how often it runs. The sources describe destination and hosting distinctions but do not establish comparative restore speeds or reliability.

Make and check a pre-AI backup
- Locate the vault folder. Use your operating system’s file manager to find the folder used by Obsidian. If your backup method requires a consistent snapshot, pause editing or close Obsidian while it runs.
- Copy the whole vault to a separate destination. Use a dedicated tool configured for a one-way copy. An external drive, separate network location, or separate cloud destination are possible choices; keep the backup outside any folder the AI tool can modify or a sync process could overwrite in a way that removes its independence.
- Check the result. Confirm that the backup completed and contains the notes, attachments, and other files you intend to protect. As a practical precaution, restore a sample file to a temporary location and open it. This is a recommended check, not a feature Obsidian says it has tested.
- Keep the backup while reviewing AI edits. After the tool makes changes, compare those changes with the saved copy and retain the pre-AI version until you accept the result.
Review what the AI integration can access
Obsidian says Restricted Mode prevents third-party code execution until community plugins are enabled. It also says it cannot reliably limit plugins to specific permissions or access levels: plugins can access computer files, connect to the internet, and install additional programs. For sensitive information, Obsidian recommends independently auditing a community plugin before using it. Read Obsidian’s plugin-security guidance and the particular integration’s current documentation.
A plugin’s name or a claim that it operates “locally” does not establish the full data path. Check the integration’s indexing defaults, context sources, provider destinations, retention terms, and ability to write or delete files. Obsidian’s Sync security page describes specific encryption trade-offs and metadata; that does not establish the safety of a separate AI plugin or application.

Can it read?
Find out which folders, notes, attachments, indexes, and other context sources are available to the integration. Determine whether it sees only material you select or can index more of the vault.
Can it send?
Identify which provider or server receives prompts, note text, embeddings, metadata, or logs, and check the applicable account and retention terms. For example, the AI-Vault community-plugin listing says that when RAG indexing is enabled and an OpenAI key is configured, text from every indexed note is sent to OpenAI’s embeddings endpoint—not only notes explicitly mentioned in a question. Its listing describes controls to disable auto-indexing, exclude paths, or leave the OpenAI key empty for keyword-only local search. These are details for that plugin, and may change; consult its current listing rather than assuming other integrations behave the same way.

Can it change?
Check whether the tool can create, overwrite, move, or delete files, and whether it asks for approval before doing so. If feasible, first connect it to a test copy or a limited subset of the vault, then use it with the original only after you understand its access and data flow.

What to do if the AI tool changes something unexpectedly
- Stop further AI edits so additional changes do not complicate recovery.
- Compare the affected files with the pre-AI backup and identify which changes you want to keep.
- Restore the needed file or files from the backup, rather than replacing the entire vault unless you intend to roll back everything since that copy.
- Check the restored notes and attachments in Obsidian, then review the integration’s write access and approval settings before using it again.
The exact recovery controls depend on your chosen backup method. A copy without useful version history may let you recover the pre-AI state, but not select among several later versions; check what your method retains before relying on it.
