Choose the method that fits your device and confirm completion before updating.
Back up an iPhone or iPad with iCloud
An iCloud backup is stored online, so you do not need to connect the device to a computer. You do need Wi-Fi and enough available iCloud storage for the backup.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now.
- Stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes. Check the last-backup date and time shown beneath the control before starting the update.
If Settings reports that there is not enough iCloud storage, the backup has not been completed successfully. Resolve the storage issue and run the backup again; do not treat the device as backed up until a completed backup is shown. Automatic iCloud backups require iCloud Backup to be enabled, the device to be connected to power and Wi-Fi, and its screen to be locked. See Apple’s iCloud backup instructions.
Back up an iPhone or iPad to a Mac
A computer backup is stored locally on the Mac rather than in iCloud. This option can suit you if you have a Mac and would rather not depend on available iCloud storage. Apple’s Finder instructions apply to macOS Catalina 10.15 or later; for macOS Mojave or earlier, Apple directs users to iTunes.

- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac with a compatible cable.
- On macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder and select the device in the sidebar. Follow Apple’s iTunes instructions instead if the Mac runs macOS Mojave or earlier.
- In Finder, choose Back Up Now. If you want Health and Activity data included, select Encrypt local backup and create a password before starting the backup.
- Wait for the backup to finish, then check the displayed last-backup date and time.
Keep the encryption password somewhere secure and memorable. Apple warns that an encrypted backup cannot be recovered without it. Back up a Mac with Time Machine
Time Machine is built into macOS and can automatically back up files to an external storage device. Unlike copying a few chosen documents, a Time Machine backup is intended as a Mac backup with its own restore workflow. Connect an external storage device, set up Time Machine in macOS, and allow the backup to complete before installing the update. iCloud Drive stores or syncs selected files; it is not the same as a complete Time Machine backup. Manual copying to an external drive likewise preserves the files you choose, not necessarily everything on the Mac. These approaches can help protect important documents, but be clear about their narrower scope when deciding whether they are sufficient for your update preparation. If the backup is not confirmed
- An iCloud storage warning appears: Address the storage issue, run Back Up Now again, and verify a new completion time.
- The last-backup time has not changed: Do not assume the attempt finished. Keep the device on Wi-Fi for iCloud or connected to the Mac for a local backup, then check the status again.
- You chose an encrypted local backup: Confirm you have retained its password before relying on it.
- You are updating from a Mac: Finder can also be used to select an iPhone or iPad, open General, and check for an update. Make and verify the device backup before beginning that update workflow. See Apple’s guide to updating an iPhone or iPad with a Mac.
