Back up your Xiaomi phone before installing an update, even though Xiaomi says an over-the-air (OTA) upgrade should not affect personal data. The safest approach is to complete a local backup, copy that backup off the phone, and add Google or Xiaomi Cloud for a second copy when those services cover the data you need.
Menu names differ between MIUI, HyperOS, Redmi and POCO models. Use the paths below as version-specific examples, then confirm the backup date, selected categories and the presence of an off-device copy before you tap the update command.

What to do before you install the update
Use this order so a failed download, interrupted installation or later factory reset does not leave your only backup on the phone:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Check whether your phone uses MIUI or HyperOS and locate its backup and update screens.
- Run a local backup if the option is available.
- Copy the resulting backup folder to a computer or a compatible USB drive.
- Turn on a cloud backup route for the categories you actually need.
- Back up protected app data separately, using each app’s own export or account-recovery instructions.
- Check the backup status and the off-device copy, then start the update from the correct system-update screen.
Xiaomi’s OTA guidance says, “The OTA upgrade will not affect phone data, but for the safety of the data, please make a backup before upgrading.” That is a statement about the normal OTA process, not a guarantee that every model, app or failed installation will preserve every file. A backup gives you a recovery option without assuming the update will erase anything.

Identify your software version and the right menu labels
Find the version first
Open Settings > About phone. The screen normally identifies MIUI or Xiaomi HyperOS, along with the model and build information. The exact labels and placement can vary by device, region and software release, so do not keep following a path that does not appear on your phone.
MIUI 12-era update path
Xiaomi’s MIUI 12 OTA instructions use Settings > My Device > System Update to check for and install an update. Your phone may show a similarly named updater under About phone or another system section.
Current HyperOS example
A newer Xiaomi support path is Settings > About phone > Xiaomi HyperOS > Check for updates. Use this as the HyperOS example rather than assuming that the older My Device label is still present.
Find the backup controls
On a cited Xiaomi device guide, local backup is under Settings > About phone > Back up and restore. A different model may expose the same controls through Settings search. Search for backup, Back up and restore or Google backup if you cannot see the menu.
Create a local Xiaomi backup
Run the backup on the phone
- Open Settings > About phone > Back up and restore, or use the equivalent backup entry found through Settings search.
- Choose Mobile device or Computer, depending on the destinations your model displays.
- Review the categories and items shown by the phone. Xiaomi says local backups can include system settings, accounts, app data and other items, but the exact list is model- and app-dependent.
- Confirm the operation and keep the phone powered until it reports completion. Avoid restarting, clearing storage or uninstalling apps while the backup is being created.
- Record the completion time or take a screenshot of the status page so you can distinguish this copy from an older one.
A local backup is useful because Xiaomi says it normally contains more items than Xiaomi Cloud. It is not necessarily a complete image of the phone: independent encryption, permissions and compatibility rules can prevent some third-party app data from being included.
Where the local files are stored
Xiaomi identifies the local backup directory as MIUI/backup/AllBackup. Support pages render the folder name with minor spacing or spelling variations, so look for the MIUI folder and its backup subfolders if the exact text differs on your model.

