On Android, open Settings, go to Google services > Backup, choose the data to save, and turn backup on. Tap Back up now to start immediately. Photos and videos have a separate backup status in Google Photos. On iPhone, Google One syncs selected Google app data but does not create a complete device backup.
Back up an Android phone with Google One

Connect the phone to the internet and sign in to the Google Account where you want the backup stored. Check that it is the right account before proceeding.

Open Settings and tap Google services > Backup. Depending on the Android version, you may find the option under All services or Backup and restore.

Choose Device data, Photos & videos, or both, then turn backup on. Google recommends using a screen lock—a PIN, pattern, or password—to help protect backup data.

Tap Back up now if you want to start a backup immediately. Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours to complete.

Return to the Backup screen to check the status or open Backup details. Google says On appears beneath data types once they have been saved. Check photo uploads separately in Google Photos.
What an Android backup includes—and what it may not
Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS messages as typical Android backup data. Coverage can depend on which apps you use: Google warns that some apps cannot back up or restore every setting and data item. Google’s Android backup help also notes that some categories rely on Google apps: RCS messages are backed up when you use Google Messages, while call settings and blocked numbers are backed up when you use Phone by Google. Photos and videos use Google Photos rather than the device-backup flow.

Back up photos and videos separately in Google Photos

Open Google Photos and confirm it is using the Google Account where you want the images stored.

Open Google Photos settings and check that backup is enabled. If images are in folders other than the camera folder, select the device folders you want backed up.

Check the status in Google Photos. Backup complete means there are no more items waiting to upload. Items visible at photos.google.com have been backed up.

Photos and videos share Google Account storage with services such as Drive and Gmail. Google’s help documentation says a Google Account has 15 GB of storage at no charge; the cited help page does not state when that figure was published. If the account is full, uploads may stop until you free space or add storage. Google lists individual-file limits of 200 MB or 200 megapixels for photos and 10 GB for videos. Photos and videos are backed up to one Google Account at a time. See Google Photos backup settings and limits.

Restore the backup to an Android phone
Restoring usually happens while setting up a new phone or after a reset: sign in to the Google Account that holds the backup and follow the on-screen restore steps. Google also documents a copy-data route for a phone that is already set up: open Settings and use Back up or copy data > Copy data. Labels can vary by device and Android version. Google says a full restoration can take up to 24 hours. Photos and videos saved through Google Photos are available in that app separately from the device restore.
Android version matters. Google says a backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older version. Backup is also unavailable when setting up a personal device with a work profile or for work only, and on a company-owned device. What Google One does on iPhone
Google One does not make a complete iPhone backup. Its iPhone sync flow covers selected categories: photos and videos in Google Photos, contacts in Google Contacts, and calendar events in Google Calendar. Google says contact photos do not sync through the Google One contacts flow. Apple’s iCloud Backup covers other device data, including iMessages, SMS/MMS, app data, and device settings. Security, storage, and how long backups remain
Google Android Help says data is encrypted as it moves between a device, Google services, and Google data centers. Google also says some data is further encrypted using the device’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. The screen lock is therefore relevant both to protection and to access to protected backup data; see Google’s Android backup security details.
Google says Android device-backup data other than items backed up to Google Photos is erased if the device is not used for 57 days or if backup is turned off. This retention rule is stated on Google One’s Android backup help page. Consider it before disabling backup or leaving a device unused.

If the backup is not completing

Confirm the account. Check the account selected in Android Backup and the account selected in Google Photos. They may not be the same.

Check connection, charge, and available storage. Google recommends an internet connection, a charged phone, enough Google Account storage, and an up-to-date Google One app where applicable. See Google One troubleshooting guidance.

Look at Photos status and folders. In Google Photos, verify backup is on and select any device folders containing pictures you want saved. An enabled device backup does not confirm that photo uploads have finished.

Check file limits. A photo larger than 200 MB or 200 megapixels, or a video larger than 10 GB, exceeds Google’s stated individual-file limit for Photos backup.

Check the relevant Google app. Photos, contacts, and calendar events may be handled in Google Photos, Contacts, and Calendar rather than appearing together in one device-backup screen.