Do not leave the only copy on the phone
A factory reset permanently deletes backups that remain only in the phone’s internal storage. After the local operation finishes, connect the phone to a computer with USB and copy the complete backup folder, including its subfolders, to a clearly named folder on the computer. Keep the phone unlocked if Android asks for permission to access files, and verify that the copy finishes before disconnecting.
Recommended Free Tools
If your device supports saving a local backup directly to external storage, Xiaomi lists a USB drive as an option. A USB-C flash drive can be convenient, but compatibility depends on the phone’s connector, file-system support and any required adapter. Xiaomi’s general guidance does not certify a particular drive. Open the backup destination shown by your model and confirm that the files are visible before you rely on it.
Verify the off-device copy
- Open the copied folder on the computer or USB drive and confirm that it contains files and subfolders, not an empty directory.
- Compare the copy’s modified time with the backup you just completed.
- Check that the storage device has enough free space and was safely ejected.
- Keep the original phone copy until you have confirmed the off-device copy, then leave at least one independent copy available during the update.
Add Xiaomi Cloud when its categories fit your needs
Xiaomi Cloud can sync supported information over the internet. Xiaomi’s documentation lists categories such as contacts, photos and videos, an app list, settings and Home screen layout. The available switches depend on the account, region, model and current service implementation.
- Open the Xiaomi account or Xiaomi Cloud settings on the phone.
- Review each category switch rather than enabling the service and assuming everything is covered.
- Check the account’s available cloud storage and the last-sync or status information.
- Leave the phone connected to a reliable network while a large photo or video library uploads.
- After synchronization, sign in to the same account on the device or web interface available to you and confirm that recent items are present.
Xiaomi’s comparison material says app data is not backed up to Xiaomi Cloud, and its app-specific support notes warn that third-party data may not back up or restore. Treat Xiaomi Cloud as a category-based sync service, not as a guaranteed copy of every app’s private files.
Use Google backup as a second cloud route
Settings path documented by Xiaomi
Xiaomi’s Google backup guide gives this route: Settings > About phone > Back up and restore > Backup. It also describes an alternative entry at Settings > Google > Backup. If your phone opens a different Google backup screen, use the labels shown there and make sure the intended Google account is selected.

Select what Google will save
- Open the Google backup screen and choose the Google account that should hold the backup.
- Select Photos & videos, Other device data, or the equivalent categories offered by your phone.
- Tap Confirm when the device presents the selection.
- Check the displayed backup time or status after the upload completes.
Xiaomi says automatic Google backup can occur over Wi-Fi after the phone has been idle and charging for two hours. A metered connection or mobile-data backup may incur charges, so use Wi-Fi unless you have deliberately accepted that cost. A switch that is enabled is not proof that a current backup exists; verify the date and account shown by the backup screen.

Understand what Google backup does not promise
Google backup is an additional cloud route, not a guarantee that every application can be restored. App developers control how private data is encrypted, exported and restored. For important information, follow the app’s own migration instructions even when Google reports a recent device backup.
Protect app data that phone-level backups may miss
Some information is more important than a general settings backup: authenticator accounts, encrypted messaging history, offline documents, password-manager vaults, game saves and files stored in an app-specific folder. Xiaomi notes that third-party app data can be excluded because of independent encryption, permissions or compatibility. Plan a separate method for each critical app.
Authenticator and security apps
Open each authenticator or security app before updating and use its documented account-transfer, export or cloud-sync feature. Save recovery codes in a secure location. Do not assume that reinstalling the app or restoring a Google account will recreate time-based codes.
Messaging applications
Use the messaging app’s own backup or chat-transfer command, and check its account, destination and last-backup time. If it offers an encrypted export or a direct phone-to-phone transfer, complete that process before starting the system update.
Documents, recordings and downloads
Copy irreplaceable files from internal storage to the computer or USB drive along with the Xiaomi backup folder. Include folders that may not be part of a cloud category, such as downloaded PDFs, voice recordings, scans and files created by third-party editors.
App-specific exports
Look inside any finance, notes, password, health or work app for Export, Sync, Transfer or Account recovery. Read the app’s current instructions for encryption and restore requirements. If the app has no export or account-sync function, document its support status before the update and keep the phone copy intact until you have confirmed the updated system works.

Choose one route or combine several
The most resilient preparation uses a local copy plus at least one independent cloud route. Compare the options by coverage, independence from the phone, restoration method and account, network or storage constraints.

| Local backup, then computer or USB drive | Xiaomi says it can include app data and normally contains more items than Xiaomi Cloud; an off-device copy survives a phone reset. | Copy the folder after completion. A reset deletes a backup left only on the phone. Encryption, permissions and compatibility can limit app coverage. |
| Xiaomi Cloud | Wireless synchronization of supported contacts, photos and videos, app list, settings and Home screen layout. | App data is not backed up to Xiaomi Cloud according to Xiaomi’s comparison. Check enabled categories, account storage and the latest sync status. |
| Google backup | An additional cloud copy for selected photos, videos and other device data. | Automatic backup may wait for Wi-Fi, charging and two hours of idle time. Confirm the account, selected categories and latest status; mobile or metered data may cost extra. |
No route should be described as a full-disk image or guaranteed recovery unless your exact model and the individual app explicitly support that claim.
Final checks before you start the system update
- Backup date: The local backup and each cloud service show a completion or synchronization time close to the update.
- Coverage: Photos, contacts, documents and other irreplaceable categories are selected or copied, and important apps have their own exports or recovery methods.
- Independent copy: The
MIUI/backup/AllBackupfolder and personal files open on a computer or compatible USB drive. - Accounts: You know the Xiaomi and Google account credentials needed to restore cloud data.
- Power and network: The phone has sufficient charge, is connected to a reliable network and will not be interrupted during download or installation.
- Space: The phone and destination storage have room for the update, temporary files and the backup.
Only after these checks should you open the version-appropriate updater: Settings > My Device > System Update on the MIUI 12 example, or Settings > About phone > Xiaomi HyperOS > Check for updates on the newer HyperOS example. Read the update screen’s own warning, accept the restart and allow the installation to finish without manually powering off the phone.

Restore from a computer or USB copy
Xiaomi’s restore guidance supports restoring local backup items from a computer or USB copy. Put the copied backup folder back in the location expected by your model, open the phone’s Back up and restore controls and choose the local restore option. Follow the on-screen selection and wait for completion before opening restored apps.
Restore from cloud services
Sign in to the same Xiaomi or Google account used for the backup and open its restore or synchronization controls. Select the categories shown as available and allow time for photos, contacts and other cloud items to reappear. A cloud account can restore only what was synchronized and retained under that account; it cannot recreate third-party data that the app did not permit the service to save.
Keep the original copies during testing
Do not delete the computer or USB copy immediately after the phone boots. Open representative photos, documents and critical apps, verify recent records and complete any app-specific sign-in or import step first.

Troubleshooting common backup problems
The backup menu is missing
Confirm the software version under About phone, search Settings for backup and check whether the manufacturer labels the feature under Xiaomi Cloud, Google or Back up and restore. A menu shown in a MIUI 12 guide may not appear under the same name on HyperOS or a Redmi or POCO variant.
The local backup finishes but the folder is empty
Wait for the completion message, unlock the phone when connecting USB and approve file access. Browse to the MIUI/backup/AllBackup location on the phone itself, then copy the folder again. Check available destination storage and safely eject the computer or USB drive only after the transfer completes.
A cloud backup shows an old date
Check the signed-in account, selected categories, network connection and available storage. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and charging, then refresh the status. For Google’s automatic route, remember that Xiaomi describes a possible two-hour idle-and-charging condition before the backup runs.

That can be expected when the app uses independent encryption or disallows system backup. Look for the app’s own export, transfer or account-recovery process. If no supported method exists, retain the pre-update phone copy and contact the app publisher before wiping or resetting the device.
The update screen uses different wording
Do not force the MIUI path onto a HyperOS phone. Use the updater reached from About phone, read the current screen’s instructions and verify that the update is intended for your exact model and region before proceeding.

- Run Google backup for the selected photo, video and device-data categories.
- Export or transfer authenticator, messaging and other protected app data separately.
- Open a few files from the off-device copy and confirm cloud timestamps.
- Install the update from the version-appropriate screen without interrupting the phone.
- Afterward, test critical files and apps before deleting the original backup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Xiaomi system update normally erase my data?
Xiaomi says an OTA upgrade should not affect phone data, but recommends making a backup for safety. The recommendation covers unexpected failures and app-specific limitations that a normal update statement cannot guarantee.
Is an enabled backup switch enough to prove my data is safe?
No. Check the displayed completion or synchronization time, verify the selected categories and open the copied local files on a computer or supported USB drive.
Can Xiaomi Cloud restore every app?
No. Xiaomi’s support material says third-party app data may not be backed up or restored, and its comparison says app data is not backed up to Xiaomi Cloud. Use each critical app’s own export or transfer method.
Where should I keep a Xiaomi local backup?
Keep the phone copy until you verify an independent copy, then store the MIUI/backup/AllBackup folder on a computer or a USB drive that your model supports.
